A reliable robot-training pipeline treats every demonstration as a versioned episode, not as an anonymous video file. Capture synchronized video, robot state, actions, timestamps, calibration and task context; label the task and outcome; run integrity and sensor checks before training; then preserve provenance and publish a manifest that names exactly which episodes were used. This sequence prevents bad synchronization, incomplete trajectories and ambiguous labels from becoming expensive model failures.
What a robot-training data pipeline must produce
The useful output is a reproducible set of episodes that a training program can read and a reviewer can audit. Each episode should connect the operator’s instruction, the robot embodiment, all sensor streams, control actions, outcome labels and quality evidence. Keep the original capture immutable and create cleaned recordings, labels, reports and manifests as derived versions. If a labeling rule changes, you can re-review from the same source rather than silently altering an old training run.
Use the episode as the unit of record
An episode begins when the task starts and ends when the task is complete, abandoned or interrupted by a safety event. Store one stable episode identifier across video, state, actions, labels and review decisions. Include capture time, software version, robot and sensor identifiers, calibration files, consent or licensing status and checksums. These fields let you determine what changed between two training datasets.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

At minimum, record camera streams, joint and end-effector state, actions sent to the controller, timestamps and task context. Keep the clock source and time units explicit. A video frame without a trustworthy timestamp cannot be aligned safely with an action or force reading, even if the files appear complete.

Write the label specification before collecting demonstrations
A label specification defines what counts as a usable episode and makes annotation decisions consistent across operators. It should be approved before collection, with examples of acceptable and unacceptable cases.
Required episode labels
| Label or field | What it records | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Natural-language task | The instruction a policy is expected to follow | Conditioning language or searching by intent |
| Task ID | A stable integer or string linked to the task text | Grouping equivalent instructions |
| Robot embodiment | Robot model, arm configuration and relevant end-effector | Preventing incompatible demonstrations from mixing |
| Sensor and action schema | Camera names, image dimensions, joint fields, action units and rates | Parser and model-input validation |
| Episode boundaries | Start and end timestamps or frame indices | Removing setup and teardown footage |
| Sub-task segments | Named intervals such as approach, grasp, transfer and release | Skill analysis and segment-level training |
| Outcome | Success, failure, interrupted or unknown | Filtering and evaluation splits |
| Failure type | A controlled category with optional notes | Diagnosing policy and data problems |
LeRobotDataset uses a tasks.jsonl metadata file to map natural-language task descriptions to integer task indices. A similar mapping prevents spelling variants from becoming separate tasks. Define a controlled failure taxonomy, such as grasp miss, collision, object drop, timeout, communication loss or safety stop; allow an explicit unknown value instead of forcing reviewers to guess.
Make boundaries and outcomes defensible
State whether the initial robot pose and final settling motion belong to the episode. Mark idle starts separately from meaningful action. A success label should refer to an observable task condition, not an operator’s impression. For failures, record both the immediate cause and whether the episode remains useful for a particular purpose, such as failure-recovery training.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Raw capture: original video, state, action and calibration files, write-protected after ingestion.
- Normalized episodes: resampled or converted streams with documented units and time bases.
- Metadata and labels: task mappings, boundaries, outcomes, failure categories and annotator decisions.
- Automated and human QA: machine-generated metrics, reviewer notes, dispositions and timestamps.
- Versioned manifests: the exact episode IDs, checksums and data versions selected for a training run.
Keep checksums beside each artifact. Record capture software, robot firmware where relevant, calibration revision, clock configuration, consent and licensing state, and parent artifact IDs. Local-first tools can keep recordings and QA reports on lab disks when data cannot leave the facility; a separate encrypted backup protects against disk failure without changing the canonical identifiers.
Plan capacity and transfer deliberately
Video dominates storage, while high-rate state and action logs add many small records. Estimate capacity from cameras × resolution × frame rate × codec bitrate × hours, then add normalized copies, QA artifacts and backups. Robo-DM’s 2025 paper identifies storage and transmission efficiency as central issues for large robot datasets. A portable external SSD can speed local import, replay and export, but interface, sustained write rate, encryption and capacity must match your camera workload; there is no universal drive specification for every lab.
Choose a format your training stack can read
Use a container that preserves synchronized streams and metadata, then expose a simple catalog for search and curation.
| Format or combination | Strength | Trade-off or use case |
|---|---|---|
| MCAP | Suitable as an input and output boundary for time-stamped robotics streams | Keep a schema and conversion version so downstream readers interpret channels identically |
| Parquet plus MP4 | Columnar tables for state, actions and labels with efficient video files; compatible with LeRobot-style datasets | Synchronization and codec metadata must remain linked to each episode |
| RLDS | Dataset representation used by the DROID distribution | Adopt the documented schema and conversion tools when targeting RLDS consumers |
| Parquet catalog | Queryable index for provenance, metrics, labels and review decisions | It is an index, not a replacement for the underlying sensor artifacts |
DROID documentation lists a 1.7 TB full download and a 2 GB example dataset for prototyping. Use the small example to validate readers and training code before moving multi-terabyte collections. HFlow describes MCAP boundaries, provenance and a Parquet catalog; OhhO Data describes LeRobot-compatible Parquet with MP4 and also supports MCAP.

