Robocopy is usually the better choice for a large network batch made up of many small files, provided you are comfortable with a command line and can tune /MT. Microsoft specifically warns that File Explorer and other single-threaded copy tools can deliver very low SMB throughput in that workload. File Explorer remains the easier option for a graphical, one-off local copy, and the available Microsoft guidance does not establish that Robocopy is universally faster for every drive, file mix, or computer.
The practical answer
Choose the tool according to the workload rather than the word “large.” A folder containing 500,000 small documents behaves very differently from a folder containing four 20-GB disk images. The destination also matters: copying between local disks is not the same as copying across an SMB network share.
| Situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Many small files on an SMB share | Robocopy with a measured /MT value |
Microsoft identifies single-threaded copying as a cause of poor throughput in this workload, while Robocopy can transfer files in parallel. |
| A few very large files | Either tool; test the actual path | Robocopy offers /J for unbuffered I/O, documented as useful for large files, but that is not a guaranteed advantage over Explorer. |
| One-off copy between local folders | File Explorer | It provides a familiar graphical workflow with no command syntax to learn. |
| Repeatable jobs, logs, filtering or scripted operations | Robocopy | Options can define the copy scope, metadata, concurrency and log destination. |
| Unreliable network connection | Robocopy with /Z, when resuming matters |
Restartable mode can resume an interrupted file, although the extra logging can reduce performance. |
There is no controlled, universal Robocopy-versus-Explorer benchmark in the Microsoft material available for this comparison. Actual results depend on file-size distribution, storage latency, network capacity, antivirus inspection and the CPU and memory available on both ends.

File Explorer
File Explorer is Windows’ graphical file manager. You select files or folders, choose Copy, open the destination, and choose Paste. It is easy to see the source and destination, review overwrite prompts and cancel a job without memorizing switches. That simplicity is valuable for an occasional local transfer or for someone who does not need a repeatable command.

For a network share, enter a UNC path such as \servershare in the address bar, select the source items, press Ctrl+C, open the destination and press Ctrl+V. Explorer handles the interaction, but Microsoft describes Explorer and other single-threaded copy tools as a potential bottleneck when a network job contains a large number of small files.
Robocopy
Robocopy is Microsoft’s command-line file-copy utility. You run it from Command Prompt or PowerShell and specify the source, destination and options. Its strength is control: you can include subdirectories, preserve selected metadata, run concurrent file transfers, write a log and choose restart behavior.
The command line also makes a job repeatable. The same command can be saved in a script or run again after correcting a network problem. That precision comes with risk: an incorrect path or an aggressive option can copy a different tree than intended, and some modes can remove destination files.
Why many small network files are a special case
Every file transfer has setup work: opening a file, requesting metadata, negotiating SMB operations, transferring the contents and closing the handle. With thousands of tiny files, that per-file overhead can dominate the bytes actually sent. Network latency and server-side processing amplify the effect.
Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting guidance states: “Slow copy speeds and low network throughput are expected behavior when transferring a large number of small files over the network using File Explorer and other single-threaded copy tools.” The documented scenario can produce throughput below 1 MB/s, but that figure is a warning about a particular workload, not a promised speed or a benchmark for every Explorer copy. See Microsoft’s slow SMB file-transfer guidance.

