Choose a robot vacuum by how well its features match your floors, rugs, clutter, furniture, and tolerance for upkeep—not by its highest suction figure or longest feature list. Mapping helps a robot plan and lets you direct cleaning; obstacle avoidance tries to keep it from running into objects. For homes with hard floors, the mop mechanism and dock matter just as much as navigation. Measure tight clearances and thresholds, then verify each candidate’s exact model and regional specifications.

Start with your home, not the feature list

Before comparing robots, note the conditions they will actually face. A floor plan, a few measurements, and an honest estimate of how much clutter remains on the floor will narrow the choices faster than a headline specification.

  • Flooring: Record which rooms have carpet, rugs, hard floors, or transitions between them. Mixed flooring makes mop handling and carpet behavior important; mostly hard flooring puts more emphasis on mop performance and its maintenance.
  • Hair and debris: Consider pets, long hair, and the kinds of debris the robot must collect. Brush or roller design and airflow affect pickup as well as suction, so look for a design and upkeep routine suited to your household—not just a large Pa number. ECOVACS’s buying guide discusses these factors.
  • Clutter: Look for cords, shoelaces, clothing, toys, and other loose objects that might catch in a roller or stop a robot. Estimate how often you can clear them before a run; obstacle detection is not a substitute for floor preparation.
  • Furniture and thresholds: Measure the lowest clearance under furniture the robot should clean beneath, and the height and shape of the tallest sill or floor transition it must cross.
  • Layout: Count rooms and floors. Decide whether you need room-by-room cleaning, restricted zones, or saved maps for more than one level.
  • Upkeep: Decide whether you are willing to empty a bin, wash mop pads, refill water, and clean brushes yourself, or want a dock to automate some of those jobs.

These observations become your shortlist criteria. A robot that fits a tidy, single-level home with mostly hard floors may be a poor match for a cluttered house with several rugs, low furniture, and multiple levels.

Mapping and obstacle avoidance solve different problems

Mapping and navigation help a robot determine where it is, plan routes, cover rooms, and respond to app instructions. Object detection attempts to identify or avoid things in its immediate path. One capability does not guarantee the other: a robot can create a useful map without reliably recognizing small objects on the floor.

What navigation technology tells you

Manufacturers describe several approaches, including LiDAR, camera-based navigation, and simpler sensor-based systems. These are ways to navigate, not a complete measure of cleaning quality. Check what the exact model does with its map and whether its navigation method suits the home; the word “mapping” by itself does not tell you whether it recognizes cords or avoids toys.

Vacuum Wars’ 2026 buyer’s guide, updated September 30, 2026, reports that camera-plus-3D-sensor systems have produced the strongest averages in its tests. Treat that as the publisher’s test summary, not a guarantee that every such robot will outperform every alternative in your rooms. The reviewed sources do not establish a consistent independent, cross-brand test set covering every buying criterion in this guide.

Map controls worth checking in the app

A map is useful only if the app lets you act on it. Check the controls available for the model in your region, and whether they work across all the maps you need. Useful functions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Room naming or room division, so the map corresponds to how you use the home.
  • Directed cleaning of selected rooms rather than a whole-home run.
  • No-go zones or virtual boundaries for places the robot should not enter.
  • Multiple stored maps if the robot will clean more than one floor.

ECOVACS’s mapping page describes no-go zones and multiple maps. iRobot UK Support’s Imprint Smart Maps guide explains map customization and room or zone controls. Those sources establish feature examples, not that every model or regional app offers the same controls. Check the exact product and app documentation before buying.

What object detection can—and cannot—do

Object avoidance depends on the sensors and implementation, so compare the named detection claims rather than treating “smart navigation” as proof that the robot will avoid everyday obstacles. For example, Kärcher describes its RCV 5 as pairing LiDAR with dual lasers and a camera for object detection. That is a manufacturer description of one product, not an independent assessment of how reliably it avoids every object.

Small or low objects and flexible items remain practical hazards. iRobot’s UK Support guide warns that “rogue clothes, shoelaces, cords, or any obstacle” can catch in rollers or leave a robot stuck. Clear likely snags before cleaning even if a model advertises object recognition. A clear floor also gives mapping runs a better chance of recording the spaces you want the robot to clean.

Choose a mop system that suits your floors

Mopping matters most when hard floors account for a meaningful share of the work. Compare not just whether a robot “mops,” but how the mop is fitted, how water is controlled, what edges it reaches, and what happens when it encounters a rug or carpet.

Compare the mop mechanism and water controls

A simple mop attachment and a system that washes and dries its mop hardware at the dock impose different amounts of work on you. Check the model’s mop type, whether water adjustment is available, and how the manufacturer describes edge coverage. The sources reviewed do not provide comparable independent figures for mopping performance across all brands, so avoid treating a feature label as a performance ranking.

Plan for rugs and carpet

On mixed floors, verify whether the robot lifts its mop, removes the wet mop hardware, or avoids carpet while in mop mode. These are different approaches; do not assume a robot will protect rugs just because it can map rooms or detect carpet. Vacuum Wars identifies mop lifting or automatic removal as useful features for mixed floors. Kärcher says the RCV 5 avoids carpets in mop mode; that is a manufacturer statement about that model. Consult the precise model’s manual for its behavior and any conditions or setup required.

