A Falcon 9 carrying satellites for the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) was scrubbed in the final minute of its countdown, but SpaceX had not publicly explained why as of October 9, 2026. The next launch opportunity was targeted for October 10. United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan, meanwhile, was expected to fly no earlier than October 29 on an Amazon Leo mission. That makes Vulcan’s return a notable development—not evidence that it is replacing Falcon 9 or gaining a decisive edge from this single scrub.

What happened to the Falcon 9?

Ars Technica reported that the countdown was stopped in the final minute, as Falcon 9 entered its automated startup sequence. The mission was to carry the SDA’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer A satellites. SpaceX had not disclosed a cause in the report, so the available information does not establish whether the scrub involved hardware, software, weather, or another issue. A scrub is a halted launch attempt; by itself, it is not proof of a vehicle failure.

The assigned first-stage booster, B1103, was making its sixth flight, according to Ars. Its earlier missions included SDA’s T1TL-E, NROL-179, and three Starlink batches. The report does not connect that flight history to the scrub.

When was the next launch opportunity?

Ars put the next opportunity at no earlier than Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 07:29 UTC, after an October 6 opportunity was waived. SpaceX’s official listing identified an SDA’s Fourth Tranche 1 Mission aboard Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) in California for October 10. These were schedule targets, not confirmation that the mission launched; launch listings can change.

What does Vulcan’s schedule say—and what does it not say?

Ars reported that ULA’s planned Vulcan return-to-flight mission, carrying an Amazon Leo payload, was targeted for no earlier than October 29. Amazon Leo vice president Rajeev Badyal told Ars, “I can say we’re weeks away from launching on Vulcan.” His comment expressed the company’s readiness expectation; it was not a confirmed launch date.

Badyal also said Amazon was working toward back-to-back Vulcan launches in 2026, with at least one additional Vulcan launch and one Arianespace launch that year. He said two Vulcan rockets were being processed in parallel in separate vehicle integration facilities. These are reported company plans, not completed launches or a guarantee of cadence.

Is this Vulcan’s time to shine?

Vulcan’s upcoming mission matters because Amazon has contracted with multiple launch providers—ULA, Blue Origin, Arianespace, and SpaceX—to diversify its launch partners. A Vulcan return would add a planned launch opportunity for Amazon Leo, while Falcon 9’s scrub was a delay to a separate SDA mission.

The available reporting does not show that ULA is taking Falcon 9’s place, that Vulcan has a decisive advantage, or that the scrub reflects a wider Falcon 9 reliability problem. It also provides no comparable performance, price, or reliability figures for the two vehicles. The sound conclusion is narrower: both programs had future missions on the calendar, and only the Falcon 9 countdown halt had occurred by the report’s October 9 publication.

Other developments in this Rocket Report

South Korea’s Nuri flight

Ars reported that South Korea’s Nuri rocket deployed five satellites for a domestically launched microsatellite constellation. Nine of ten secondary CubeSats reportedly separated as planned; PERSAT-02 did not separate. Ars described the launch as Nuri’s fourth consecutive success after its 2021 debut flight failed, and cited an overall success rate of 80 percent. Those details were reported by Ars with reference to Korea AeroSpace Administration information and Yonhap; the 80 percent figure should be read as the report’s attributed statistic, not an independently established calculation here.

HyImpulse’s next SR75 flight

Ars said German company HyImpulse moved its next SR75 suborbital flight from an end-of-2026 target to spring 2027. The report attributed the change to remaining licensing work and seasonal weather at SaxaVord.
