When Rockstar Games Launcher stops working, start by noting the exact error and checking both Rockstar’s service status and your internet connection. Then follow the steps that match the symptom: sign-in errors, connection failures, permissions problems, and damaged game files have different fixes.
First, identify where the failure happens
Write down or capture the full error message and any code. Note whether the launcher opens, whether you can sign in, when the problem began, and whether it affects one game or all launcher activity. These details help distinguish a service or network issue from a launcher or game-file problem.
Check Rockstar services and your connection
Check Rockstar Support for current service availability, and confirm that the PC can access the internet. Rockstar’s connection guidance says that a service marked Up does not rule out a conflict with your connection type or another local network setting. Service status changes, so check it when the problem occurs.

Rockstar Games Customer Support’s connection guidance, last updated in 2026, gives connection targets of 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are Rockstar’s troubleshooting figures, not a guarantee that meeting them will resolve every connection failure. The same guidance recommends trying a wired connection if Wi-Fi continues to cause trouble.

If you are on Wi-Fi, test the launcher over Ethernet if practical. A wired connection is a troubleshooting check, not a fix for an outage or an unrelated sign-in or file problem.
Use advanced network changes selectively
Rockstar’s connection article lists UDP ports 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458, and includes DNS configuration steps. Port forwarding or DNS changes can affect network security and other devices, so do not change them without a specific reason and a clear understanding of your router or network configuration. The article also suggests unplugging the router for about 10 minutes, then restarting the launcher.
Fix the specific error or failure
Error 6000.87
Rockstar describes error 6000.87 as a connection issue between the PC and Rockstar Games Services. Check service status first; if services are unavailable, wait and try again after they return. If services are Up, Rockstar’s documented local-profile refresh is:

- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and select Settings.
- Open Account Information and select Delete local profile.
- Confirm, then sign in again when prompted.
This removes locally stored profile details and requires another sign-in; Rockstar says it does not delete the account or saved games.
“We could not create a sign in token”
Rockstar says antivirus conflicts cause this error in most cases. For Windows 10 and 11, its guidance is to add the Rockstar Games Launcher installation folder to Windows Defender exclusions. If you use another antivirus or firewall, consult that product’s instructions for an appropriate exclusion. Avoid turning off security protection broadly as a first step.
“Failed to connect to the Rockstar Games Library Service”
Rockstar says a network connection problem or file permissions can prevent the launcher from updating. Check internet access and service status, then try running the launcher as administrator. If the issue persists, Rockstar documents a clean launcher reinstall; follow its instructions carefully and do not delete other files, because doing so could remove game data.

Rockstar’s troubleshooting instructions also describe temporarily turning off Windows Security real-time protection, restarting the launcher, and then turning protection back on. Treat this as a temporary troubleshooting step only, and restore protection immediately after the restart. If you use a different security product, use its own instructions rather than assuming the Windows Security steps apply.
A game will not launch or its files may be damaged
Use the launcher’s integrity check for the affected installed game:
- Sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Open Settings and select the installed game.
- Under Verify game file integrity, choose Verify Integrity.
Rockstar says verification can resolve several kinds of issues and update the game’s supporting files.

Can you play offline?
Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection, but some games or modes need an internet connection for activation or gameplay. Cloud synchronization and updating game files can also require a connection, so offline play is not a guaranteed workaround for a launcher sign-in problem.
For error 6000.87, Rockstar’s offline fallback has a specific prerequisite: you must previously have signed in on that same machine while online, with Remember Me enabled and Rockstar services available. Without that prior setup, offline access may not be available.
Gather diagnostics if the problem continues
If the official self-service steps do not resolve the issue, send the relevant information to Rockstar Support rather than posting system reports publicly. For Windows PC support, Rockstar lists these files:
- DXDiag and MSInfo.
- launcher.log.
- prelauncher.log if the launcher will not start.
Rockstar gives the default launcher log locations under DocumentsRockstar GamesLauncher. Include the exact error wording or a screenshot and explain when it occurs, whether the launcher opens, and whether one game or all launcher activity is affected.
