Short answer: you cannot make a robotaxi completely sensor-free. Location data is required to dispatch the vehicle, find the pickup point and route the trip, while exterior cameras are part of the automated-driving system. You can still reduce optional collection: restrict the app’s phone permissions, enter a pickup point manually when available, leave analytics sharing disabled, avoid enabling Waymo’s cabin microphones, watch Tesla’s camera and microphone indicators, and use each provider’s privacy-rights tools after the ride.
Tesla and Waymo make different promises about cabin sensors. Tesla says its cabin camera and microphone are off by default for ordinary rides, with support, occupancy and safety exceptions. Waymo says its interior microphones are on only for Rider Support calls or when a rider actively enables them; its interior cameras remain operator-controlled for defined service and safety purposes. Neither provider documents a rider-controlled switch that disables all vehicle cameras.
What you can and cannot control
Robotaxi privacy has three separate data paths: your phone and account, the vehicle’s interior sensors, and the vehicle’s exterior driving sensors. Treating them as one setting leads to false expectations. Phone permissions can limit what the app learns from your handset, but they cannot stop the vehicle from knowing its own position. An in-car microphone setting does not disable exterior cameras, and a physical lens cover cannot switch off a sensor controlled by the fleet operator.

The practical goal is therefore data minimization, not total sensor shutdown: share only what is needed for the ride, keep optional analytics off, and exercise deletion or access rights afterward.

Why a robotaxi needs location data
A service must know where to send a vehicle, where to stop and which route to follow. Tesla associates mobile-device and vehicle location with the ride and processes precise location according to the app permissions you grant. Its workflow can process precise location when the app is opened, when you request a ride or until the ride ends, depending on those permissions. The vehicle also has its own position, so limiting phone location does not make the trip anonymous.
Waymo lists pickup and drop-off points, route information and device-location data among the information used to provide rides. Precise mobile location is collected with permission. In both services, location is functional data rather than an optional cabin feature: removing it entirely can prevent dispatch or make pickup unreliable.
Use the least-privileged phone permission
Before requesting a ride, open your phone’s settings, find the robotaxi app and choose the least-privileged location option that still lets you complete pickup. The exact labels vary by operating system, but the choices generally distinguish continuous access from access only while the app is in use. Recheck the setting after an operating-system update because mobile platforms can reset or re-prompt permissions.

Enter the pickup point manually when Tesla offers it
Tesla explicitly supports manual pickup entry. Typing the pickup location can reduce the app’s dependence on continuous handset positioning during the pickup workflow. It does not remove location processing: Tesla still handles the ride request, vehicle position and route, and the app may process precise location during the periods described in its privacy notice.

Leave optional analytics disabled
In the Tesla Robotaxi app, look for the controls named Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics. Both are opt-in analytics features. Leave them off unless you deliberately want to contribute cabin video or sound data for analytics. Turning them off does not stop every possible sensor event: Tesla describes separate support, occupancy-detection and safety-event exceptions.

Understand the default cabin-camera and microphone behavior
Tesla’s Robotaxi Privacy Notice states that “Cabin camera and microphone are not used by default (until needed).” A normal ride therefore does not mean continuous default recording under that statement. The exceptions matter:
- A support request can activate the cabin camera or microphone so an issue can be investigated.
- Occupancy detection can activate the cabin camera for a vehicle-function purpose.
- A safety event can cause short recordings or related transmission.
- Early-access riders in limited areas may face broader default exterior-camera, cabin-camera and sound-detection collection than ordinary riders.
Because the early-access program can change the default, check your account or ride-program status instead of assuming that the standard setting applies to you.

Tesla provides an in-ride signal. A green indicator in the touchscreen menu bar means the cabin camera is active. An orange indicator means the microphone is being used. If an indicator appears unexpectedly, note the time and contact support after reaching a safe stop; do not obstruct the sensor while the vehicle is moving or while support is handling an incident.
Know what exterior cameras can still do
Tesla says exterior-camera processing is normally local. However, short clips associated with a safety event can be transmitted and linked to the account. The documented limit is up to 30 seconds for a safety-event camera clip; that is a maximum recording length, not a statement about how often events occur. Fleet-learning material may be handled differently and is described as anonymous in the provider’s materials. There is no rider setting that disables the exterior driving cameras.
Use Tesla’s post-ride privacy requests
After a trip, Tesla’s account and privacy-request channels can be used to seek access, correction, restriction or deletion of personal data, or to withdraw consent where local law permits. Device permissions and in-app sharing toggles control future collection; a formal privacy request is the route for records already associated with your account. Keep in mind that legal, safety or operational obligations can limit what is deleted or when a request takes effect.

Waymo: explicit microphone limits, operator-controlled cameras
Keep the cabin microphones off unless you need them
Waymo’s published rule is unusually specific: “The microphones inside the car are only on during voice calls with Rider Support or when you actively choose to enable microphones inside the car.” Do not enable the cabin microphones for convenience if you do not need that feature. A Rider Support call is an intentional exception; the microphone must be available for the conversation.

