The best battery setup for the ROG Xbox Ally X is not one permanent wattage mode. Use Performance for demanding games, Silent for lighter titles, and a deliberate frame-rate cap in either mode. Keep Turbo for games that genuinely need it or for plugged-in play. On supported Xbox Store games, enable Default Game Profiles so the handheld adjusts TDP and FPS targets per game while running on battery.
Then reduce the loads that do not improve gameplay: lower indoor brightness, disable CPU Boost for easy-to-run games, turn off RGB if you want every small saving, and use Hibernate rather than standby during long pauses. The Ally X has an 80Wh battery, but actual runtime depends heavily on the game, display settings, frame rate, network activity and power mode.
What the ROG Xbox Ally X is designed to run
ASUS announced the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery and a 65W charger. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent battery-test results.

Do not transfer ASUS’s published runtime figures for the 60Wh ROG Xbox Ally (RC73YA) to the Ally X. ASUS reported 5.4 hours in Hollow Knight: Silksong and 2.3 hours in Forza Horizon 5 for that different model under specified 720p, brightness and connectivity conditions. Those numbers are not Ally X results.

Choose the lowest mode that holds your target frame rate
Armoury Crate SE’s operating modes change the power available to the processor and graphics hardware. The practical rule is simple: start low, then move up only when the game misses your target or feels inconsistent.
Silent mode
Silent is ASUS’s lowest-power mode. Use it for 2D games, older titles, visual novels, emulation workloads that are comfortably above your target, and other light games. It is the best starting point when battery life matters more than maximum headroom. If frame pacing becomes uneven, switch to Performance rather than immediately choosing Turbo.
Performance mode
Performance is the normal battery choice for demanding games. It provides more headroom than Silent while avoiding Turbo’s highest draw. For a modern 3D game, select Performance first, cap the frame rate to a stable value, and raise settings only if the frame rate remains consistent.
Turbo mode
Turbo is the highest-power mode. Reserve it for a game that cannot maintain your target in Performance, or use it while connected to the 65W charger. ASUS specifically advises that moving from Turbo to Performance or Silent can lengthen battery life when Turbo is using the Ally’s maximum draw.

Set up the Ally X in the right order
- Install updates first. Open Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Update Center and install every listed update. Also update Windows and the Xbox app. ASUS says ASUS, Microsoft and AMD regularly revise software and drivers for efficiency, compatibility and performance.
- Pick the operating mode. Open the Armoury Crate Command Center, choose Silent or Performance, and launch the game. Begin with Performance for a demanding title and Silent for an easy one.
- Set a frame-rate target. Use the game’s own limiter when available, or the Ally’s frame-rate control. Choose 30, 40 or 60 FPS, or the target supplied by a game profile. A lower limit is useful only when it remains stable and responsive for you.
- Enable a Default Game Profile when offered. In the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget, turn on the feature. Profiles apply only while the Ally X is on battery and set game-specific TDP and FPS limits.
- Test one representative scene. Play the area that normally causes slowdowns for several minutes. If the frame rate stays at the target, keep the lower mode. If it drops repeatedly, move from Silent to Performance, remove an overly aggressive cap, or use Turbo only as a last step.
- Reduce display and idle loads. Lower brightness indoors, disable RGB if you do not need it, and configure the screen to turn off after a few minutes.
Use Default Game Profiles instead of guessing at TDP
Xbox’s Default Game Profiles are designed for battery play. The first published wave covered nearly 70 games. A profile sets a game’s TDP and FPS limits rather than applying one setting to every title.

When a game renders above its profile target, the profile can cap the frame rate and avoid spending power on unnecessary frames. When it misses the target, the profile can raise power to improve smoothness. This is why a profile can preserve the feel of a game better than simply forcing the entire system into its lowest mode.
Profiles are not universal: they apply to supported Xbox Store games and only on battery. If a title has no profile, use Performance or Silent manually and cap the FPS yourself. Xbox cited Hollow Knight: Silksong as an example in which a profile delivered nearly one additional hour compared with Performance mode while retaining 120 FPS. That is an Xbox example for the feature, not a universal Ally X runtime guarantee.
Cap FPS deliberately
Rendering frames that the display or your chosen target does not need wastes energy. A 120Hz panel can show up to 120 frames per second, but many games feel consistent at 60, 40 or 30 FPS. The correct cap is the lowest value that meets your tolerance for motion smoothness and input latency.
- 30 FPS: appropriate for slower strategy, narrative and some demanding AAA games when battery life is the priority.
- 40 FPS: a useful middle ground when 30 feels too sluggish but 60 is too expensive; it also divides evenly into a 120Hz refresh cycle.
- 60 FPS: a common target for action games when Performance mode can hold it consistently.
- 120 FPS: reserve it for games that can sustain it without forcing Turbo-level power use, or for a supported profile that explicitly targets it.
A fluctuating 60 FPS can feel worse than a stable 40 FPS. Check frame pacing in the game or Armoury Crate overlay rather than judging from a peak number in an easy scene.
Turn off CPU Boost for games that do not need it
Armoury Crate includes the setting at Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > Eco Assist > CPU Boost. Disable CPU Boost for indie, 2D and otherwise CPU-light games when the frame rate remains stable. ASUS says this improves efficiency, but demanding games may lose performance, so do not apply it blindly to every title.

