There is no universal winner. Robinhood is the more natural fit if your priority is a streamlined options workflow, the Robinhood Legend desktop platform, and extended-hours access for eligible securities. Fidelity is usually the stronger fit if you need deeper research, broader investment services, and documented directed or intelligent order-routing controls in Active Trader Pro. The deciding factors are your options contract volume, margin balance, required order types, trading sessions, and whether you also invest in assets beyond stocks, ETFs, and options.
Both advertise $0 online commissions for eligible U.S. stock and ETF trades, but regulatory, exchange, pass-through, and account-related charges can still apply. Fee schedules, margin rates, eligible symbols, and session rules change, so verify them immediately before opening or transferring an account.

Stock and ETF trades
Fidelity’s commission schedule lists $0 online commissions for eligible U.S. stock and ETF trades. Robinhood’s fee disclosure similarly describes stock and ETF trading as commission-free. In both cases, “$0 commission” is narrower than “no cost.” Regulatory assessments, exchange fees, and other pass-through charges may be collected on particular transactions. Read the current schedule for the security, venue, and account type you will use.

Options contracts
For a standard Fidelity account, the online options fee listed in the current schedule is $0.65 per contract. Robinhood’s options page says it charges no commission or contract fee for stock and ETF options, while its disclosures still identify regulatory and pass-through fees. If you trade many contracts, that difference can dominate the headline stock commission comparison.
Use a simple, clearly labeled example rather than assuming every order is identical: 100 Fidelity option contracts at $0.65 per contract would produce $65 in online contract charges before any other applicable fees. That is a hypothetical calculation, not a forecast of your total bill. On Robinhood, a zero contract-fee line does not eliminate pass-through or regulatory charges, and the amount can vary by transaction.
Margin interest
Margin is a borrowing decision, so compare the rate that applies to your expected debit balance and holding period. Fidelity publishes rate tiers and identified a base margin rate effective September 18, 2026; the actual percentage and tier should be read from the live commission and margin page before you trade. Robinhood markets lower margin rates and an interest-free first $1,000 of margin, but eligibility, subscription conditions, and the applicable balance rules matter. A promotional or tiered rate is not a timeless rate for every customer.

For your own estimate, multiply the balance in each rate tier by that tier’s annual rate and by the number of days borrowed, then divide by 365. Ask each broker whether the quoted rate requires a paid service, minimum balance, or other enrollment condition. Also account for the possibility that rates change while a position remains open.

How the active-trading workflow differs
Fidelity: research plus order control
Fidelity’s online-trading materials position the service around research and advanced trading capabilities. Its Active Trader Pro FAQ documents both direct (directed) and intelligent order-routing choices. The directed trade ticket supports equity extended-hours and across-session trading, giving an experienced trader a way to specify routing preferences rather than relying only on a default workflow.
That control is useful when your strategy depends on venue selection, order handling, or a specific session. It also adds decisions that a simple market-order workflow does not require. Before committing, confirm which order types, routing destinations, quotes, and extended-hours controls are enabled for your account and for the security you intend to trade.
Robinhood: streamlined trading and Legend
Robinhood promotes Robinhood Legend as its desktop trading experience and highlights an options interface designed for rapid navigation. Its options materials describe the platform’s options-trading access and workflow. This can suit an investor who wants a focused interface with fewer separate research and routing decisions.

Trading sessions: premarket, after-hours, and overnight access
Robinhood’s eligible-symbol sessions
Robinhood advertises extended-hours trading for hundreds of popular stocks and ETFs and a 24 Hour Market for eligible symbols. Robinhood Markets’ 2026 proxy statement reported more than 1,000 symbols available in the 24 Hour Market as of March 31, 2026 (proxy statement). That is a dated company statistic, not a guarantee that the same count remains available.
“24 Hour Market” does not mean every listed security trades continuously. Access is limited to eligible symbols and defined sessions, with its own order rules, liquidity conditions, and potential spread differences. Review the current eligible-symbol list, session timetable, and restrictions before relying on overnight execution.
Fidelity’s extended-hours tools
Fidelity’s Active Trader Pro directed ticket documents support for equity extended-hours and across-session trading. The relevant question is not simply whether a broker offers after-hours access, but whether the session, order type, duration, routing, and quote information match your method. Confirm those details in the current platform and account documentation.
Investment breadth beyond frequent stock and options trades
Active trading may be your immediate goal, but many investors want one brokerage for a long-term portfolio as well. Fidelity presents a wider investment-service and research context in its official trading materials. A current third-party comparison from StockBrokers.com reports that Robinhood did not offer bonds or mutual funds in the lineup it reviewed; because product menus can change, verify availability directly with both brokers before treating that as a current categorical limit (comparison).

Make an inventory of the assets you actually hold or may add: individual stocks, ETFs, listed options, bonds, mutual funds, cash-management features, and any other instruments relevant to your plan. A low trading fee is less valuable if you must maintain a second account for an asset your chosen broker does not support. Conversely, paying for a broader service you will never use may add complexity without improving your results.
Which costs matter for your trading pattern?
Low-volume stock trader
If you make occasional online trades in eligible U.S. stocks and ETFs, the advertised commission difference is unlikely to decide the choice because both list $0 commissions. Compare execution controls, research, account services, and the sessions you will use. Review the confirmation and fee schedule for regulatory or exchange charges instead of assuming every order settles at exactly zero cost.
High-volume options trader
Count contracts, not just orders. Fidelity’s $0.65 per-contract charge can become material when a strategy opens and closes many contracts. Robinhood’s stated absence of commission and contract fees may reduce that particular line item, but pass-through and regulatory charges remain possible. Build a monthly estimate from your expected contracts, number of legs, opening and closing activity, and the current schedules.

