Most ROG Ally X problems during setup are caused by the current control mode, a missing Armoury Crate SE library entry, or an update path that does not match the RC72LA model—not by a failed joystick. Start with the reversible checks below, then move to firmware or hardware inspection only when the symptoms justify it.
This guide applies to the 2024 ASUS ROG Ally X, model RC72LA. Menu names and firmware listings can change, so confirm the current labels and release offered for your region before applying an update.
Identify which layer is failing
Use the symptom, not the affected button, to choose a fix. The Ally X uses different input mappings for Windows setup, the Windows desktop, Steam’s desktop interface, and Steam Big Picture Mode. A control that appears dead in one mode can work normally in another.

| The cursor moves but clicks do nothing on the desktop | Windows Desktop Mode mapping | Use the right bumper for left click and the right trigger for right click. |
| Buttons work in games but not in Steam’s desktop interface | Steam is not using Desktop Mode | Open Command Center and set Control Mode to Desktop Mode. |
| An installed game is absent from Armoury Crate SE | Game-library scan or tile management | Open Manage Library and add the game manually. |
| Capture does nothing | Xbox Game Bar integration | Open Game Bar manually from Windows Search, then restart if necessary. |
| A battery warning appears and the charge light flashes continuously | Possible battery-connector problem | Check the connection only if you are qualified to do so; otherwise use specialist service. |
If a control fails in every mode, after a restart and after firmware is current, treat it as a possible hardware fault rather than repeatedly changing game profiles.

Complete the first Windows setup
Use the touchscreen or joystick
During the first-run Windows setup, the touchscreen can select fields and buttons. The joysticks can also navigate the setup pages. ASUS documents the right bumper as the equivalent of a left click or Enter, which lets you confirm a highlighted option without connecting a mouse or keyboard.
- Touch the field or move the joystick until the required option is highlighted.
- Press the right bumper to select, confirm, or continue.
- Use the touchscreen keyboard when Windows asks for a network name, Microsoft account, PIN, or password.
- Keep the Ally X connected to power while Windows downloads updates and completes device configuration.
If the joystick appears unresponsive on one page, try the touchscreen before concluding that the stick is defective. The setup environment does not necessarily use the same mappings as a game or the Windows desktop.
Make the on-screen keyboard appear
When tapping a text box does not open the keyboard, ASUS lists three alternatives:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Hold M1 or M2 and press D-pad up.
- Open the keyboard from Command Center.
- Tap the keyboard icon on the Windows taskbar.
After the keyboard opens, tap the text field again if the cursor is not active, enter the required text, and press the right bumper to confirm. A physical USB or Bluetooth keyboard is optional; it is not required to finish setup.
Navigate Windows after setup
Use the documented Desktop Mode mapping
Windows Desktop Mode is designed for pointer-based interfaces. The documented mapping is:
- Right joystick: move the pointer.
- Right bumper: left click.
- Right trigger: right click.
Use the touchscreen for small controls, the right joystick for cursor movement, and the bumper or trigger for clicks. If a program requires text entry, call up the on-screen keyboard using one of the methods above or connect a physical keyboard temporarily.
Check Command Center before changing hardware settings
Open Command Center from its hardware button and inspect the current Control Mode. A game-oriented profile can leave Windows behaving as though no mouse is attached, while Desktop Mode supplies the pointer and click mappings. Switch modes, close the overlay, and test a simple Windows window such as Settings before testing a game.
Fix Steam desktop controls
Switch Steam to Desktop Mode
For Steam’s desktop interface, open Command Center and change Control Mode to Desktop Mode. Then use the right joystick to move the cursor, the right bumper to click, and the right trigger to right-click.
ASUS’s FAQ states, “The joysticks and buttons only work in Steam’s Big Picture Mode.” That statement describes Steam’s game-oriented interface; ASUS separately instructs users to select Desktop Mode when they need to operate Steam’s desktop interface. Therefore, do not infer a failed controller from desktop-only behavior.
- Launch Steam.
- Open Command Center.
- Select Control Mode.
- Choose Desktop Mode.
- Move the pointer over a Steam menu and test a left click with the right bumper.
- Switch back to the game-oriented mode when you are finished with desktop navigation.
When Big Picture Mode is the better route
Steam Big Picture Mode is built for controller navigation. If your goal is to launch or play a controller-supported game rather than manage files or account settings, use Big Picture Mode. The Ally’s joysticks and buttons are expected to work there without the desktop pointer mapping.

Repair an incomplete Armoury Crate SE library
Understand what Armoury Crate SE controls
Armoury Crate SE is ASUS’s “designed to be single platform for controlling and optimizing the ROG Ally.” It brings together the game library, device controls, control modes, lighting, and real-time system information. The current official documentation says it supports the ROG Ally series and requires version 2.1.10.0 or later; check ASUS’s live documentation for the version currently offered before reinstalling or updating.

