Short answer: Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if you want the newer performance platform, 24GB of memory, an OLED display, integrated Xbox-style controls and a much larger battery. Choose the original Lenovo Legion Go if an 8.8-inch screen, detachable controllers, a trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode matter more than compactness and battery capacity.
These handhelds are not simply two versions of the same design. The X20 is built around an integrated, console-like experience; the Legion Go is a larger, modular Windows handheld that can function more like a tiny desktop PC. Performance, controls, display, battery and portability therefore need to be judged separately.

The X20 has the stronger specification story on paper: a newer Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 50% more memory than the Legion Go and an 80Wh battery versus 49.2Wh. The Legion Go answers with a larger display and controls that can be physically separated from the main unit. Neither device wins every category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance: is the X20 faster?
The X20 is the performance-oriented choice, but the available evidence does not establish a precise percentage advantage over the original Legion Go. PC Gamer published X20 results at 35W while plugged in, yet its cited table does not contain a matched original-Legion-Go result under the same settings. It is therefore reasonable to call the X20 the newer and better-equipped platform, not to claim a universal frame-rate margin.

What the X20 hardware provides
Xbox and ASUS list an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD for the X20. Lenovo lists the original Legion Go on an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory and configurations reaching 1TB of storage.
The extra 8GB of X20 memory is relevant on a Windows handheld because the integrated graphics processor shares system memory with the operating system and applications. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate, but it gives the X20 more headroom when a game, launcher, browser window or background service competes for memory. The SSD capacities can be similar, so storage alone is not the deciding performance factor.
Published X20 game results
PC Gamer measured the X20 at 1080p and medium settings with the system plugged in at 35W. The results below are that publication’s test figures, not guaranteed results for every game, driver, power mode or firmware version.
| Game and setting | Upscaling | Average frame rate | 1% low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p medium | Off | 26 FPS | 19 FPS |
| Black Myth: Wukong, 1080p medium | On | 40 FPS | 35 FPS |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p medium | Off | 42 FPS | 28 FPS |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p medium | On | 58 FPS | 40 FPS |
| F1 24, 1080p medium | On | 85 FPS | 61 FPS |
Those numbers show why upscaling matters on a handheld screen. In PC Gamer’s test, enabling it raised the Black Myth: Wukong average from 26 to 40 FPS and the Cyberpunk 2077 average from 42 to 58 FPS. The 1% lows also improved, which is important because occasional dips are often more distracting than the average number.
How to interpret the Legion Go comparison
The Legion Go’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme remains a capable handheld-gaming platform, but the cited evidence does not provide a same-game, same-resolution, same-power comparison against the X20. Differences in wattage, driver versions, cooling, screen resolution, frame-generation or upscaling settings can materially change the result.

For a buying decision, treat the X20 as the safer choice when you want the newest silicon and more memory. Do not buy it on the assumption that every game will run at a fixed percentage faster than a Legion Go. The practical result will depend on the game’s engine, selected resolution, graphics preset, upscaling method and power profile.
Controls and ergonomics
The control systems reflect the different design goals. X20 keeps every control attached to one console-shaped body. Legion Go lets you remove the controllers and use the central screen by itself, or place the controllers in its FPS configuration.