Robocopy can keep multiple file operations in flight with /MT. Parallelism helps hide some latency, so it is most relevant to many-small-file SMB copies. It does not remove limits imposed by a slow disk, a saturated link, server quotas, encryption, antivirus scanning or a destination that cannot accept more concurrent work.
How file size and location change the choice
Many small files over SMB
This is the clearest case for trying Robocopy. Begin with a modest thread count, measure the complete job and then adjust. Microsoft documents eight threads as the /MT default and permits values from 1 through 128. More threads are not automatically faster; Microsoft recommends testing because excessive concurrency can hurt performance. The relevant tuning discussion is in Microsoft’s SMB file-server performance guidance.
A few large files
Large files spend more time transferring payload data and less time on per-file setup. Robocopy’s /J option uses unbuffered I/O and is documented as recommended for large files in the Robocopy reference. That recommendation does not prove a fixed speed advantage over File Explorer. Test both approaches if the transfer is important and the files are genuinely large.
Local disks
On local storage, the network-latency problem disappears. A fast NVMe source and destination may be limited by storage throughput, while a hard-drive destination may be limited by seek time. Robocopy can still be preferable for logging, repeatability or metadata control, but the evidence for a special Robocopy performance advantage is specifically strongest for small-file SMB workloads, not all local copies.
Mixed folders
A real backup often contains documents, photos, application data and large media files together. Measure the whole tree rather than extrapolating from one unusually fast or slow subfolder. If the small-file portion dominates elapsed time, a moderate /MT setting may help; if large files dominate, storage and link capacity are likely to matter more.

Robocopy options that affect the decision
| Option | What it changes | When to consider it | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
/E |
Copies subdirectories, including empty ones. | Backups or migrations where the directory structure must be retained. | It expands the copy scope; confirm the source before running. |
/COPY:DAT |
Copies data, attributes and timestamps. | When those basic file properties should be retained. | It does not mean every possible security or ownership setting is copied. |
/MT:n |
Runs multiple file transfers concurrently; the documented range is 1–128 and the default is 8. | Especially useful to test for many small files over SMB. | Too many threads can reduce performance or increase contention. |
/J |
Uses unbuffered I/O. | Large individual files, as recommended in Microsoft’s reference. | Do not assume it improves every workload. |
/Z |
Enables restartable mode so an interrupted file can resume. | Unstable links where avoiding a complete restart is valuable. | Extra logging can reduce performance; Azure Files guidance specifically warns about this trade-off. |
/LOG:path |
Writes copy output to the specified log file. | Audits, unattended jobs and troubleshooting. | Ensure the log directory exists and is writable. |
/MIR |
Mirrors the source tree, including deleting destination items absent from the source. | Only when the destination must exactly track the source. | A wrong source or destination can cause destructive deletions. |
For option syntax and interactions, consult the official Robocopy command reference before combining switches.

1. Define the copy before opening a terminal
- Write down the exact source and destination paths.
- Decide whether empty directories should be retained.
- Decide which metadata matters: data, attributes and timestamps are covered by
/COPY:DAT. - Decide whether a restartable transfer is worth the performance cost.
- Choose a log location on a disk that will remain available for the duration of the job.
Do not begin with /MIR merely because the task is called a backup. A normal copy and a mirror have different destination semantics.
2. Run a conservative recursive copy
Microsoft documents this pattern for a recursive copy that includes empty directories, retains data, attributes and timestamps, uses 16 threads and writes a log:
robocopy C:UsersAdminRecords D:Backup /E /COPY:DAT /MT:16 /LOG:C:LogsBackup.log
The paths and the thread count are examples, not universal optimum settings. Replace them with your real paths, create the log directory first, and start with a modest concurrency level.
3. Tune concurrency by measurement
- Copy a representative sample containing the same mix of small and large files as the real job.
- Start at the default of eight threads or another modest value.
- Record elapsed time, observed network utilization and whether the source or destination becomes saturated.
- Repeat with a higher value only if the first run leaves clear capacity and does not increase errors or contention.
- Keep the setting that performs best on the actual source, destination and network, rather than assuming 128 threads is better.
Microsoft’s performance guidance supports testing instead of promising a fixed multiplier. A thread count that helps one server, link or storage pair can slow another.