After changing the setting, replay a busy section rather than an idle menu. If frame pacing or loading performance worsens, restore CPU Boost for that game and rely on an FPS cap instead.

Lower the display and lighting load
ASUS identifies the display backlight as a significant power user. Use the Command Center brightness slider to lower brightness indoors; the right level is the lowest one that remains comfortable in your room. Disable the Ally’s RGB lighting if you do not need it. ASUS characterizes the RGB saving as small, so treat it as a finishing adjustment after mode, FPS and brightness.
The 120Hz panel does not require every game to render at 120 FPS. Keep the panel’s high refresh capability for titles that benefit from it, but let the game or profile run at a lower stable target when you are on battery.
Stop the Ally X draining while it is sleeping
Standby is convenient, but a long pause can consume more energy than expected. For a break lasting more than a few minutes, use Hibernate or shut down instead.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Power & Battery.
- Set the power button action to Hibernate if you want a one-press way to enter a near-off state.
- Set the display to turn off after a short idle period.
- Open Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > Operating Mode > Eco Assist.
- Enable Modern Standby Assistant and Extreme Standby Mode.
Use Hibernate for a long lunch break, travel or overnight storage. Use ordinary sleep only when you expect to resume soon and accept some standby consumption.

Protect battery capacity when you usually play plugged in
Battery Care Mode limits charging to 80%. ASUS says this reduces long-term wear, but the immediate trade-off is less available runtime when you unplug. Keep it enabled if the Ally X spends most of its time at a desk.
Before a planned long mobile session, use Instant Full-Charge Mode to allow a temporary 100% charge for 24 hours. After that window, the normal charge limit can resume. This is a planning tool, not a setting that increases the battery’s physical capacity.

Cloud gaming, Xbox Remote Play and PC streaming can use much less Ally X battery because the game is rendered elsewhere. The handheld mainly decodes the video stream and sends input. The trade-off is dependence on network quality, latency and service access. A poor wireless connection can make streamed play less responsive than a locally installed game, even though it may consume less power.
Streaming is most compelling for a long session in a demanding game when local Performance or Turbo mode would drain the battery quickly. It is less attractive when you are offline or when the network cannot hold a stable connection.

The game feels slow in Silent mode
Switch to Performance first, then cap the FPS to a stable value. Do not jump straight to Turbo unless Performance still misses the target in the demanding scene.

The frame rate is high but battery life is poor
Lower the cap to 60, 40 or 30 FPS, reduce brightness, and check whether CPU Boost is enabled for a light game. A peak frame rate is not useful if it exceeds what you can perceive or maintain.
A profile appears to make the game stutter
Verify that the game is supported and that the Ally is actually on battery, because profiles apply only there. If the profile target is not stable in your scene, disable it for that title and use Performance with a manually chosen cap.
The battery drops during a long sleep period
Use Hibernate or shut down, shorten the display timeout, and enable Modern Standby Assistant plus Extreme Standby Mode. These changes address idle drain rather than the game’s running power draw.

Use the included 65W charger or an external USB-PD battery rated for at least 65W, as ASUS recommends. A lower-output source may not provide enough power to run the system and replenish the battery at the same time.
What battery figures you can and cannot compare
The Ally X’s 80Wh specification tells you the size of its energy reserve, not a guaranteed runtime. Game engines, frame-rate targets, brightness, wireless activity, operating mode and background updates all change consumption. The nearly one-hour Hollow Knight: Silksong difference reported by Xbox compares a supported profile with Performance mode while retaining 120 FPS; it should not be generalized to every game.
Likewise, the 5.4-hour Silksong and 2.3-hour Forza Horizon 5 figures published by ASUS belong to the 60Wh ROG Xbox Ally (RC73YA), tested at specified 720p, brightness and connectivity settings. They are useful as evidence that conditions matter, but they are not measurements of the 2025 Ally X.
A practical battery-first profile
For most owners, the strongest starting configuration is Performance mode, a 40 or 60 FPS cap selected per game, reduced indoor brightness, and Default Game Profiles enabled for supported Xbox Store titles. Use Silent plus CPU Boost off for light games. Switch to Turbo only when the target cannot be maintained, and prefer Hibernate over sleep for long pauses. Keep Battery Care Mode on when docked and use Instant Full-Charge Mode only before a long session away from power.
