RoCE and InfiniBand can both deliver RDMA for distributed AI, but neither is a universal winner. RoCE carries RDMA over Ethernet (with RoCEv2 using UDP/IP), while InfiniBand uses a purpose-built fabric with its own management and congestion features. The right choice depends on your workload and collectives, cluster size and topology, congestion controls, existing network operations, compatibility-tested components, and benchmark results from your own models.
Start with the distinction that matters: RDMA versus the fabric carrying it
Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) lets one server move data directly into another server’s memory with little host-CPU and operating-system involvement. Distributed training, parameter synchronization, checkpoint transfers, and inference sharding can all use RDMA to reduce software overhead and improve predictability. RDMA is an interface and transport capability; it does not identify a particular physical network.
InfiniBand provides RDMA on a dedicated interconnect and fabric. RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) provides the same broad class of data movement over Ethernet. In both cases, the complete design includes server adapters, switch silicon, optics or cables, firmware, drivers, queueing and congestion settings, and management software. Comparing only the words “Ethernet” and “InfiniBand” hides the engineering decisions that determine results.

RoCEv1: a Layer 2 Ethernet protocol
RoCEv1 places RDMA traffic directly in an Ethernet frame using a dedicated Ethernet type. Because it is a Layer 2 protocol, it normally remains within one bridged Ethernet domain. That can simplify a small, flat cluster, but it limits the places where the traffic can be routed and makes the Layer 2 domain an important scaling boundary.

RoCEv2: routable RDMA over UDP/IP
RoCEv2 encapsulates RDMA transport in UDP/IP. NVIDIA’s MLNX_OFED documentation describes this as an extension that allows RoCE traffic to operate in IP Layer 3 environments. IP routing makes it possible to build routed leaf-spine or multi-rack topologies and to apply familiar Layer 3 addressing and routing practices. Routing does not remove the need to engineer loss, queueing, quality of service, and failure behavior; it only makes the traffic routable.
| Property | RoCEv1 | RoCEv2 |
|---|---|---|
| Encapsulation | Dedicated Ethernet type | UDP/IP |
| Typical routing scope | Layer 2 domain | Layer 3, subject to the configured IP network |
| Operational implication | Flat-domain planning and Layer 2 control | IP routing plus data-center congestion and QoS engineering |
Most new multi-rack designs evaluate RoCEv2 because of its Layer 3 capability. The exact behavior still depends on the adapter, switch, firmware, driver, and configuration versions you deploy.
What an InfiniBand fabric provides
InfiniBand is a dedicated interconnect rather than an Ethernet mode. Servers use InfiniBand-capable adapters and connect to InfiniBand switches through compatible links. A subnet manager discovers the fabric and programs forwarding paths. This separates the AI fabric from a general-purpose Ethernet network and gives the platform a defined management model.

Congestion is the central RoCE engineering problem
Ethernet familiarity does not make a RoCE fabric plug-and-play. Synchronous AI collectives can create incast: many senders transmit toward the same receiver or uplink at once. A queue that fills without a controlled response can drop packets, trigger retransmissions, and produce long-tail latency. A fabric that avoids drops by pausing traffic can instead propagate backpressure and create head-of-line blocking if priorities are poorly designed.
Priority flow control (PFC)
PFC pauses a selected traffic class rather than the entire link. NVIDIA’s Oracle deployment example discusses localized PFC, meaning the pause behavior is constrained to the relevant priority and ports. PFC must be scoped carefully: broad pause domains can spread congestion well beyond the original hot spot. Test pause storms, link failures, and mixed traffic before production.
Explicit congestion notification and DC-QCN
ECN marks packets when queues pass configured thresholds. Endpoints can react to those marks instead of waiting for loss. DC-QCN is one congestion-control approach used with data-center RDMA. Thresholds, marking points, rate adjustments, and priority mappings are hardware- and software-dependent. A configuration copied from another switch family can be wrong even when the command names look similar.

Observability requirements
Collect queue depth, ECN marks, PFC pause frames, retransmissions, link utilization, buffer occupancy, and per-priority drops. Correlate those counters with collective duration and GPU idle time. A network that looks healthy on average can still create training stalls through rare but repeated microbursts.

