Roadside assistance is the broader help or coverage arrangement; towing is one specific service it may provide. Roadside assistance can dispatch help for problems such as a dead battery, flat tire, lockout, or fuel shortage, and may arrange a tow if the car cannot be made safe to drive. Towing transports the vehicle to a destination allowed by the plan or policy. Whether a tow is included—and how far it can go—depends on the membership, insurance policy, and location.

The practical question is not only whether you have roadside assistance, but what your particular benefit will do in this situation. It may send an on-site service, arrange a tow, or leave some costs for you to pay. Check the terms and confirm the destination, mileage, and payment arrangement before the vehicle is moved.

Roadside assistance and towing are not the same thing

Roadside assistance describes a service arrangement: a provider sends or coordinates help when a vehicle has a problem. The response might be an on-site service, such as help with a flat tire or dead battery, or transportation by tow truck if the vehicle cannot be driven safely. AAA Club Alliance lists battery service, tire changes, fuel delivery, locksmith help, extrication, and towing among its roadside services. AAA Club Alliance’s roadside assistance information also illustrates that some membership benefits may apply when a member is driving or riding as a passenger, subject to exclusions.

Towing is the transportation service itself. A tow truck moves a vehicle that cannot be started or safely driven to a destination permitted by the applicable terms. A roadside plan may include towing, but the words are not interchangeable: a plan can offer roadside help without every call resulting in a tow, and towing may be covered through a membership, an insurance feature, or a separate payment.

In other words, roadside assistance is the umbrella; towing is one possible response under it. A provider might first send help intended to address the problem at the vehicle. If that does not restore safe operation—or if the vehicle is not safe to drive—the next step may be a tow. The service available depends on the specific plan and circumstances, not just the name of the benefit.

Question Roadside assistance Towing
What is it? A service or coverage arrangement for vehicle problems. A service that transports a vehicle.
What might happen? Help may be sent for a battery, tire, lockout, fuel, extrication, or tow issue; the included services depend on the plan. A tow provider moves the vehicle to a destination allowed by the coverage or agreed with the provider.
When is it relevant? When you need help with a vehicle problem and want to find out what assistance is available. When the vehicle cannot be started or safely driven, or on-site help cannot restore safe operation.
What determines payment and limits? The membership or policy terms, eligibility rules, location, and service-call limits. The applicable tow-distance and destination rules, excess-mile charges, and coverage terms.

The distinction matters when you call for help. Asking for roadside assistance does not by itself establish that your particular tow, destination, or extra mileage will be covered. Before authorizing service, confirm what the provider will dispatch and what you may owe.

When should you request a tow?

Request towing when the car will not start, cannot be driven safely, has damage that makes driving unsafe, or cannot be returned to safe operation through an on-site service. AAA Auto Club South describes towing as the response when a vehicle cannot be started or safely driven. Its terms also make clear that the membership level affects the distance and destination available. Read the club’s Emergency Road Service Towing Services terms.

  • The engine will not start: If the roadside response cannot get the vehicle running, ask whether a tow is covered and where it can take the car.
  • The vehicle cannot be driven safely: Do not continue driving just to reach a preferred shop or a closer destination. Tell the dispatcher what makes the car unsafe and request guidance about a tow.
  • A tire, battery, or other problem may be fixable on-site: Roadside assistance may be able to send a service other than a tow. Ask what service is available under your plan rather than assuming a tow is the only option.
  • The vehicle needs extrication: Some plans list extrication among available roadside services, but whether it applies in a particular situation depends on the provider’s terms and dispatch assessment.

A simple decision path is to describe the problem and ask what eligible service can address it. If an on-site response can restore safe operation, a tow may not be necessary. If the vehicle still cannot be started or safely driven, request a tow and verify its mileage and destination limits. Do not treat coverage limits as a reason to drive a vehicle that is unsafe.

If there has been a collision, attend to immediate safety and emergency needs first. Then check the insurance and roadside terms that apply to the incident. Collision-related towing and towing after an ordinary breakdown may be treated differently; do not assume that one coverage automatically pays for the other.

Does roadside assistance include towing?

