Short answer: The R22 and R44 share Robinson’s basic two-bladed, teetering main-rotor layout. Each uses all-metal blades, coning hinges, a teeter hinge and droop stops. They are not the same rotor installation, however. The R44 uses a larger drive path with four double V-belts instead of the R22’s two, model-specific gearbox-and-mast hardware, and hydraulically boosted main-rotor controls. Treat every mast, shaft, gearbox, yoke, mount, shim and control part as model- and serial-number specific rather than interchangeable.
R22 and R44 rotor systems at a glance
The two helicopters look related because they use the same fundamental Robinson rotor concept: a two-bladed, teetering main rotor with coning hinges and droop stops. That common architecture does not make the assemblies identical. The R44 scales the transmission and control installation for a larger aircraft, and its maintenance procedures identify different assemblies and components.

What both helicopters share: the teetering rotor concept
Two blades attached through coning hinges
Robinson describes the R22 main rotor as two all-metal blades mounted to the hub by coning hinges. The R44 handbook uses materially the same description. A coning hinge lets each blade move in the vertical plane as lift and centrifugal forces change, allowing the rotor to assume its operating cone without requiring a fully articulated multi-blade head.
This is a structural description, not a statement that an R22 blade, hub or hinge can be fitted to an R44. The shared wording identifies the operating principle; it does not establish common dimensions, materials, part numbers, allowable damage limits or overhaul instructions.

The teeter hinge and droop stops
In both models, the hub is mounted to the main-rotor shaft through a teeter hinge. The two blades can therefore flap as a pair about the teetering axis: when one blade flaps up, the other moves down. Droop stops provide friction restraint when the rotor is slowing or starting, when aerodynamic lift is low and the blades would otherwise hang downward.
The teetering arrangement explains why the R22 and R44 belong to the same design family, and it also explains why pilots and mechanics must respect Robinson’s low-G and rotor-RPM procedures. A common hinge layout does not remove the need to use the correct flight handbook for the specific model.
Tail-rotor similarity does not mean part interchangeability
The cited handbooks also describe two all-metal tail-rotor blades and a teetering hub on both aircraft. That is useful when comparing their design philosophy, but it is not a parts-compatibility statement. Tail-rotor hubs, blades, bearings, pitch links and attachment hardware still require the correct model, revision and serial-number applicability.

The R22’s low-inertia wording—and what it does and does not tell you
The R22 Pilot’s Operating Handbook explicitly states: “The R22 has a light, low-inertia rotor system.” It explains that much of the energy available during autorotation is stored in the helicopter’s forward motion rather than in rotor inertia. As a result, maintaining rotor RPM and timing the flare are especially important parts of R22 handling.
That sentence should not be transferred to the R44 as if it were a published specification for both aircraft. The cited R44 handbook does not provide a directly comparable inertia statement. Without a model-specific engineering value, it is safer to describe the R44 as retaining the same teetering architecture while avoiding an unsupported claim about its rotor inertia relative to the R22.

- Architecture: both helicopters use a two-bladed, teetering head with coning hinges and droop stops.
- Dynamic behavior: rotor inertia, RPM response and energy management must be taken from the applicable aircraft handbook, not inferred from the number of blades alone.
How the mast fits into the gearbox and drive train
A rotor mast is not presented in Robinson’s maintenance documentation as a universal tube that can be moved between models. The mast is part of a main-rotor gearbox-and-mast installation. The assembly includes the model-specific shaft, gearbox, yoke or hub interfaces, mounts, shims, couplings and service procedures that establish alignment and load paths.
R22 drive path
The R22 maintenance manual identifies an “A006 MAIN ROTOR GEAR BOX & MAST ASSY.” Its drive-train description follows this path:
- Two double V-belts transmit engine power to an upper sheave.
- An overrunning sprag clutch allows the rotor system to continue driving during autorotation if engine power is lost.
- Power passes through a clutch shaft and flexible couplings.
- A single-stage, splash-lubricated spiral-bevel main gearbox turns the drive for the main rotor.
The number of belts is a concrete hardware difference: the R22 installation uses two double V-belts. Belt count alone does not describe every dimension or rating, but it is enough to show that the R22 drive installation is not the R44’s.
R44 drive path
The R44 maintenance manual identifies a “C006 Main rotor gearbox and mast assembly” and a separate “C251 Main rotor shaft.” Its drive-train description specifies four double V-belts, an overrunning clutch, flexible couplings and a single-stage, splash-lubricated spiral-bevel main gearbox.
The shared overrunning-clutch and spiral-bevel principles show continuity with the R22. The four-belt installation and different assembly designations show the scaling that matters for maintenance and parts control. The documents do not establish that the R44 mast has a particular diameter, wall thickness or inertia, so those details should not be guessed from the model’s larger size.