InfiniBand’s operational model is different, not maintenance-free
A dedicated fabric removes competition with ordinary Ethernet traffic, but it adds a separate control plane and inventory. The subnet manager must remain available and correctly configured. Adaptive routing and congestion features must be enabled and supported by the specific adapter and switch generation. Fabric health depends on link-level diagnostics, cable quality, firmware compatibility, and a disciplined upgrade sequence.
Plan how you will handle a failed switch, a flapping link, a replacement adapter, and a subnet-manager restart. Include those events in acceptance tests. A dedicated network can be easier to reason about when it is isolated, yet it still requires specialized skills and monitoring.
Bandwidth numbers need their qualification attached
NVIDIA’s MLNX_OFED version 23.10 documentation lists support for InfiniBand and RoCE interfaces up to 400 Gb/s in that software and hardware context. That is a documented interface ceiling, not a head-to-head benchmark and not a promise that every adapter, switch, cable, or link will operate at 400 Gb/s. Effective application throughput is reduced by protocol overhead, encoding, topology, oversubscription, congestion, and the behavior of the collective library.

Build a complete, compatible candidate design
Start with the server and accelerator requirements, then work outward. A port’s advertised speed is useful only when every element in its path can sustain the required mode.
- Define traffic. List the frameworks and collective operations you will run, message-size distribution, synchronization pattern, checkpoint traffic, inference service-level objectives, and target GPU utilization.
- Define the topology. Record node count, rack count, leaf-spine or other topology, uplinks, oversubscription ratio, path diversity, and whether storage or tenant traffic shares the fabric.
- Select adapter mode. For RoCE, decide whether RoCEv2 is required and confirm UDP/IP and VLAN or routed operation. For InfiniBand, confirm the adapter generation, link width, and supported fabric features.
- Match switches and links. Validate switch port speeds, buffer behavior, breakout modes, transceivers, passive or active cables, maximum distances, and supported optics. NVIDIA’s January 2026 deployment examples are tied to specified components and versions; use the equivalent version-specific guidance for your hardware.
- Lock software versions. Record firmware, kernel, driver or OFED package, RDMA libraries, collective communication library, and accelerator software versions. Obtain a support matrix for the exact combination.
- Design management and telemetry. Specify subnet-manager placement for InfiniBand or IP routing, QoS, ECN/PFC policy, time synchronization, configuration backup, alert thresholds, and access controls for RoCE.
- Test failure behavior. Remove a link, reboot a switch, restart the routing or subnet-management component, and replace a cable. Measure recovery time and verify that collectives fail cleanly or recover as designed.
RoCE deployment checklist
- Prefer RoCEv2 for a routed multi-rack design unless a documented requirement keeps the fabric within Layer 2.
- Map RDMA traffic to a dedicated priority and document VLAN, DSCP, ECN, and PFC behavior end to end.
- Configure PFC narrowly enough to avoid a fabric-wide pause domain; test for pause propagation and deadlock-like conditions.
- Set ECN marking and endpoint response parameters consistently across adapters and switches.
- Verify that every routed hop preserves the required MTU, UDP ports, QoS markings, and telemetry.
- Monitor PFC pause duration, ECN marks, retransmissions, drops, queue depth, and link errors by port and priority.
- Use the deployment guide for the exact adapter, switch, firmware, and driver versions rather than a generic “lossless Ethernet” recipe.
InfiniBand deployment checklist
- Choose a supported adapter, switch family, cable or optic, firmware, and driver combination from one compatibility plan.
- Deploy and protect the subnet manager; document its placement, redundancy, and restart procedure.
- Confirm whether adaptive routing, congestion control, and in-network aggregation are available and enabled on the chosen platform.
- Verify partitioning, access controls, telemetry, and isolation if multiple teams or workloads share the fabric.
- Measure link health, symbol errors, retransmissions, and fabric topology changes continuously.
- Stage firmware and driver upgrades on a test segment, then validate collective performance before rolling changes cluster-wide.
How to benchmark the two designs fairly
A fair comparison changes the network while holding the workload and software stack constant. Use the same server and accelerator configuration, message sizes, collective library, process placement, topology shape, and target utilization. Run enough repetitions to capture tail behavior, not only the best iteration.
Minimum test set
- Point-to-point bandwidth and latency at small, medium, and large messages.
- All-reduce, all-to-all, broadcast, and reduce-scatter patterns representative of your training and inference jobs.
- Concurrent jobs to expose multi-tenant interference and queue contention.
- Near-peak offered load to reveal congestion response and tail latency.
- Link, switch, route, and management-component failures during active communication.
- Long-duration runs that expose thermal, firmware, buffer, or error-counter drift.
Record effective application throughput, collective completion time, p50 and tail latency, GPU idle time, retransmissions, PFC and ECN counters, link errors, and recovery time. Keep configuration files and firmware identifiers with each result so another engineer can reproduce it. A benchmark that uses a synthetic microtest alone cannot answer whether a network will meet the training job’s time-to-solution target.

