Short answer: A boundary wire is a physical perimeter that a compatible mower detects. Ordinary GPS can help some mowers estimate coverage or locate areas that still need cutting, but its accuracy is measured in metres and it should not be treated as a precise virtual fence. RTK is a corrected satellite-positioning system that can let supported mowers follow virtual boundaries, usually within centimetres. The right choice depends on your mower model, yard layout, open-sky visibility, internet access and whether you prefer wiring or app-based mapping.
Robot mower GPS vs RTK vs boundary wire at a glance
These terms describe different parts of a robotic mower’s navigation system, not three interchangeable names for the same feature. “GPS” is a satellite-positioning method. “RTK” (real-time kinematic) adds correction data to satellite measurements to improve the position estimate. A boundary wire is a physical signal loop installed around the mowing area.
| Decision point | Boundary wire | GPS-assisted coverage | RTK virtual boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| What defines the mowing area? | A physical wire installed around the perimeter and any exclusion areas. | GPS may help the mower understand coverage or map areas; it does not automatically replace the specified physical boundary. | A software-defined boundary mapped in a compatible mower’s app using corrected satellite positioning. |
| Typical installation | Lay or bury the wire as the mower manufacturer specifies, then connect and test the loop. | Use the mower’s documented setup; many GPS-assisted models still rely on a wired perimeter. | Map the boundary in the app and configure either a cloud correction service or a local reference station when the model supports those options. |
| Positioning figures in Husqvarna documentation | Wire performance is not expressed as a satellite-accuracy figure. | Older X-line GPS-assisted navigation: 3–5 metres; AIM zones: approximately 1 metre. | Cloud positioning: typically better than 5 centimetres; local reference station: typically better than 2 centimetres. |
| Main dependencies | Correct installation, an intact wire loop and compatible mower electronics. | Model-specific GPS and mapping support, plus whatever boundary system the mower requires. | A compatible mower, adequate sky view and a working correction-data connection; cloud mode also needs internet, while a local station needs suitable placement and power. |
| Best fit | Properties where a physical perimeter is acceptable or satellite reception is unreliable. | Owners who want coverage assistance on a mower that already uses its specified boundary system. | Owners who want adjustable virtual zones and have a model and yard that meet the system’s satellite and correction requirements. |
The figures in this table are vendor-reported Husqvarna specifications for particular systems and model contexts, not a universal ranking of every robotic mower.
What a boundary-wire mower actually does
A boundary-wire system uses a low-voltage signal loop installed around the lawn. The mower’s perimeter sensor detects that signal and treats the wire as the edge of its work area. You can route the loop around flower beds, ponds, trees, play equipment and other areas that should remain outside the mowing zone, provided the mower’s installation instructions allow those shapes and clearances.

Installation and maintenance
- Plan the perimeter. Mark the lawn edge and every exclusion island before placing wire. Account for slopes, narrow passages and places where the mower must cross between sections.
- Install the loop. Lay or bury the wire using the depth, fastening method and clearances specified for your mower. Connect both ends to the charging station or boundary terminal.
- Run the mower’s boundary test. Confirm that it detects the loop consistently at the perimeter and around each island before starting an unattended schedule.
- Inspect after landscaping. Edging, aeration, construction and animal damage can break or expose the wire. A break can stop boundary detection and may require tracing and repairing the loop.
Wire is not “low technology” in a negative sense. It gives the mower a dedicated physical reference that does not depend on satellite visibility or an internet connection. Its trade-off is the labor of installation and the need to preserve the cable over the life of the lawn.
What ordinary GPS contributes
Standard GPS determines a position from satellite signals, but the raw position is not precise enough to act as a dependable lawn-edge fence. Husqvarna states that standard GPS is accurate only to a few metres. Its support guidance says that this is not precise enough for an Automower to navigate reliably within lawn boundaries.
GPS-assisted navigation is mainly about coverage
On older X-line models, Husqvarna describes GPS-assisted navigation with a precision of 3–5 metres. The mower can use that information to estimate which parts of the mapped area have already been cut and which parts may need attention. That improves movement planning, but it does not establish a centimetre-accurate virtual perimeter.
Husqvarna’s AIM zoning documentation gives an approximately 1-metre figure for mapped zones. That is a more useful planning resolution than unaided GPS, yet it is still distinct from the corrected positioning used for a virtual boundary. Treat any claim that simply says “GPS boundary” cautiously: check whether the mower has a physical wire, an RTK system or only GPS-assisted coverage features.
How RTK turns satellite positioning into a virtual boundary
RTK is a correction technique applied to GNSS satellite positioning. The mower receives satellite signals, while a reference source supplies correction data that accounts for errors affecting the position solution. A supported mower can then compare its corrected position with virtual lines and zones that you draw in its app.