Four double V-belts distribute drive transmission through the R44 installation differently from the R22’s two. That affects the applicable belt inspection, tensioning, replacement and alignment instructions. It also means that a belt, sheave, clutch component or gearbox interface selected for one model cannot be approved for the other merely because both aircraft have a two-bladed rotor.

Gearbox mounting, shims and mast alignment
Both helicopters use a mounted gearbox-and-mast installation that must be aligned in the airframe. The details are model-specific.
R22 mounting procedure
The R22 maintenance manual requires leveling the gearbox mounting pads with shims and describes four main gearbox mounting bolts. Shim position and thickness are not cosmetic records: they establish the gearbox’s installed relationship to the airframe and drive system. Any removal or replacement therefore requires the R22 procedure and the specified inspection and torque data.
R44 mounting procedure
The R44 Pilot’s Operating Handbook states that the main gearbox is supported by four rubber mounts. The R44 maintenance manual also instructs mechanics to record the location and thickness of leveling shims when removing the gearbox. The combination of rubber mounts and documented shim records is a reminder that the R44 installation has its own support and alignment requirements even though the overall layout resembles the R22.

Why a “same mast” visual inspection is inadequate
A mast can look similar while differing in shaft geometry, bearing arrangements, attachment interfaces, approved limits or installation shims. A visual comparison cannot establish fatigue life, part-number applicability or airworthiness. For an actual replacement, identify the aircraft serial number, consult the current model maintenance manual and verify the exact part number and effectivity with an authorized Robinson maintenance organization.
R44 hydraulic boost changes control feel, not the rotor concept
The R44 Pilot’s Operating Handbook states: “Hydraulically-boosted main rotor flight controls eliminate cyclic and collective feedback forces.” A pump driven by the main gearbox supplies hydraulic pressure to three servos connected to the push-pull tubes supporting the swashplate.
This is a major pilot-interface difference. The R44 still has the same broad two-bladed, teetering rotor architecture, but hydraulic assistance changes how much aerodynamic and rotor-system feedback reaches the cyclic and collective. It also introduces a pump, hydraulic lines, servos, fluid and associated inspection and failure procedures that are not part of the basic R22 description cited here.

The R22 material establishes its two-bladed rotor and belt-driven transmission but does not document an equivalent hydraulic-boost system. Therefore, the defensible comparison is that hydraulic boost is an R44 distinction, not that the R22 and R44 have identical control systems with different pilot technique.

- Rotor layout: fundamentally related in both aircraft.
- Control-force management: hydraulically assisted on the R44 according to its handbook.
- Maintenance scope: the R44 control system includes hydraulic components that must be serviced under R44 instructions.
Why the R44 can feel different even though both have two blades
Blade count is only one part of helicopter handling. The different feel reported by pilots can be understood from documented system differences without assigning an unsupported inertia number to the R44.
Different control feedback
The R44’s hydraulic pump and three servos reduce cyclic and collective feedback forces. A pilot therefore feels a different level of control resistance and feedback than the unboosted arrangement described in the cited R22 material. This is a control-system effect, not evidence that the R44 abandoned the teetering head.
Different drive installation
The R44 routes power through four double V-belts, while the R22 uses two. The larger drive installation, its gearbox-and-mast assembly and its mounting hardware all influence how loads are transmitted through the aircraft. The documentation supports that hardware distinction; it does not support a specific numerical comparison of mast stiffness or rotor inertia.
Different aircraft scale and operating configuration
Robinson lists 131 horsepower for R22 Beta II takeoff and 124 horsepower for cruise on its current R22 product information. The R44 Cadet product information lists a 2,400-hour time between overhauls for its derated configuration. These figures describe different aircraft or operating configurations and should not be treated as rotor-system measurements. They help explain why the R44 requires a more substantial drive and control installation, but they do not prove a particular blade or mast performance value.
Rotor RPM terminology
The R22 handbook’s terminology section uses 510 main-rotor RPM as a reference in the 2024 revision. That number belongs to the R22 handbook context. Do not apply it to the R44 without an R44-specific publication stating the corresponding value.