RoCE is a strong candidate when
- Your organization already operates large routed Ethernet fabrics and can extend those practices to RDMA-specific QoS and telemetry.
- You need RoCEv2’s Layer 3 routing across racks or pods.
- You want to integrate AI traffic with established Ethernet automation, addressing, and spare-parts processes.
- Your team is prepared to own congestion tuning, packet-marking consistency, pause-domain design, and detailed observability.
InfiniBand is a strong candidate when
- You want a physically and operationally separate AI fabric with a defined subnet-manager workflow.
- Your selected platform provides the adaptive-routing or congestion features your collective pattern needs.
- Your operations team can support dedicated adapters, switches, cabling, firmware, and fabric diagnostics.
- The cluster’s scale and workload justify a purpose-built interconnect rather than integration with an existing Ethernet domain.
Neither label is enough when
- The proposed adapter, switch, cable, driver, and firmware versions have not been validated as a set.
- The team has no plan for congestion telemetry, failure recovery, or mixed-traffic isolation.
- The procurement decision relies on a single vendor number instead of representative workload tests.
- Total cost is being estimated without installation, support, spares, management, power, and staff requirements.
Costs and procurement: what can and cannot be concluded
The cited material does not provide a neutral total-cost comparison. Ethernet equipment may fit existing procurement and operational processes, while RoCE still requires RDMA-capable adapters, suitable switches, compatible optics or cables, and engineering time for congestion control. InfiniBand requires its own adapters, switches, links, management, spares, and skills. Which design costs less depends on port counts, oversubscription, support contracts, power, rack layout, labor, and the value of faster or more predictable job completion.

Common failure modes and recovery paths
Training is fast in a microbenchmark but slow at scale
Check oversubscription, collective placement, incast hot spots, queue thresholds, PFC pause counters, ECN marks, and retransmissions. Compare per-rack and cross-rack traffic; a flat test may not exercise the congested path.
RoCE links never become reachable
Verify that both endpoints use the intended RoCE version, that VLAN or IP addressing and MTU match, that UDP traffic is allowed across every routed hop, and that the driver exposes the expected RDMA device. Confirm switch QoS classification before changing congestion thresholds.
Pauses spread across unrelated traffic
Inspect priority mappings and PFC configuration on every hop. Narrow the pause domain to the RDMA class, remove accidental priority inheritance, and test recovery under a controlled load.
InfiniBand paths change unexpectedly
Check subnet-manager logs, topology changes, link errors, and adaptive-routing state. Confirm that the switch and adapter firmware support the routing behavior you enabled and that a restart or failover leaves one authoritative manager.
After an upgrade, performance or connectivity changes
Compare firmware, driver, OFED, kernel, and collective-library versions against the previous known-good set. Re-run link, collective, congestion, and failure tests before returning the entire cluster to production.
Bottom line
Choose the fabric you can design, validate, and operate end to end. RoCE offers RDMA on Ethernet and, with RoCEv2, Layer 3 routing that can fit established data-center networks; it demands disciplined congestion control and observability. InfiniBand offers a dedicated fabric and platform-specific management and routing features; it demands dedicated components and specialized operations. The defensible procurement decision is the one backed by a compatible bill of materials, explicit failure and congestion behavior, and reproducible tests using your AI workloads—not a claim that one network is always faster or cheaper.