- Integrated Xbox layout: The sticks, D-pad, bumpers, triggers and ABXY buttons stay in a familiar fixed relationship, so there is no controller-pairing or reattachment step during play.
- TMR joysticks: The X20 uses tunnel magnetoresistance sticks, listed by Xbox as part of its control hardware.
- Impulse triggers: These can deliver variable trigger feedback in compatible games, a feature associated with Xbox-style input.
- Transforming D-pad: Xbox describes a mechanism that rotates between a four-way directional input and an eight-way configuration. Four-way operation suits clean menu or cardinal-direction input; eight-way operation is intended for platformers, retro games and fighting games.
- Updated face buttons and bumpers: Tom’s Guide reports a rounder ABXY profile and a bumper position that is easier to press. The review also notes rubberized grips and refined bumpers.
- Balanced handheld shape: Xbox presents the design as having balanced weight distribution, which can reduce the feeling of a front-heavy device during longer sessions.
The X20’s advantage is consistency. You hold one unit, use a conventional Xbox button arrangement and never have to decide whether the controllers should be attached. That is particularly useful for action games, racing games and any title where you want a stable, console-like grip.
Lenovo Legion Go controls
- Detachable controllers: Each controller can be removed from the screen unit, allowing a separated grip or a controller-free tabletop setup.
- Hall-effect sticks: The sticks use Hall-effect sensing, which avoids the traditional physical contact used by many potentiometer designs.
- Trackpad and mouse wheel: These provide direct cursor and scrolling input for Windows navigation and games that are awkward to operate with a stick alone.
- FPS mode: Lenovo includes an FPS mode switch and a stand-oriented configuration intended to make mouse-like aiming practical in supported games.
- Programmable buttons: Additional controls can be assigned for games or desktop shortcuts, depending on the software configuration.
That flexibility is the Legion Go’s defining strength. A strategy game, launcher or desktop application can be easier to manage with a trackpad and mouse wheel, while the detachable controllers let you change your posture. The trade-off is a larger, less compact system with more hardware pieces to store and configure.
Which control layout is better for specific games?
| Use case | More suitable design | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Console-style action, racing and sports games | X20 | Integrated Xbox-style controls, impulse triggers and a fixed grip require less setup. |
| Platformers, retro games and fighting games | X20 | The D-pad can be switched between four-way and eight-way operation. |
| Mouse-oriented shooters | Legion Go | FPS mode, detachable controllers and a mouse wheel support a more mouse-like arrangement. |
| Windows desktop navigation | Legion Go | The trackpad and mouse wheel reduce dependence on touch-screen precision. |
| Travel and quick setup | X20 | There are no detachable controllers to remove, carry or reconnect. |
Display: OLED contrast or a larger window?
The X20 has a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED panel running at 120Hz, with HDR and variable refresh rate support. OLED pixels can turn off individually, so dark scenes can appear with deeper blacks and stronger contrast than a conventional LCD. Tom’s Guide reported more pronounced black levels and color impact than on the non-OLED Xbox Ally X during hands-on use, while noting that full laboratory testing was still required.

The original Legion Go uses a physically larger 8.8-inch high-resolution LCD with a high-refresh display. The extra diagonal area makes small Windows interface elements, strategy-game text and desktop controls easier to see without moving the device closer to your face. It also gives detachable-controller use a more tablet-like character.
Choosing between the panels
- Choose the X20 display if contrast, HDR impact, VRR and a compact 7.4-inch OLED are priorities.
- Choose the Legion Go display if screen area and readability of desktop-scale interfaces matter more than OLED blacks.
- Remember that a larger panel can demand more graphics work at its native resolution. Actual frame rates depend on the game’s selected resolution and whether upscaling is enabled.
The 120Hz specification on the X20 does not mean every demanding game will run at 120 FPS. It gives the display room to show high frame rates in lighter titles and allows VRR to smooth fluctuations within its operating range.
Battery capacity and real-world endurance
Battery capacity is one of the clearest specification wins for the X20: 80Wh versus 49.2Wh for the original Legion Go. That is about 30.8Wh more stored energy, or roughly 63% greater capacity, before accounting for each device’s screen, brightness, performance mode, cooling and game load.
A larger battery does not automatically translate into a measured runtime that is 63% longer. The X20’s OLED panel, processor behavior, refresh rate and software settings all affect consumption. Conversely, the Legion Go’s larger LCD and higher-resolution display can draw power differently depending on the selected mode.
What is and is not proven by available runtime tests
No directly comparable measured runtime for the exact X20 and original Legion Go is established here. Tom’s Guide measured 2 hours 15 minutes for the different Legion Go 2 and 3 hours 14 minutes for the different ROG Ally X in its PCMark gaming test. Those figures should not be presented as the runtime of the two models in this comparison.

- Buyer's Guide: The seat guard for car seat between seat & console measures 15.75*2.7*1.53", suitable for gaps of 1.43-1.53" in width, please double-check carefully the distance between your seat and the center console before placing an order
- Storage and Filling in One: Differ from traditional single-function gap fillers, gap filler for car incorporates storage function, offers you the convenience of storing phones and various other items, so that you can access them at any time while driving
- Avoid Items Slipping: With the bumps and vibrations of the car, phones, keys may fall into the seat crevices, which is difficult to pick up, and distracts the driver's attention. Car gap seat filler fills gaps seamlessly to create an effective barrier
- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
The defensible conclusion is narrower: the X20 starts with substantially more battery capacity and is therefore the stronger candidate for endurance, but the exact hours you obtain will depend on the game and settings. If you need predictable all-day use, plan around a USB-C charger or power bank rather than assuming either handheld will last through every demanding game session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage, memory and expansion
Memory and internal storage
The X20 is listed with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The original Legion Go is listed with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory and configurations up to 1TB. A 1TB Legion Go can therefore match the X20’s nominal internal capacity, while lower-capacity configurations will reach their limit sooner because modern games can occupy many tens of gigabytes each.
Because handheld graphics share system memory, the X20’s 24GB allocation gives it more room for large textures, background launchers and multitasking. It is still shared memory rather than dedicated graphics VRAM, and game developers can be limited by the graphics architecture or bandwidth before they use all of it.
Removable storage and external devices
Both devices support microSD expansion. The X20 specifically lists MicroSD Express, while the Legion Go documentation lists microSD expansion without establishing the same Express specification in the supplied specifications. Check the card standard and the device’s supported speeds before buying; a card’s advertised maximum does not guarantee that a handheld will operate at that rate.
The X20 lists USB4 and USB 3.2 USB-C connectivity, which is useful for docks, external displays and high-speed storage when the accessory and cable support the required mode. The Legion Go also provides USB-C connectivity, but the supplied comparison does not establish matching USB4 capability. For a docked setup, verify video output, data speed and charging requirements for the exact dock rather than assuming every USB-C hub offers the same features.

