Robotics and physical AI companies have raised nearly $48 billion so far in 2026, according to a figure attributed to PitchBook by Traders Union. That is a reported funding total—not a measure of how much companies have spent on collecting training data. The reported data-gathering effort spans robot gyms and recordings of people doing everyday work in factories, offices and homes.

What does the nearly $48 billion figure mean?

Traders Union reported the year-to-date total on October 10, 2026, attributing it to PitchBook. PitchBook’s public Robotics & Physical AI pages list quarterly reports, including a Q2 2026 report dated September 1, but the accessible pages do not display the nearly $48 billion total or explain its calculation. The figure should therefore be treated as a secondary report of PitchBook data, not a total independently confirmed by the public PitchBook pages.

Nor does the funding headline show that the money went to training data. The reported story describes companies investing in data collection, services and computing, but gives no sector-wide breakdown connecting the funding total to those costs. Traders Union also says its article draws in part on Financial Times reporting; it does not provide a complete PitchBook methodology or a consolidated spending analysis.

Why do robots need recordings of people doing tasks?

Robotics models must interpret what a camera sees and how physical actions change the environment. Text and images gathered from the public web do not, by themselves, provide the same examples of movement, contact and task completion. Companies are seeking data that connects observations to actions in real settings.

How are companies collecting physical AI training data?

Robot gyms with human operators

One approach is to have operators guide robot arms through tasks in dedicated facilities. These robot gyms let teams capture demonstrations in a controlled setting, where equipment and tasks can be arranged for repeated collection. They are distinct from recordings made while people work in their normal environments.

First-person recordings in real workplaces and homes

Another approach uses cameras or recording kits to capture a person’s view while they perform ordinary tasks. The Traders Union account describes collection in factories, offices, homes and holiday rentals. Such recordings can show the sequence and context of a task; the article also notes depth and force-related data as useful modalities, which can add information beyond ordinary video.

External data providers and distributed collection

Companies may also work with outside data suppliers rather than relying only on their own facilities and staff. The article reports a Scale AI data factory in Mexico City and Xdof facilities in Shenzhen and Jakarta, alongside collection operations in the United States, Mexico, China and Indonesia. These are reported examples, not a complete map of industry activity.

What trade-offs shape data collection?

Control versus realism

A robot gym can offer repeatable demonstrations in a managed environment, while in-situ recordings capture work as it occurs in actual homes and workplaces. The approaches produce different kinds of examples; the reporting does not include a controlled comparison showing that one produces better robot performance.

Video versus richer sensor information

First-person video can record what a worker sees, while depth and force-related information can describe aspects of space and physical interaction that video alone may not convey. The source identifies these as useful modalities but does not report a common dataset specification or quantify the benefit of adding each type.

Geography, pay and working conditions

Traders Union estimates that U.S. robotics operators earn about $25 an hour and that pay in Mexico is roughly half that level, drawing on Glassdoor data and job listings. The article does not identify the specific listings or its sampling method, so these are article-level estimates, not a comprehensive wage comparison. It also raises questions about compensation for data-collection workers as operations spread across countries.

Consent, provenance and reliability

Recordings made in homes and workplaces raise practical questions about who agreed to be recorded, how workers are compensated, and whether the data accurately represents the task it is meant to teach. The account flags these concerns but does not establish how common problems are across the industry. Using outside providers can also make it important for buyers to understand how data was captured and documented.

Capture costs versus demonstrated gains

Collecting, organizing and processing physical-world examples takes effort, and training also requires computing resources. The article says researchers and startups are still testing whether larger datasets improve model outputs. It paraphrases UC Berkeley’s Ken Goldberg as cautioning that more data is not guaranteed to produce the hoped-for gains; this is a reported caution, not a universal result for every robotics system.

Does more training data automatically make robots better?

No automatic improvement is established by the reporting. Data volume alone does not show whether examples are accurate, varied, representative of the tasks a robot must perform, or useful to a particular model. The account provides no controlled performance comparison among collection methods or dataset sizes. The relevant question is whether a defined dataset produces measurable improvement on the intended tasks that justifies its collection and computing costs.