Write down the debit balance you expect to carry, the longest likely holding period, and whether you would qualify for any subscription or promotional condition. Compare the resulting annualized interest under each broker’s current tier. A lower advertised starting rate can be more expensive for a balance that falls outside the qualifying tier, while a first-$1,000 allowance may have little effect on a much larger debit.

Order execution and risk controls to check before opening an account
Use this checklist during each broker’s account-opening or platform demonstration process:
- Order types: Confirm that the platform supports the limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing, conditional, and options orders your strategy requires. Do not infer availability from a marketing screenshot.
- Session rules: Identify the exact premarket, regular, after-hours, and overnight windows for your security. Check whether orders must be limit orders, how they expire, and whether the same order can span sessions.
- Routing: If venue selection matters, determine whether you can direct an order, use intelligent routing, or only submit through a default route. Fidelity documents both directed and intelligent choices in Active Trader Pro; confirm current access for your account.
- Quotes and data: Establish which real-time or delayed quotes are included, especially during thinly traded extended sessions. A displayed price may not represent a dependable execution price when liquidity is limited.
- Options permissions: Verify the approval level, spread and multi-leg support, exercise and assignment handling, and buying-power calculation for your account.
- Margin safeguards: Read maintenance requirements, liquidation rights, interest calculation, and rate-change terms. A broker can change requirements or close positions when account equity falls below maintenance levels.
- Statements and tax records: Confirm that trade confirmations, cost basis, and year-end reporting provide the detail you need to reconcile frequent activity.
A practical decision framework
Choose Robinhood when these conditions fit
- Your primary activity is stocks, ETFs, and listed options rather than a broad multi-asset portfolio.
- You place enough options contracts that Fidelity’s per-contract charge would be a significant recurring cost.
- You prefer a focused options interface and want to use Robinhood Legend on desktop.
- You value eligible extended-hours or 24 Hour Market access and understand that symbols and sessions are limited.
- Your margin decision is based on the current rate and eligibility terms for your balance, not on a general “lower rates” headline.
Choose Fidelity when these conditions fit
- You want a broader research and investment-service environment alongside active trading.
- You need documented directed or intelligent routing choices and the controls available in Active Trader Pro.
- You may add bonds, mutual funds, or other long-term holdings and prefer to investigate one brokerage for those needs.
- You trade enough stock and ETF volume that research, execution controls, and account breadth matter more than a difference in headline commissions.
- You are willing to pay the stated $0.65 per contract for standard online options accounts in exchange for the platform and service mix you require.
Use both only for a defined reason
Maintaining two accounts can separate an options or extended-hours workflow from long-term holdings, but it also creates duplicate records, transfers, buying-power decisions, and tax reporting. Do it only when a specific capability or asset unavailable in one account justifies the added administration. Keep a written rule for which account holds each position and how you will monitor total margin exposure across accounts.
Pitfalls that make a “cheaper” broker expensive
Confusing a commission with total trading cost
Zero commission does not remove spreads, market impact, regulatory assessments, exchange charges, or margin interest. Compare the complete confirmation and current disclosures for the order types and sessions you actually use.
Assuming overnight liquidity equals regular-session liquidity
Eligible overnight symbols may have wider spreads and fewer available counterparties. Use limit orders where appropriate, size positions conservatively, and verify the session’s cancellation and expiration behavior.
Using an introductory margin rate as a permanent quote
Margin rates are balance-dependent and can change. Record the rate tier, effective date, eligibility condition, and calculation method at the time you borrow, then recheck them before extending the position.
Choosing on interface appearance alone
A clean interface can hide missing order controls, limited asset access, or insufficient research. Test the complete workflow with a small, low-risk order only after confirming permissions and costs; do not mistake ease of navigation for evidence of better execution or returns.
How to make the final choice
- List your activity: Estimate monthly stock and ETF trades, option contracts and legs, average margin debit, and the sessions in which you trade.
- List your assets: Include current and likely future holdings such as bonds or mutual funds, not only the securities you trade today.
- Price your real pattern: Apply the current stock, ETF, options, regulatory, pass-through, and margin terms to those estimates. Keep each assumption—contract count, balance, days borrowed, and eligibility—visible.
- Match controls: Confirm order types, routing, quote data, options permissions, and session rules in the actual platform documentation.
- Check volatility: Revisit fee pages, margin terms, and eligible-symbol lists immediately before account opening or transfer because the figures and product menus can change.
- Prioritize risk management: Select the platform that lets you execute and monitor your strategy reliably; do not select it because a feature list suggests higher returns.
For an options-focused trader who values a streamlined interface and eligible overnight access, Robinhood can be the better operational fit after checking current fees and symbols. For an investor who combines active trading with research, broader investment services, and explicit routing controls, Fidelity can be the better fit despite its per-contract options charge. Margin users should make the decision from the live rate tier and eligibility terms at their own balance. Reassess the choice whenever your trading pattern, asset needs, or the brokers’ schedules change.
