Choose Steam if keeping the purchase in your Steam library and using Steam’s library tools is your priority. Choose the Rockstar Games Launcher (Rockstar Store) if its matching edition or checkout price is better and you are comfortable with a separate Rockstar entitlement. For supported PC games, buying on Steam still requires a Rockstar account and Rockstar Games Launcher, so Steam does not remove that extra account layer.
The short answer: Steam convenience versus Rockstar ownership
Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher sell separate PC entitlements. A game purchased in one storefront does not automatically become owned in the other. The practical choice is therefore not simply “which launcher is better?” It is which account should hold the purchase, which library features matter to you, and which store offers the exact edition at the better checkout price.

If your main concern is whether a Steam purchase avoids Rockstar’s software, the answer is no for games whose PC requirements include it. If your concern is whether friends on another PC storefront can play with you, Rockstar’s statement covers PC-version owners, not every mode or every platform combination.

How ownership and entitlements actually work
A Steam copy is not a Rockstar Store copy
Buying a Rockstar game through Steam creates a Steam entitlement. Buying it through the Rockstar Store creates a Rockstar entitlement. Rockstar Customer Support describes the Launcher version as “not the same as a key which is entitled within Steam.” Rockstar also says it cannot transfer or exchange a Launcher entitlement into Steam.

That means a game you already bought in the Rockstar Launcher will not appear as an owned Steam game merely because you install Steam, and a Steam purchase will not automatically populate the Rockstar Store as a separate purchase. You may still be asked to sign in to Rockstar when launching either version, but the sign-in does not merge the storefront licenses.
Adding a Rockstar copy to Steam
Steam lets you add a manually selected non-Steam game or shortcut. This can put a Rockstar-installed game in the Steam interface and may let you use Steam Input, the overlay or controller configurations where compatible. It does not convert the license into a Steam entitlement. Steam will not treat that shortcut as a native Steam purchase and will not track its play hours or achievements as it would for a supported Steam version.
Use a shortcut only as an interface convenience. Do not buy the Rockstar version expecting a later shortcut to unlock Steam achievements, hours or ownership tools.
Launcher and account requirements
What happens after buying on Steam
For supported Rockstar PC titles, Steam is only one part of the launch chain. You install or start the game through Steam, then use Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to a Rockstar Games account. Rockstar’s PC requirements for Red Dead Redemption 2, for example, specify internet access, Rockstar Games Launcher and a Social Club login for installation, activation and online play.
The exact screens can vary by title and by whether Rockstar Games Launcher is already installed, but the dependency remains: a Steam purchase does not eliminate Rockstar authentication.

Link the intended accounts before launching
Rockstar’s account-linking guidance states that only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account at a time. When the linking prompt appears, check the email address and username carefully before confirming. This is especially important on a shared computer where another person may have left a Rockstar session signed in.
- Sign in to the Steam account that will own and play the game.
- Install or open Rockstar Games Launcher when the game requests it.
- At the Rockstar sign-in or linking prompt, verify that the displayed Rockstar account is the one you intend to keep using.
- Complete the link and start the game once to confirm that the expected Rockstar profile receives the entitlement.
Do not treat the first successful launch as a harmless test with a random account. The linked account determines where Rockstar recognizes the connected PC entitlement and progress.
Unlinking is not an instant reset
Rockstar’s PC unlinking policy, updated February 4, 2026, applies eligibility rules and may impose a cooldown. Rockstar Support says it cannot bypass that cooldown. In the case of an initial mistaken link, a one-time exception may be considered case by case when the Rockstar account has no gameplay time or progress. That is not a general promise of transfer, and an account with playtime may not qualify.
If the wrong Rockstar account was linked, stop launching the game, review Rockstar’s current unlinking instructions and contact Support with the account details. Repeatedly launching the game while waiting can create the gameplay history that makes an exception less likely.
Steam’s advantages—and what they do not change
Why Steam is the better fit for some buyers
- One familiar library: The game appears beside your other Steam purchases, with Steam’s install, update and library-management interface.
- Steam-specific features: Supported native Steam versions can expose Steam achievements, playtime and other platform features. These features are not guaranteed for every Rockstar title or mode.
- Existing Steam habits: If your controller profiles, family-computer setup or storage workflow is built around Steam, keeping the entitlement there may reduce day-to-day friction.
- Clear ownership location: You know to look in Steam when reinstalling or moving to another PC, while still expecting Rockstar authentication at launch.
Steam does not remove Rockstar’s dependencies
A Steam listing should not be read as a promise that the game runs without Rockstar Games Launcher or a Rockstar account. The requirements for Red Dead Redemption 2 explicitly include those services. Other titles can have different requirements, so check the individual product page rather than generalizing from one game.

Steam also does not provide a way to exchange a Rockstar Store entitlement for a Steam key. If you already own the Rockstar version, buying it again on Steam is a second purchase, not a migration.