Husqvarna describes its EPOS system as RTK GNSS positioning with correction data. Depending on the model and market, corrections can arrive through Husqvarna Cloud or from a local reference station. In its homeowner EPOS guidance, Husqvarna reports cloud positioning typically better than 5 centimetres and local reference-station positioning typically better than 2 centimetres.
Those numbers describe the complete system under suitable conditions; they are not a guarantee that the cutting edge of every mower will stay exactly that distance from a boundary in every yard. Accuracy can be affected by sky visibility, multipath reflections, the mower’s hardware, correction availability and the way the virtual map was created.

Cloud positioning sends correction data over the mower’s supported internet connection, such as Wi-Fi or mobile data. Husqvarna says cloud operation depends on a stable internet connection across the work area. If correction data is lost, the mower may pause and then resume when the signal improves. Cloud correction avoids installing a separate reference station, but the mower still needs usable satellite reception and reliable connectivity where it operates.
Local reference station
A local station receives satellite signals at a fixed location and delivers corrections locally. Husqvarna reports typical positioning better than 2 centimetres for this arrangement and says navigation does not require internet access once the local system is operating. The station itself still needs power and a clear view of the sky.
Husqvarna’s US EPOS guidance specifies an open 135-degree view of the sky for the reference station. The charging station and mower also need suitable satellite visibility. If you move the reference station after mapping, Husqvarna says you must recreate the virtual map because the system’s reference geometry has changed.

Cloud RTK or a local station?
| Characteristic | Cloud correction | Local reference station |
|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna homeowner accuracy figure | Typically better than 5 cm. | Typically better than 2 cm. |
| Internet requirement for navigation | Yes; the mower needs a stable connection for correction data in the work area. | No internet is required for navigation after the local system is installed and operating. |
| Physical installation | No separate reference station, but the mower and property need dependable connectivity. | Station placement with an open 135-degree sky view and a power outlet. |
| What happens during a correction outage? | The mower may pause and resume when the correction signal returns. | Navigation can continue locally if the station and satellite reception remain available. |
| Mapping consequence of relocation | Follow the model’s mapping procedure if connectivity equipment or charging location changes. | Moving the reference station after mapping requires recreating the virtual map, according to Husqvarna’s US guidance. |
Husqvarna also publishes commercial-system examples that should not be combined with the homeowner figures: RS 4G is typically 1–2 centimetres within 10 kilometres, Cloud is typically 1–6 centimetres, and RS5 is typically 1–2 centimetres. Those values apply to different products and contexts.

No—not every robot mower needs boundary wire. A mower designed for RTK virtual boundaries can operate without a perimeter cable when its model, correction service and yard satisfy the manufacturer’s requirements. A conventional wired mower does need its boundary loop, and a GPS-assisted mower may still require that same loop even though GPS helps it plan coverage.
Read the exact model specification rather than relying on a “GPS” label. Ask four questions before buying or removing wire:
- Does this model support virtual boundaries, or only GPS-assisted coverage?
- Which correction source does it use: cloud, a local reference station, or both?
- What sky-view and connectivity conditions does the manufacturer require?
- Does it support a physical wire as a fallback in weak-signal areas?
Can a robot mower work without boundary wire?
It can when the mower is specifically built for wire-free operation, normally through an RTK-based virtual-boundary system or another manufacturer-supported positioning method. Removing the wire from a mower that was designed around a wired perimeter will not make it wire-free; the mower may lose its reference and leave the intended area.
Some supported RTK models offer “Support by wire.” Husqvarna describes this as an option for weak-signal locations such as narrow passages or areas around dense trees. It is a model-specific fallback, not a universal capability of RTK mowers. Verify support in the manual for the exact mower and market.