It may. Towing is commonly one possible roadside response, but whether it is included, how many calls are allowed, how far the vehicle can be taken, and what happens if you exceed that distance all depend on the specific membership or policy. “Roadside assistance” is not a promise of unlimited towing or a tow to any destination.

One concrete example is AAA Auto Club South’s published benefit information, accessed in 2026. These are limits listed by that club for the named membership levels—not a rule for every AAA club, insurer, or roadside plan:

AAA Auto Club South level Published towing allowance What to note
Classic Up to 5 miles Excess distance is charged at the locally prevailing rate.
Plus Up to 100 miles Excess distance is charged at the locally prevailing rate.
Premier One tow up to 200 miles; remaining tows up to 100 miles Excess distance is charged at the locally prevailing rate.

The same Auto Club South terms say payment for excess distance may be made directly to the service provider. Check the current local terms before relying on these example limits, and ask who collects any amount that is not covered. A destination beyond the included distance can create an out-of-pocket charge even when the tow itself is an eligible service.

Pay attention to how a plan describes the allowance: it may distinguish one longer tow from the remaining tows, as the Premier example does. Ask whether the limit applies to each tow, which destination qualifies, and how the provider calculates an overage. “A tow is covered” answers only part of the cost question; the permitted distance and any locally prevailing excess-mile rate matter too.

Does car insurance cover towing?

It depends on the policy and the reason for the tow. AAA Insurance explains that routine breakdown towing is typically an optional feature rather than part of standard liability or collision coverage. Its overview distinguishes a roadside assistance dispatch from towing-and-labor reimbursement, so check whether your policy arranges service, reimburses an eligible expense, or provides a different benefit. AAA Insurance’s towing coverage explainer is one insurer’s overview, not a substitute for your policy documents.

USAA separately distinguishes a breakdown tow from a tow related to a collision. The coverage available can depend on the policy and circumstances; without applicable coverage, the driver may be responsible for the charge. See USAA’s roadside assistance information and verify the terms of your own policy. Insurance contract wording and forms can vary by carrier and jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing between a membership and an insurance add-on, compare what each actually does. A membership may arrange service directly, while a policy feature may have dispatch or reimbursement terms. Do not assume a benefit is free simply because a provider dispatches help, or that an insurance policy covers a tow merely because it includes collision coverage.

Also distinguish routine breakdown help from a collision-related tow when asking an insurer about coverage. The same vehicle may be towed in either situation, but the reason for the tow can affect which provision applies. If you are unsure, describe what happened accurately and ask which benefit applies; consult the policy wording rather than assuming that roadside assistance and collision coverage are interchangeable.

How to check your coverage before a breakdown

  1. Find the document that controls the benefit. For a membership, check the current club terms for your location and level. For insurance, look at the policy declarations and endorsements, then the relevant coverage wording. A general product page may not show every condition that applies to your account.
  2. Confirm eligible services. Check whether the benefit lists towing, battery service, tire changes, fuel delivery, locksmith help, and extrication. A service appearing in a provider’s general description does not establish that it is available under every plan or in every circumstance.
  3. Check call limits and activation rules. Find the number of service calls allowed during the membership or policy period, whether there is a waiting period, and whether a service needed before joining counts as covered. AAA’s membership FAQ says club benefits vary and that a service needed before joining is not covered among later allowable calls. Review the AAA membership FAQ; do not assume joining during an active breakdown will cover that call.
  4. Read the tow-distance and destination rules. Confirm the included distance, whether the benefit applies per tow or by another measure, where the vehicle can be taken, and what rate applies to excess miles.
  5. Ask who and what are covered. Some membership benefits may follow the member rather than a single listed vehicle, while other arrangements may be tied to a vehicle or policy. Check whether passengers, borrowed vehicles, or other situations are included and note exclusions.
  6. Understand dispatch versus reimbursement. Determine whether the provider arranges and pays for an eligible service directly or whether you must pay first and submit a claim. Ask what records or receipts are needed if reimbursement is part of the benefit.
  7. Check collision terms separately. Look for wording about collision-related towing as well as ordinary breakdown roadside help. If the situation is unclear, ask your insurer which coverage applies before authorizing a service when it is safe and practical to do so.