Add a game that is missing
Installed games normally appear automatically. If a game is present in Windows or another launcher but absent from Armoury Crate SE:
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open the game-library management screen.
- Select Manage Library.
- Choose the option to add or scan for the installed game.
- Browse to the game’s executable when Armoury Crate asks for its location.
- Save the entry and launch it from the new tile.
Removing a tile from Armoury Crate SE does not uninstall the underlying game. You can remove and recreate a tile without deleting the installation, saved data, or the game launcher.
If the library still does not refresh
- Confirm that the game is actually installed and that its launcher can start it outside Armoury Crate SE.
- Restart Armoury Crate SE and, if necessary, restart Windows.
- Check that the app meets the documented minimum version of 2.1.10.0 or later.
- Use Manage Library to add the executable manually instead of waiting for an automatic scan.
A missing tile and a failed game launch are separate problems. If the manually added tile opens the launcher but the game itself crashes, troubleshoot that game, its launcher, or its graphics settings rather than repeatedly rescanning Armoury Crate SE.
Fix screen capture and recording
Armoury Crate SE’s capture and recording functions rely on Xbox Game Bar. If a capture shortcut appears to do nothing:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Search.
- Search for and launch Xbox Game Bar manually.
- Test a capture or recording from the Game Bar overlay.
- Restart the Ally X if the overlay does not appear or the command remains unresponsive.
If capture still fails after the restart, follow Microsoft’s current Xbox Game Bar troubleshooting steps. The issue may be with Game Bar or Windows rather than Armoury Crate SE itself.
Restore Radeon graphics options
Some Radeon options are managed through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition rather than entirely through Armoury Crate SE. If Radeon Super Resolution or AMD Fluid Motion Frames cannot be managed from Armoury Crate SE, ASUS advises running AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once. Open it from Windows, allow it to initialize, and then return to Armoury Crate SE to check the options again.
Do not copy an old driver-version requirement into a current setup guide. Driver packages and thresholds change; use the versions and instructions shown by ASUS and AMD for the installed software at the time you troubleshoot.
Enter the BIOS
Use the hardware-button method
To enter the Ally X BIOS, power on the device and press or hold the volume-down button until the BIOS screen appears. This route is useful when Windows will not boot far enough to open its recovery menus.
Use Windows Advanced Startup
If Windows is working, the software route avoids timing a button press:

Confirm the exact model
The 2024 ROG Ally X is model RC72LA. Open the model-specific ASUS support page and select BIOS & Firmware. Do not use a file for a different ROG Ally model simply because its name looks similar.
Check the current release
The support listing retrieved for RC72LA showed BIOS version 312, dated June 11, 2025. That is a dated listing, not a promise that it remains the newest release. Before updating, compare the version installed on your Ally X with the release currently offered on the RC72LA page and read the notes for the matching update method.
Prepare for the update
- Charge the Ally X and connect the AC adapter.
- Close games and other programs.
- Use only the BIOS or firmware package intended for RC72LA.
- Read the ASUS instructions for whether the update uses Windows, Armoury Crate, or a firmware utility.
- Do not power off, force-restart, or disconnect the device while the update is running.
ASUS warns that interrupting the process can leave the device unable to start. If the update fails or the Ally X will not boot afterward, stop repeating the update and use ASUS technical support or qualified service rather than trying random firmware files.
Handle a battery-connector warning
Recognize the warning pattern
Armoury Crate SE describes a battery-connector warning that can occur with a continuously flashing charge indicator. Together, those signs can indicate that the battery connection needs attention.
Choose the safe response
- Save your work and shut down normally if the Ally X is still usable.
- Disconnect the charger and note whether the warning returns when the device is powered on.
- If you are trained and the device is outside any service restriction, follow the official service procedure to check or reconnect the battery connection.
- If the warning or flashing indicator persists, consult a qualified specialist or ASUS support.
Do not repeatedly bend, probe, or disconnect the battery connector as a casual troubleshooting experiment. A battery is a serviceable hardware component, and an incorrect connection can create a safety risk or additional damage.
When software troubleshooting is enough—and when it is not
| Situation | Prefer self-service | Escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Input fails only in Steam’s desktop interface | Switch Command Center to Desktop Mode. | Only after the controls fail in Windows Desktop Mode and Big Picture Mode as well. |
| A game tile is missing | Use Manage Library and add the executable. | If Armoury Crate SE cannot open or repeatedly corrupts its library. |
| Capture shortcut does nothing | Open Xbox Game Bar manually and restart. | If Game Bar and Windows troubleshooting do not restore capture. |
| BIOS is needed | Use volume-down during power-on or Windows Advanced Startup. | If the device cannot boot or firmware recovery is required. |
| Battery warning plus continuous charge-light flashing | Check the connection only with appropriate technical competence. | Persistent warning, swelling, heat, smell, damaged cable, or uncertain connector condition. |
ASUS support provides technical-support and repair-status routes, but availability and terms vary by region. Use the support option for your country and provide the RC72LA model, the exact warning text, when it started, and which troubleshooting steps you already completed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA fast decision sequence
- Identify the interface: first-run setup, Windows desktop, Steam desktop, Big Picture, Armoury Crate SE, capture, BIOS, or battery indication.
- Try the matching reversible control: touchscreen and right bumper during setup; Desktop Mode for Windows and Steam desktop; Big Picture for controller navigation.
- Restart the affected app or Windows: this is especially relevant to Armoury Crate SE, Xbox Game Bar, and graphics software initialization.
- Repair the library or software integration: use Manage Library, launch Game Bar manually, or run AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once.
- Verify the model and firmware: use the RC72LA support page and check the current release before updating.
- Escalate physical indicators: a persistent battery warning, continuous charge-light flashing, failed controls in every mode, or a device that will not boot belongs with ASUS or qualified service.
This sequence preserves your data and settings as long as possible while separating a mode mismatch from a genuine hardware or firmware fault.