What Waymo says about interior cameras
Waymo describes interior cameras as tools for cleanliness checks, lost-item recovery, emergency assistance, enforcement of ride rules and service improvement. The cameras are operator-controlled, so the published material does not provide a passenger-operated camera-off switch. If you report a problem, support may review relevant video. In urgent circumstances, support may access live video to help respond to an emergency.
Waymo also states that it does not use facial recognition or other biometric-identification technologies to identify individuals. Its August 24, 2026 explanation says the cameras are designed for core functions such as mapping routes, delivering services safely and improving the technology, “not to surveil people or to identify individuals through facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies.” That statement describes the stated purpose; it does not turn the cameras into a rider-disable feature.
Limit phone-based location data
Set the Waymo app to a permission level that supports pickup without granting broader background access than you want. Waymo can still process pickup and drop-off details, route data and the vehicle’s operational location as part of providing the ride. Restricting handset location therefore reduces one source of data but cannot remove the trip record.
Manage history and request your data
Waymo provides controls to view or edit trip history, change location permissions, delete the account and download a copy of personal data. Use the published privacy-rights process when you need a formal request rather than simply changing a future permission. Deleting an account may not erase information that must be retained for safety, legal or fraud-prevention reasons.

Advertising choices are separate from ride operation
Waymo offers Do Not Sell or Share and universal choice-signal options for targeted advertising. These controls can be limited to the browser or device on which you set them. They address advertising disclosures, not the operational location, routing or safety data needed to complete a ride, so set both the advertising preference and the app permissions if you want broader minimization.
Privacy checklist before you request a ride
- Check the app’s location permission. Choose the least-privileged option that still supports pickup. If the app offers a one-time or while-in-use choice, prefer it over unrestricted background access when practical.
- Use manual pickup entry where supported. Tesla explicitly offers manual entry. Confirm the address or landmark carefully so reduced handset access does not create a missed pickup.
- Review optional analytics. In Tesla, verify that Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics are off unless you want to opt in.
- Check your program status. Tesla early-access riders in limited areas may have additional default exterior-camera, cabin-camera and sound-detection collection.
- Decide whether you need support audio. For Waymo, do not enable cabin microphones unless you need an in-car voice feature or are calling Rider Support.
- Plan for a support or emergency exception. No privacy setting overrides a safety response. A support request or emergency can activate sensors so the operator can assist.
What to do during the ride
Use indicators and documented activation rules
In Tesla, watch for the green camera and orange microphone indicators. Their appearance tells you that the corresponding cabin sensor is active. In Waymo, remember the documented microphone rule: activation occurs for Rider Support calls or when you actively enable the microphones. Interior-camera operation is controlled by the service for the purposes it lists.
Do not obstruct sensors
Do not place tape, a lens cover, clothing or another object over a vehicle camera, and do not attempt to disconnect a microphone. Such actions cannot be relied on to disable operator-controlled sensors and may interfere with occupancy detection, support, emergency response or safe operation. A phone pouch or Faraday bag likewise affects your handset, not the robotaxi’s own sensors.
Handle a concern without creating a safety problem
If a Tesla indicator remains on and you do not understand why, or if you believe a Waymo camera is being used outside the stated purposes, wait until the ride is safely complete and record the trip time, vehicle identifier and what you observed. Contact the provider through its support or privacy channel rather than distracting yourself or the vehicle while it is moving.

- Recheck phone permissions if you granted temporary access for pickup.
- Confirm Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics remain off if you do not want future opt-in sharing.
- Use Tesla Account controls and the privacy-request channel for access, correction, restriction, deletion or consent withdrawal where available under local law.
- Ask specifically about the trip or event if your concern involves a safety clip or a support interaction; ordinary app toggles do not necessarily erase an existing record.
Waymo
- Review or edit trip history using the account controls.
- Change the app’s location permission back to your preferred level.
- Download your personal-data copy if you need a record of what is held.
- Submit an account-deletion or other privacy-rights request through Waymo’s published process.
- Set Do Not Sell or Share or a universal choice signal separately if your concern is targeted advertising.
Common misconceptions about robotaxi privacy
“Turning off phone location makes the ride untraceable.”
It does not. Dispatch needs a pickup point, and the vehicle knows its own location. Phone permission changes what the app can obtain from your handset; it does not erase ride, route or vehicle-location records.

“A cabin-camera analytics opt-out disables every Tesla camera.”
It does not. The analytics controls are optional sharing choices. Tesla still documents support, occupancy and safety-event exceptions, and exterior cameras remain part of the driving system.
“Waymo’s microphone rule means no interior sensing at all.”
It applies to the microphones. Waymo separately describes operator-controlled interior cameras for cleanliness, lost items, emergencies, rule compliance and service improvement.
“A privacy accessory can switch off the robotaxi.”
It cannot. Covers, microphone blockers and phone pouches affect a device or obstruct a sensor; they do not change fleet software or operator controls and can impair assistance or safety functions.
A practical privacy decision framework
Choose controls according to the information you are trying to limit:
- Concerned about your phone’s continuous location: use the least-privileged app permission and manual pickup entry where available.
- Concerned about optional Tesla analytics: keep Cabin Camera Analytics and Sound Detection Analytics off and monitor the green and orange indicators.
- Concerned about Waymo cabin audio: do not enable the microphones except for a Rider Support call or a feature you intentionally use.
- Concerned about interior video: understand that Waymo does not describe a rider camera-off switch and Tesla retains support, occupancy and safety exceptions.
- Concerned about records after the trip: use Tesla privacy requests or Waymo’s history, download, deletion and rights processes rather than relying only on device settings.
- Concerned about advertising: set Waymo’s Do Not Sell or Share or universal choice signal separately from operational ride permissions.
The result is a narrower data footprint while preserving the information each service needs to dispatch, route and support the vehicle. Complete sensor isolation is not an available rider setting in either provider’s documented controls.