These checks are useful because the apparent headline benefit can leave practical questions unanswered. A plan may list towing but still cap distance, limit service calls, specify who qualifies, or require you to pay the provider for an uncovered portion. The details to compare are the benefit’s scope and limits, not simply whether the word “towing” appears.

What to ask when you call for a tow

Once you have reported the problem, clarify the service and cost before dispatch where possible. The answers help distinguish an included roadside benefit from a tow or distance charge you may have to pay yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is a tow the right response, or can the provider send another eligible roadside service?
  • Does my membership or policy cover this particular call and this vehicle or member?
  • What destination is covered, and how many miles are included for this tow?
  • What is the charge for any excess distance, and will I pay the service provider directly?
  • Is this being dispatched through my benefit, or should I expect to pay and seek reimbursement?
  • Does the incident’s connection to a collision change which coverage applies?

Give the dispatcher an accurate description of the vehicle’s condition and location. Do not describe a vehicle as drivable merely to avoid a tow if it is unsafe. If coverage is uncertain, ask the provider to explain any charge you would authorize before service begins.

If you are comparing destinations, verify that the plan permits the one you want rather than assuming the tow can go to any shop or address. If only part of the distance is covered, ask for the excess amount and who will collect it. For reimbursement-based coverage, ask whether you need to arrange the tow yourself and what documentation the insurer requires; do not presume direct payment or reimbursement without checking.

Why roadside benefits are hard to generalize

Roadside assistance is not a single standardized product. AAA is made up of clubs, and the examples above demonstrate that published tow limits differ by club and membership level. Insurance coverage also depends on the carrier, policy, and jurisdiction. The cited materials do not establish a universal price, response time, mileage allowance, or rule that applies across the United States.

Some memberships can cover a person whether driving or riding as a passenger, subject to exclusions, as AAA Club Alliance describes. That does not mean every membership or insurance policy follows a person in the same way. Establish whether the benefit attaches to a person, a vehicle, or both before relying on it, especially when driving a borrowed or different vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a listed service does not answer every eligibility question. An individual plan may impose call limits, exclusions, activation rules, destination restrictions, or a separate payment obligation. For a real breakdown, the terms for your location and plan—not a different club’s example—determine the benefit.

There is no single price or mileage rule that can be applied to every driver from these examples. The AAA Auto Club South figures are a club-specific illustration, and the AAA Club Alliance person-based example is also subject to its own exclusions. Verify the current terms that govern your membership or policy rather than using another provider’s benefit as a promise of coverage.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between roadside assistance and towing?

Roadside assistance is the broader service or coverage arrangement for vehicle problems. It may dispatch help for a battery, tire, lockout, fuel shortage, extrication, or tow. Towing is the specific service of transporting a vehicle that cannot be started or safely driven.

Does roadside assistance include towing?

It may, but the inclusion, call allowance, distance, destination, and excess-mile charge depend on the plan or policy. Confirm those terms before the tow rather than assuming the whole trip is covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When do I need a tow truck?

Consider a tow when the vehicle will not start, cannot be driven safely, has damage that makes driving unsafe, or an on-site service cannot restore safe operation. Do not keep driving an unsafe vehicle to reach a preferred destination.

Does car insurance cover towing?

Routine breakdown towing is typically an optional feature, rather than part of standard liability or collision coverage, according to AAA Insurance’s overview. A collision-related tow may be handled differently from a breakdown tow. Check your own policy and ask whether the benefit dispatches service or reimburses an eligible expense.

Will roadside assistance cover a tow to any destination?

Not necessarily. A plan can limit the included mileage or restrict the destination, and extra distance may be charged at a locally prevailing rate. Check the applicable terms and ask the provider what you would pay beyond the covered amount.

Can I join a roadside plan during a breakdown and use it immediately?

Do not assume so. AAA’s membership FAQ says a service needed before joining is not covered among later allowable calls. Activation rules and benefits vary, so check the membership terms rather than relying on a new enrollment to cover an active service need.
