The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) had not been on sale for a full year as of October 11, 2026: ASUS announced October 16, 2025 as its on-shelf date. So a credible “one-year review” or claim of daily use for 12 months needs documented early access; launch-era reviews cannot establish that experience. The available evidence can still answer what the handheld offers, what reviewers found at launch, and what remains unknown about long-term reliability.
Why this is not yet a verified one-year review
ASUS announced that the ROG Xbox Ally X would reach shelves on October 16, 2025. That is five days after October 11, 2026, so even the announced retail timeline had not reached its first anniversary on that date. ASUS also said availability would vary by country. ASUS’s launch announcement identifies the date and regional qualification.
A writer with a pre-release unit could have used it longer, but that requires a documented start date and a clear explanation that the period began before public retail availability. Without that evidence, “using it daily for the past 12 months” should not be presented as a personal finding. The ROG Xbox Ally X is also distinct from the earlier ROG Ally X; this article concerns the 2025 RC73XA.

What the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X includes
ASUS lists the RC73XA with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1 TB M.2 SSD, and an 80 Wh battery. ASUS’s launch announcement describes an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 APU, 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores, and an integrated NPU. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or battery-runtime measurements. Check the regional SKU before relying on a specification for a particular purchase.

The listed connections and expansion include USB4, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, and a UHS-II microSD reader. Windows Central’s launch review documented those ports and reader and reported that the internal SSD was accessible after opening the device. That report indicates potential service or upgrade access, not that every replacement drive is compatible or that installation is effortless. Match an M.2 upgrade to the exact device requirements before buying.
What launch-era reviews tell us—and what they do not
Comfort and controls
Windows Central’s launch-era reviewer praised the shaped grips and described a comfortable hold. That is a useful initial ergonomic impression, but it is not a finding about comfort after a year of daily sessions, control wear, or durability.
Performance
PC Gamer reported that the Ally X performed at the top of the handhelds in its comparison benchmarks, while noting that its advantage at the high-performance end was not dramatic. Those results belong to that review’s test configuration, software, and comparison set; they do not guarantee the same frame rates across games, settings, power limits, or later software versions. PC Gamer’s review provides the launch-era context.

Software experience
Windows Central also described shortcomings in the early software experience. That observation reflects the state of the software when the review was written; it does not establish how current updates behave. A Windows-based handheld combines PC game libraries with Xbox-oriented features, so day-to-day usability depends in part on the software and services available at the time of use.
How Xbox features fit into the handheld
Xbox describes local play, cloud play where available, and remote play from an Xbox console. Cloud access and online features can depend on location, subscription terms, and a changing game catalog. Treat the company’s launch material as a description of the announced experience, not a promise that a particular title or feature remains available everywhere.
In August 2025, Xbox said Play Anywhere supported more than 1,000 games across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, including supported handhelds. That is a dated company figure; confirm current catalog listings and device eligibility before choosing a handheld around a specific game. Xbox’s launch article also reported availability in 45 countries at launch, which is not a current availability count. See the Xbox launch announcement and Xbox’s August 2025 feature announcement for their respective statements.

What a year of ownership still needs to establish
Neither the manufacturer material nor the launch reviews cited here establishes battery aging, control wear, failure rates, or sustained daily-use reliability after 12 months. An 80 Wh battery specification describes capacity, not runtime when new or how much capacity remains after repeated charging. Likewise, benchmark results at launch cannot answer whether a particular unit remains dependable after extended use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A genuine long-term review would need to identify the unit and start date, explain how often and under what conditions it was used, and distinguish measured observations from impressions. Useful evidence would include battery-health records, recurring performance or software problems, physical wear, and any repair history. In the absence of that evidence, claims about year-long ownership or longevity remain unverified.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X worth considering?
The evidence supports a qualified answer: it is a high-spec Windows gaming handheld with Xbox-oriented play options, and launch reviewers reported comfortable grips and strong comparative benchmark results. Whether it is a good buy for an individual depends on current regional pricing, the games they play, the software experience they prefer, and which local or online features are available to them. The cited launch reviews and specifications do not establish a 12-month reliability record, so they cannot support a verdict based on a year of daily use.