Portability and physical trade-offs
The X20’s integrated controls and smaller 7.4-inch screen make it the simpler travel object. There is one main unit, no detachable controller pair and no separate FPS accessory arrangement to pack. Xbox also emphasizes balanced weight distribution, which is relevant when the device is held for long periods.
The Legion Go’s 8.8-inch panel and detachable controls increase flexibility but also make the package less compact. Removing the controllers can help in a particular posture, yet it introduces more parts that can be misplaced and more opportunities for a configuration to feel less immediate. The larger body is a reasonable trade when screen area is more valuable than minimum size.
Which handheld should you buy?
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if these priorities describe you
- You want the newer AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform rather than the original Legion Go’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform.
- You expect to keep several applications or launchers open and value 24GB of memory over 16GB.
- You prefer integrated Xbox-style controls and do not need to separate the controllers from the screen.
- You play games where a transforming D-pad, impulse triggers and a familiar ABXY layout are useful.
- You want OLED contrast, HDR and VRR on a 7.4-inch 120Hz display.
- You place a high value on battery capacity and want the larger 80Wh reserve.
Buy the original Lenovo Legion Go if these priorities describe you
- You want the largest screen in this comparison and prefer an 8.8-inch panel for text, strategy games or desktop use.
- You will use detachable controllers, the built-in trackpad or mouse wheel for Windows navigation.
- You play mouse-oriented games and expect to use the FPS mode switch.
- You value Hall-effect sticks and programmable buttons more than an integrated Xbox-style layout.
- You are comfortable carrying a larger, more modular handheld in exchange for configuration flexibility.
When neither specification should decide the purchase alone
If your main question is simply “which one has the higher FPS,” the available figures cannot supply a fair head-to-head percentage. The X20 has the newer platform and more memory, and its published results show solid 1080p performance with upscaling, but the original Legion Go was not tested in the same PC Gamer table under identical conditions.

If battery runtime is your deciding factor, compare the exact game, screen brightness, refresh rate, power mode and upscaling settings you plan to use. Capacity strongly favors the X20, while a measured runtime winner for these exact two models has not been established.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose your control style: Select integrated Xbox controls for a console-like handheld, or select the Legion Go if detachable controllers, a trackpad and FPS mode are central to how you play.
- Choose your screen priority: Pick the X20 for OLED contrast, HDR and VRR; pick the Legion Go for the larger 8.8-inch viewing area.
- Set your performance expectation: On the X20, use 1080p medium as a starting point and enable upscaling in demanding games. PC Gamer’s figures show why that can move a title from the mid-20-FPS range toward 40 FPS or from the low-40s toward the high-50s.
- Check memory and storage: The X20’s 24GB and 1TB are fixed reference points in its listed configuration. Confirm whether the Legion Go configuration you are considering has the full 1TB, since Lenovo lists capacities up to 1TB.
- Plan expansion: Verify microSD speed compatibility and the exact USB-C video, data and charging requirements of any dock or external storage.
- Plan for charging: Treat the X20’s 80Wh capacity as an advantage, not a guaranteed runtime figure. Carry appropriate USB-C charging equipment for long sessions away from an outlet.
Bottom line
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the better all-round choice for buyers who prioritize newer hardware, 24GB of memory, OLED image quality, integrated controls and battery capacity. The original Lenovo Legion Go remains the more adaptable choice for buyers who want an 8.8-inch screen, detachable controllers, Hall-effect sticks, a trackpad, mouse wheel and FPS mode. Pick the X20 for a compact console-like experience; pick the Legion Go when modular controls and screen area are worth the extra size.