Separate ownership can be worthwhile
The Rockstar Store is the direct choice when you prefer the Rockstar account to hold the entitlement, want a particular Rockstar edition, or find a lower live checkout total there. It also avoids maintaining two storefront records for the same copy. The trade-off is that the game will not be a native Steam purchase, even if you add a shortcut to your Steam library.
Compare like-for-like editions
Prices can differ because stores show different editions, regional currencies, taxes, bundles or promotions. Compare the same product edition and platform before deciding. A standard edition on one storefront is not an apples-to-apples match for a premium edition, bundle or upgrade on the other.

Those figures are not a standing “best price.” Open both stores, select the identical edition, set your region, and compare the final checkout amount, including any taxes or required add-ons shown there.
Refunds: follow the store that took your payment
Rockstar Store purchases
Rockstar’s Refunds and Returns FAQ, accessed in 2026, says eligible digital PC game purchases from Rockstar Stores may be requested within 14 days, subject to its conditions. One stated condition is a total runtime limit of two hours. The policy also contains restrictions involving associated non-refundable items, so a purchase that includes such items may not qualify even when it is within the time window.

“Within 14 days” is therefore not an unconditional guarantee. Read the policy and the checkout terms for the specific product, and keep the merchant of record in mind if another company processes the payment.
Purchases made on Steam or elsewhere
For a Steam purchase, use Steam’s refund policy and support process. For a key bought from another authorized retailer, use that retailer’s terms. Rockstar directs buyers who purchased outside Rockstar Stores to the applicable external retailer’s policy; do not apply Rockstar’s 14-day and two-hour conditions to a Steam transaction automatically.
Practical refund checklist
- Identify the store shown on your receipt and payment statement.
- Check the edition, bundle contents and any non-refundable items.
- Record total playtime before submitting a request.
- Submit through the seller’s support channel, not whichever launcher happens to open the game.
Performance and installation example: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 illustrates why storefront choice and system requirements are separate decisions. Its Rockstar product page lists a minimum 64-bit Windows 10 system, 8 GB of RAM and 150 GB of disk space. The page also lists internet access and Rockstar Launcher/Social Club access as requirements for the PC product.

These specifications are for that product page and can change with updates. They should not be treated as universal requirements for every Rockstar game.

Multiplayer and playing with friends
Rockstar says PC owners can play with other owners of the PC version regardless of whether the key was purchased through Steam, Rockstar Store or a third-party retailer. This is useful when a group owns the same PC release through different storefronts: storefront origin alone is not stated as a barrier.
The statement is limited to PC-version owners. It does not establish cross-play with console editions, and it does not guarantee that every game mode, server feature or future title will work identically. Confirm the specific game’s current requirements if cross-platform play is important to your group.
Decision guide: choose the store that matches your priority
Choose Steam when…
- You want a native Steam library entry rather than a manually added shortcut.
- Steam achievements and playtime tracking matter for the supported version you are buying.
- Your household already manages installs, controllers and game discovery through Steam.
- You accept that Rockstar Launcher and account linking remain part of the launch process.
Choose Rockstar Store when…
- The same edition is cheaper at the Rockstar checkout after regional pricing, taxes and promotions.
- You prefer the Rockstar account to be the primary ownership record.
- You do not need Steam’s native hours and achievements for this purchase.
- You have checked Rockstar’s refund conditions and are comfortable with its separate entitlement.
Wait and verify when…
- You are comparing unlike editions or bundles.
- You are unsure which Rockstar account is linked to Steam.
- You are relying on a sale price seen outside your region or on an old page.
- You expect a Rockstar purchase to be transferable to Steam later.
Common questions and failure cases
Should I buy RDR2 on Steam or the Rockstar Launcher?
Buy the Steam edition if a native Steam library entry and its supported platform features are worth keeping, while accepting Rockstar Launcher and account requirements. Buy the Rockstar edition if its matching checkout price or edition is preferable and a separate Rockstar entitlement is acceptable. Neither choice removes the PC game’s Rockstar account layer.
Can I transfer my Rockstar Games Launcher version to my Steam library?
No. Rockstar says the Launcher version is not a Steam-entitled key and cannot be transferred or exchanged into Steam. You can add a non-Steam shortcut for convenience, but it will not become a Steam purchase or gain Steam’s native hours and achievements tracking.
Can I link several Rockstar accounts to one Steam account?
No. Rockstar’s linking guidance says only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account at a time. Changing that relationship may involve eligibility checks and a cooldown that Support cannot bypass.
Will buying on Steam let me play with friends who bought from Rockstar?

Bottom line for a careful purchase
Decide where you want the entitlement to live before you click Buy. Steam is the better fit for a unified Steam library and supported Steam tracking features; Rockstar Store is the better fit when its edition or live regional checkout is preferable and a separate Rockstar account entitlement is acceptable. In both cases, verify the edition, price, refund policy and Rockstar account link, because the storefront choice does not eliminate Rockstar’s launcher and authentication requirements for supported PC games.