Run automated checks before expensive training
Checks should fail loudly and produce episode-level evidence. Store the measured value, threshold, result and checker version rather than only a pass or fail.
1. Integrity checks
- Confirm every required file and stream exists and can be decoded.
- Check that episode duration, frame counts and sample rates are plausible for the task.
- Verify timestamps are monotonic, units are known and clock alignment stays within a tolerance you specify.
- Ensure referenced calibration and metadata files are present and checksums match.
Integrity checks come first because later quality or diversity analysis is meaningless when an episode is incomplete. Calibra specifically lists timestamp synchronization, episode completeness and camera-freeze or duplicate-frame detection as initial checks.
2. Sensor-health checks
- Detect frozen cameras by comparing consecutive frames and frame timestamps.
- Find duplicate or missing frames, unusual exposure, saturation and blur.
- Identify dropped IMU, joint or force samples and unexpected rate changes.
- Compare calibration markers or reprojection evidence over time to flag drift.
Set thresholds per camera, lens, lighting condition and task. A blur score that is acceptable for a slow tabletop scene may be unusable for a fast grasp.
3. Trajectory and safety checks
- Flag idle starts, action dropouts, communication gaps and excessive latency.
- Reject impossible joint positions, velocities or accelerations according to the robot’s limits.
- Look for abrupt jerk spikes, collisions, protective stops and emergency interruptions.
- Compare commanded and observed motion when both are available.
4. Semantic checks
- Confirm the task text describes what the robot actually attempted.
- Review episode and sub-task boundaries against the video and state timeline.
- Verify that success, failure and failure-type labels are supported by observable evidence.
- Record disagreements and adjudication rather than overwriting the original annotation.
5. Coverage and duplication checks
Cluster behaviors and scenes to reveal overrepresented operators, objects, viewpoints or environments. Detect near-duplicate demonstrations so a training split does not appear larger than its independent evidence. Check that failure modes and successful variations are represented deliberately. Pareto describes visual, trajectory and endpoint consistency checks, behavioral clustering, near-duplicate detection and searchable episode-level evidence for this stage.

Decide what to keep, drop or review
Use a disposition with a reason: keep for training, drop for irreparable corruption, downweight for unusual but valid behavior, review for unresolved ambiguity, or annotate when a new label is needed. Never delete a raw episode to make a metric improve. A later manifest can exclude it while preserving the evidence and decision history.
Publish a version-pinned training manifest
The manifest is the contract between curation and training. It should identify dataset version, episode IDs, artifact checksums, schema version, label vocabulary, checker versions, acceptance thresholds and split assignment. Include exclusions and their reasons so another engineer can reproduce the selection.

Set thresholds for your robot, sensors and task
No broadly applicable industry number establishes an annotation-error rate, a universal synchronization tolerance or a universal storage cost. Define acceptance limits from controller requirements, sensor specifications and task dynamics. For example, a high-speed insertion task may require tighter alignment than a slow pick-and-place task. Document who approved each limit, how it was measured and when it changes.

How to evaluate pipeline tools or a vendor
Compare systems against the same acceptance test, not a feature checklist alone.
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Formats | Can it ingest and export your MCAP, Parquet, MP4 or RLDS schema without losing timestamps? |
| Synchronization and calibration | Can it measure clock offsets, preserve calibration revisions and enforce configurable tolerances? |
| Automated QA | Are completeness, freezes, duplicates, blur, dropouts and trajectory limits configurable and auditable? |
| Human review | Can reviewers inspect synchronized evidence, adjudicate conflicts and retain prior labels? |
| Provenance | Does every derived artifact point to its source, software version and checksum? |
| Coverage analysis | Can it find near-duplicates and report scenes, operators, objects and failure modes? |
| Deployment and privacy | Can it run locally when recordings cannot leave the lab, with consent and licensing controls? |
| Export | Does the output load directly into the intended training stack and preserve the manifest? |
An RFP should state sensor requirements, label definitions, delivery format, QA acceptance criteria, consent and privacy handling, licensing and ownership, plus calibration and synchronization tolerances. Require a sample report that includes failed episodes and reasons, not only aggregate pass rates.
A repeatable operating procedure
- Approve the label specification, failure taxonomy and threshold owners.
- Calibrate sensors and record the calibration revision with the capture session.
- Capture synchronized streams with an episode ID and explicit clock metadata.
- Ingest to immutable storage and verify checksums and decodeability.
- Normalize units, schemas and filenames without overwriting raw files.
- Run integrity, sensor-health and trajectory checks; write metrics and checker versions.
- Route failures and uncertain labels to human review with synchronized evidence.
- Run semantic, coverage and near-duplicate analysis on the surviving set.
- Assign keep, drop, downweight or review decisions with reasons.
- Export a version-pinned manifest and archive the reports needed to reproduce it.
What the published results do—and do not—show
Calibra’s 2026 project results page reports 99.5% of full-data performance on its PushT example while using 75% less training data. That is a project-reported result on the listed public datasets, not a guarantee that every robot can remove three quarters of its demonstrations. Treat it as motivation to measure curation quality on your own tasks, with fixed evaluation splits and documented exclusions.