4. Use /J for a large-file test
For a directory dominated by very large files, add /J and compare the complete transfer with a run that omits it. For example:
robocopy C:Video D:Video /E /COPY:DAT /J /MT:8 /LOG:C:LogsVideo.log
This example combines options that have different purposes: /J changes I/O behavior, while /MT changes concurrency. Check the reference and your destination semantics before deploying a combined command widely.
5. Add restartable mode only when the link needs it
For a connection that frequently drops, consider /Z so an interrupted file can resume. Microsoft’s Azure Files migration guidance warns that restart mode can reduce performance because of additional logging. Use it when avoiding a full restart has greater value than maximum throughput, not as a default speed setting. The trade-off is described in Microsoft’s Robocopy guidance for Azure Files migration.
6. Treat mirroring as a separate, destructive operation
A mirror command can look deceptively simple:
robocopy C:Source D:Destination /MIR
/MIR can delete files and directories in the destination that are not present in the source. Before using it, verify both paths, protect or snapshot the destination if possible, and confirm that deletion is genuinely required. For a one-way archival copy, use a non-mirroring command such as the /E example instead.

When File Explorer is the better tool
File Explorer is a sound choice when the job is local, occasional and easy to verify visually. It is also preferable when another person must perform the transfer without learning Robocopy syntax or interpreting a log.

- Open the source folder in File Explorer.
- Select the required files or the entire folder tree.
- Press
Ctrl+Cor choose Copy from the context menu. - Open the destination folder or network share.
- Press
Ctrl+V, review any conflict prompts and allow the transfer to finish. - Check a sample of files and the destination folder structure before deleting the source.
This workflow minimizes command-line mistakes, but it gives you less explicit control over concurrency, restart behavior, metadata selection and persistent logging. For a repeatable monthly job or a migration that must be audited, those limitations become more important than the convenience.
How to decide without guessing
| Question | If the answer is yes | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Are there tens of thousands or more small files on a network share? | Yes | Test Robocopy with a modest /MT value first. |
| Is this a one-time local drag-and-copy task? | Yes | File Explorer is usually the simplest choice. |
| Must the job be rerun identically? | Yes | Save a Robocopy command and its log path. |
| Does the connection routinely interrupt? | Yes | Consider /Z, accepting possible throughput loss. |
| Must data, attributes and timestamps be retained? | Yes | Specify and verify /COPY:DAT rather than relying on an implicit default. |
| Should destination-only files be deleted? | Yes | That is a mirror requirement; review /MIR carefully. |
| Is the operator uncomfortable with command-line tools? | Yes | Use File Explorer unless the job’s scale or repeatability justifies training and testing. |
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The network copy is below 1 MB/s
First determine whether the tree is dominated by small files and whether the destination is SMB. Microsoft’s below-1-MB/s warning applies to some small-file, single-threaded scenarios; it is not proof that your network or disk is defective. Try a measured Robocopy run with /MT, then check whether storage, antivirus scanning or the server becomes the new bottleneck.
More threads made the job slower
Reduce the thread count and retest. Too much parallelism can create contention in the source disk, destination disk, SMB server or security software. Keep the fastest stable result, not the largest number.
The transfer stopped and restarting wastes hours
For an unstable connection, evaluate /Z. It is designed to make an interrupted file resumable, but its extra logging can reduce speed. If the link is stable, omitting restartable mode may deliver better throughput.
You need proof of what was copied
Use /LOG: with a specific path and retain the resulting file with the job record. A log is especially useful when a scheduled or unattended transfer must be reviewed later.
Files disappeared from the destination
Check whether /MIR was used. Its purpose includes removing destination items absent from the source. Stop using the command until both paths and the intended synchronization policy have been verified; recover deleted data from an independent backup if necessary.
Metadata does not match expectations
Review the copy scope. The documented /COPY:DAT pattern covers data, attributes and timestamps. If your requirement includes other classes of metadata, consult the Robocopy reference and test on a nonproduction folder before running the migration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bottom line for this comparison
For many small files crossing an SMB network, Robocopy is the stronger technical choice because it can perform parallel transfers and expose controls that Explorer does not. Start conservatively, measure on the real workload and avoid assuming that a higher thread count guarantees improvement. For a straightforward local copy, a graphical workflow or an operator who needs immediate visual feedback, File Explorer remains the practical choice. Neither tool wins every workload, and the available Microsoft documentation does not support a universal claim that Robocopy is faster.