Account for water and mop upkeep

Check whether the dock washes and dries mop hardware or refills water, and whether those functions are included on the exact model or SKU you are considering. A dock that automates more can reduce routine handling, but it also makes the system larger and more involved. Include pad washing, water handling, and any model-compatible consumables in your maintenance decision rather than assuming the robot is hands-off.

Match brushes, dust handling, and suction to the debris

For pet hair, long hair, carpet, or frequent debris, compare brush construction and anti-tangle features alongside dustbin capacity and whether an auto-empty dock is included. Look for instructions on cleaning the brushes and rollers: a design that performs well but requires more frequent manual untangling may not fit a low-maintenance household.

Suction figures are not directly interchangeable evidence of pickup performance. ECOVACS says brush or roller design and airflow also affect pickup. Consider the surfaces and debris in your home, and seek independent tests that use comparable conditions if you want to rank actual cleaning results.

One model-specific example illustrates why qualifications matter: ECOVACS states that the DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone has up to 19,500 Pa suction, based on ECOVACS laboratory information on its 2026 page. This is a manufacturer figure for that model, not an independently verified comparison or a category-wide benchmark.

Check clearances and threshold claims before ordering

Physical fit is part of navigation. Measure the height of the robot against the lowest furniture it needs to pass under; a map cannot make a robot fit beneath a sofa. Measure the tallest threshold or transition, too. Compare the measurement with the exact model’s specified crossing limit, while allowing for the fact that threshold shape and surface can affect whether a robot actually crosses it.

For the DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone, ECOVACS states a barrier-crossing figure of up to 1.57 inches from its laboratory. TP-Link lists up to 2 cm (0.79 in) threshold climbing for the Tapo RV30 Plus on its product specification page. These are separate, manufacturer-stated figures for specific models; they are not comparable independent tests or promises for every threshold. Check the specifications and manual for the exact SKU, then compare them with the real obstacle at home.

Choose the dock by the work you want to avoid

Dock features vary. Some models may empty dust; more involved systems may also wash and dry mop hardware or refill water. Compare the functions actually included with the specific SKU rather than assuming that a product family’s dock description applies to every variant.

Think through the routine after a cleaning run: what will you still have to empty, wash, refill, or clear? A dock that automates more can save handling, but adds equipment and maintenance of its own. If you prefer a simpler system, a less elaborate dock may be a better fit than paying for automation you do not need. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for any required bags, pads, filters, or other consumables, and confirm compatibility by exact model number.

Compare candidates against one home-specific checklist

Use the same questions for each candidate so a long specification sheet does not distract from the features that matter in your home.

Criterion What to record Why it matters
Navigation and maps Navigation method; room naming or division; room-directed cleaning; no-go zones; number of stored maps Determines how you can direct coverage and whether the robot can manage your layout.
Obstacle avoidance Sensor types and specifically named objects or detection claims Mapping alone does not establish that small objects, cords, or clothing will be avoided.
Mopping Mop mechanism; water adjustment; edge behavior; mop lifting, removal, or carpet avoidance Shows how the robot handles hard floors and transitions to rugs.
Brush and hair handling Brush or roller design; anti-tangle features; cleaning instructions Helps match upkeep and pickup needs to pets, long hair, carpet, and debris.
Dust and dock Bin handling; auto-emptying; mop washing and drying; water refilling; consumables Clarifies which regular tasks are automated and what maintenance remains.
Physical fit Robot height; stated threshold limit; your measured furniture clearance and threshold Prevents a navigation feature from being mistaken for physical access.
Regional support App and account compatibility; map capacity; exact model and SKU documentation for your region Feature availability and specifications can differ by model or region.

For performance rankings, look for independent tests that compare the models under similar conditions and cover the criteria you care about. Manufacturer product pages are useful for confirming claimed features and model-specific specifications; they are not independent comparative test results. Prices, availability, specifications, and regional compatibility can change, so verify the current documentation for the exact SKU before purchasing.

If most floors are hard

Compare mop type, water control, edge coverage, and which cleaning tasks the dock automates. A basic attachment can make sense if you accept more manual upkeep; a wash-and-dry dock addresses a different maintenance preference.

If floors are often cluttered

Inspect the object-detection claims and sensors closely, but base the purchase on what the robot claims to recognize—not a general promise of obstacle avoidance. Decide whether the household can clear cords, clothing, and small objects before runs.

If the home mixes rugs and hard floors

Make mop lifting, mop removal, or carpet avoidance a specific verification item. Confirm the exact behavior in the model documentation rather than inferring it from mapping or carpet-detection features.

If there are multiple floors, low furniture, or tall transitions

For multiple levels, confirm saved-map capacity and regional app support. For low furniture and raised thresholds, measure first and compare with the exact robot height and model-specific crossing claim. These are separate fit checks; a robot that supports multiple maps may still be too tall or unable to cross a sill.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Equating mapping with avoidance: Mapping supports route planning and app control; it does not prove the robot will recognize loose objects.
  • Buying on suction alone: Brush design and airflow also influence pickup, and a manufacturer’s “up to” number is not an independent cleaning score.
  • Assuming all mops protect rugs: Verify whether the exact model lifts or removes wet mop hardware or avoids carpet in mop mode.
  • Trusting a threshold figure without measuring: Compare your obstacle’s height and shape with the model-specific claim; do not treat a stated maximum as a universal guarantee.
  • Overlooking what the dock still requires: Check which tasks it automates, which maintenance remains, and which consumables fit the exact model.
  • Assuming features transfer across a product family: Check exact model, SKU, app, and regional support rather than relying on a series name or another region’s listing.