Can R22 rotor or mast parts be used on an R44?
Do not assume they can. The available documentation supports a shared design family, not interchangeability.
Why the answer is not determined by appearance
- The gearbox-and-mast assemblies have different identifiers: A006 for the R22 and C006 for the R44.
- The R44 maintenance manual identifies a C251 main rotor shaft, while the R22 documentation identifies its own assembly and service data.
- The belt drives differ: two double V-belts on the R22 and four on the R44.
- Gearbox mounts, leveling shims, shaft interfaces and control components are installed and serviced under model-specific procedures.
- Even when a fastener, bearing or accessory appears similar, approval depends on the exact part number, revision and aircraft serial-number effectivity.
What to do before ordering or installing a component
- Record the aircraft model, serial number and component serial number if one is fitted.
- Identify the exact component name and part number from the aircraft records or the applicable illustrated-parts information.
- Check the current R22 or R44 maintenance manual for effectivity, approved substitutions, inspection limits and installation instructions.
- Have an authorized mechanic confirm that the proposed part is approved for that aircraft and configuration.
- Follow the required alignment, shim-recording, torque, belt and operational checks after installation.
If the documentation does not explicitly authorize a substitution, treat the part as non-interchangeable. A generic “R22/R44 compatible” listing is not an airworthiness determination.
Safety implication of the shared teetering head
The R22 handbook explains that mast bumping can occur with a teetering rotor system when excessive flapping results from low-G flight or abrupt control input. The hub can strike the mast, potentially leading to rotor-system separation. This warning is tied to the teetering architecture; it is not evidence that the R44 uses a fundamentally different mast design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For pilots, the correct response is model-specific training and strict compliance with the applicable handbook’s low-G avoidance, rotor-RPM and control-input procedures. For maintainers, the lesson is equally direct: a mast, hub or teeter-stop inspection must follow the approved manual for the aircraft being worked on. Similar-looking hardware does not justify substituting limits or procedures from the other model.
Which manuals should control a maintenance decision?
Use the current Robinson publication for the exact model and serial-number effectivity. The Robinson publications index lists the R22 Maintenance Manual as current in August 2026 and the R44 Maintenance Manual as current in April 2026. Revision status matters because inspection intervals, part applicability, service instructions and approved configurations can change.
- For an R22: use the current R22 Pilot’s Operating Handbook for flight operation and limitations, and the current R22 Maintenance Manual for the A006 gearbox-and-mast installation, belt drive, shims and component procedures.
- For an R44: use the current R44 Pilot’s Operating Handbook for operation and hydraulic-control descriptions, and the current R44 Maintenance Manual for the C006 gearbox-and-mast assembly, C251 shaft, four-belt drive and mounting procedures.
- For either model: verify serial-number applicability, component history, inspection status and any applicable manufacturer instructions before approving a part or repair.
Robinson aircraft are sold and serviced through its authorized dealer and service-center network. When a mast, gearbox, shaft, hub or control component is involved, an authorized maintenance organization is the appropriate source for a definitive compatibility and installation decision.
A practical comparison checklist
Use this checklist when evaluating an R22-versus-R44 rotor question, whether you are a pilot, owner, buyer or maintainer:
- Start with the architecture: confirm that both models use two all-metal main-rotor blades, coning hinges, a teeter hinge and droop stops.
- Separate architecture from hardware: note that the R22 uses two double V-belts and the R44 uses four.
- Identify the assembly: look for the model-specific gearbox-and-mast designation rather than referring to a bare “mast.”
- Check the controls: the R44 has hydraulically boosted main-rotor controls with a gearbox-driven pump and three servos; do not assume the R22 has the same arrangement.
- Verify mounting data: use the correct gearbox mounts, leveling-shim records, bolts, torque values and alignment procedure.
- Use model-specific operating limits: R22 RPM, low-G and autorotation guidance cannot be copied into an R44 checklist, and vice versa.
- Obtain an authorized determination: part-number and serial-number effectivity decide interchangeability, not visual similarity or an online listing.
Bottom line
The R22 and R44 are closely related in concept but not identical in execution. Both use a two-bladed, coning-hinged, teetering main rotor with droop stops. The R22 is explicitly described as having a light, low-inertia rotor system, while the R44 should not be assigned a comparable inertia claim without a model-specific source. The R44’s four-belt drive, C006 gearbox-and-mast assembly, C251 shaft reference, rubber-mounted gearbox and hydraulically boosted controls make its installation distinct. For maintenance, assume no mast or rotor part is interchangeable until the current Robinson manual and an authorized mechanic confirm the exact part and serial-number applicability.