Is RTK better than GPS for a robot mower?
For precise virtual boundaries, RTK is the more suitable technology because correction data can reduce positioning error from metres to centimetres on a supported system. Ordinary GPS remains useful for broad coverage planning, but its documented precision is not sufficient to serve as a reliable virtual fence by itself.
“Better” depends on the job. A physical wire may be more dependable than RTK on a heavily obstructed property, while RTK may be preferable when you frequently change zones, want to avoid trenching and can provide the required sky view and connectivity. RTK also introduces setup choices and failure modes that a wire-only system does not have.
How to decide for your yard
Choose boundary wire when
- The yard has buildings, dense tree canopy or other obstructions that make satellite reception inconsistent.
- You want a system that continues to define the perimeter without cloud service or a local reference station.
- You are comfortable installing and maintaining a cable, or an installer can do it for you.
- Your preferred mower model does not support RTK virtual boundaries.
Choose GPS-assisted coverage when
- You are buying a model whose primary boundary system is already suitable for your property.
- You want the mower to improve coverage planning or identify areas that may still need mowing.
- You understand that the GPS feature does not automatically remove the need for boundary wire.
Choose RTK virtual boundaries when
- You want to create or edit mowing zones in software instead of relocating physical wire.
- Your mower explicitly supports RTK and the correction option available in your market.
- The charging area, work zones and any reference station have the required open-sky view.
- Cloud connectivity is dependable, or you can install a local reference station with power.
RTK installation: a practical sequence
- Confirm compatibility. Check the exact model number, firmware requirements, market and supported correction method. “GPS-enabled” alone does not prove RTK or wire-free boundary support.
- Survey the property. Walk the proposed charging location and all mowing zones. Look for buildings, retaining walls, dense trees and narrow corridors that could block or reflect satellite signals.
- Choose the correction method. Use cloud correction only where the mower can maintain the required internet connection. Select a local station when local correction is supported and a powered, open-sky mounting point is available.
- Install the station if required. Follow the model’s mounting instructions. Husqvarna’s US EPOS guidance calls for an open 135-degree sky view and a power outlet.
- Map the charging point and boundaries. Use the manufacturer’s app to create the perimeter, exclusion areas, passages and work zones. Keep the mower and station in their final positions before mapping.
- Run a supervised test. Watch the mower approach every edge, passage and exclusion area. Confirm that it pauses or turns where expected before enabling a full schedule.
- Record the installation. Save the station location, map version and any wire sections used as a fallback. This makes later troubleshooting and remapping easier.
Sky visibility and connectivity are installation requirements, not fine print
Satellite systems work best with a broad, unobstructed view of the sky. Buildings and dense trees can weaken or interrupt the signal. A charging station under a roof, beside a tall wall or beneath heavy canopy may produce a different result from a station in an open area even when the mower itself is identical.
Cloud RTK adds a second condition: the mower must receive correction data throughout the area it cuts. A strong internet signal at the house does not prove that the mower will maintain connectivity at the far end of the lawn. Test the actual mowing area, not just the location of the router or cellular gateway.
Weak-signal symptoms and fixes
The mower stops or pauses unexpectedly
In a cloud-correction setup, a correction-data outage can make the mower pause until the signal improves. Check the mower’s connection status, then inspect Wi-Fi or mobile coverage at the stopping location. If the interruption occurs beside trees or a building, test a clearer route or consider the manufacturer-supported wire fallback.

The mower drifts near an edge
First verify that the virtual map was created with the charging station and reference station in their final positions. Check for a blocked sky view, a moved station or an incorrectly placed boundary point. Do not assume that ordinary GPS accuracy will hold a virtual perimeter; a model without RTK may need its physical wire.
A previously reliable area becomes unreliable
Look for environmental changes: a new shed, temporary construction, tree growth, a moved charging station or a relocated reference station. Husqvarna says moving a local reference station after mapping requires recreating the virtual map.
A narrow passage repeatedly loses position
Narrow corridors and dense tree cover are common weak-signal locations. On models that support it, a physical boundary wire can provide a local fallback through that section. Because “Support by wire” is not universal, confirm the feature before designing the installation around it.

Accuracy claims need context
Centimetre figures are system specifications, not promises that every mower will cut to an identical line in every weather and landscape condition. Husqvarna’s published values are tied to its own EPOS hardware, correction services and installation guidance. Commercial examples such as RS 4G, Cloud and RS5 use different products and operating contexts from homeowner EPOS documentation.
The available documentation also does not establish an independent, cross-brand test of reliability under tree cover or a comprehensive market-wide comparison. Treat vendor figures as useful design targets, then validate the exact mower in your own yard during a supervised test.
Compatibility and market checks before purchase
- Model and year: Support can differ between models and model years, even within one product family.
- Region: Cloud services, mobile connectivity and included features can vary by country.
- Correction availability: Confirm whether your mower uses cloud corrections, a local station or both.
- Accessories: A compatible local reference station is not interchangeable across all models.
- Installation help: Husqvarna directs customers to dealers for installation services and accessories; verify the dealer’s support for your exact mower and property.
Bottom line
Boundary wire is a physical, predictable perimeter; ordinary GPS is mainly a metre-scale aid for coverage; RTK is corrected satellite positioning that can support centimetre-scale virtual boundaries on compatible mowers. Choose wire when signal conditions or simplicity favor a physical loop, GPS assistance when you want better coverage planning on a wired system, and RTK when your mower, yard, sky view and connectivity support reliable virtual mapping. The label on the box matters less than the exact model’s boundary method and installation requirements.
