ROAD should not be judged from its share price alone. Construction Partners combines a substantial equity value with significant debt, rapid reported growth, acquisitions and a large infrastructure backlog. A useful valuation therefore triangulates trailing and forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, EV/revenue, price/sales and price/book, then tests those multiples against organic growth, margins, backlog conversion, leverage and dilution.
The latest market-data snapshot available for this article showed ROAD at approximately $87.29 a share, with a $5.31 billion market capitalization and $7.11 billion enterprise value. That combination produced roughly a 36.68 trailing P/E, 24.51 forward P/E, 1.51 price/sales, 5.10 price/book, 2.04 EV/revenue and 15.01 EV/EBITDA. These are moving market snapshots, not permanent company characteristics.
ROAD valuation snapshot
The following figures are approximately as reported in a crawled Yahoo Finance market-data table. They can change during the trading day as the share price moves and as analyst estimates are revised.
| Measure | Approximate ROAD figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Share price | $87.29 | Price of one common share at the snapshot |
| Market capitalization | $5.31 billion | Equity value of the outstanding shares |
| Enterprise value | $7.11 billion | Equity value adjusted for debt, cash and other balance-sheet items |
| Trailing P/E | 36.68 | Share price relative to reported past earnings |
| Forward P/E | 24.51 | Share price relative to consensus expected earnings |
| Price/sales | 1.51 | Equity value relative to revenue |
| Price/book | 5.10 | Equity value relative to accounting equity |
| EV/revenue | 2.04 | Total operating-business value relative to revenue |
| EV/EBITDA | 15.01 | Total operating-business value relative to EBITDA |
The gap between the $5.31 billion market capitalization and $7.11 billion enterprise value is not an error. Enterprise value incorporates financing obligations and subtracts cash, so a company with meaningful net debt can have an enterprise value well above its equity value.

What each valuation metric tells you
Trailing and forward P/E
Price-to-earnings, or P/E, answers a simple question: how much are investors paying for one dollar of earnings? Trailing P/E uses the most recently reported earnings, while forward P/E uses an estimate of future earnings.
ROAD’s approximately 36.68 trailing P/E says the market was paying nearly $37 for each dollar of recent earnings. The approximately 24.51 forward P/E is lower because analysts expected earnings to grow. That spread can indicate genuine growth, but it can also reflect optimistic estimates. If earnings fail to reach consensus, the apparent forward discount disappears.
Construction companies can show noisy annual earnings because weather, project timing, material costs, acquisitions and contract adjustments affect individual periods. Read P/E alongside operating margin and cash flow rather than treating a single annual denominator as normalized profitability. Also check whether the earnings figure is GAAP diluted EPS or an adjusted figure that excludes selected costs.

Enterprise value is commonly approximated as market capitalization plus total debt and other debt-like claims, minus cash and cash equivalents. EV/EBITDA compares that operating-business value with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.
EV-based measures are useful when companies use different amounts of debt or hold different cash balances. Interest expense affects net income and therefore P/E, but it does not affect EBITDA. Two contractors with similar roads, plants and margins can have very different P/Es if one borrowed more to fund acquisitions. EV/EBITDA helps put their operating values on a more comparable footing.
EBITDA is not free cash flow. Construction businesses still have to fund equipment, working capital, taxes, interest and acquisitions. A 15.01 EV/EBITDA multiple is therefore a starting point, not proof that the shares are cheap or expensive. Confirm how EBITDA is defined, especially when a peer reports “adjusted EBITDA” with different exclusions.

EV/revenue
EV/revenue is helpful when margins vary widely or when earnings are temporarily depressed. ROAD’s approximately 2.04 EV/revenue means the total value assigned by the market was about twice the relevant revenue base in the snapshot.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Revenue multiples are margin-agnostic: they do not distinguish a contractor converting sales into high operating profit from one earning very little on each dollar. Use EV/revenue with gross margin, operating margin and cash conversion. A higher multiple can be justified by superior, durable margins, but revenue growth acquired with low returns may destroy value.
Price/sales
Price/sales uses equity value rather than enterprise value. ROAD’s approximately 1.51 price/sales is lower than its EV/revenue because debt and cash change the numerator. It is a useful cross-check for companies with changing earnings, but it is especially sensitive to leverage: borrowing can make price/sales look modest while leaving shareholders exposed to substantial financial risk.
Price/book
Price/book compares the share price with accounting book value. ROAD’s approximately 5.10 price/book indicates that the market valued the equity at about five times reported book value in the snapshot.
Book value matters more for capital-intensive businesses and for checking whether acquisitions have created a large goodwill balance. It is not a replacement for an operating valuation: acquired goodwill, asset revaluations and depreciation policy can make book equity diverge from the economic value of roads, equipment, contracts and customer relationships. A high price/book can be rational when returns on equity and invested capital are sustainably high; it is a warning sign when those returns are weak or falling.
ROAD’s fundamental base
Construction Partners reported fiscal-2025 revenue of $2.812 billion, gross profit of $439.1 million, operating income of $224.8 million, net income of $101.8 million and diluted EPS of $1.84. Fiscal-2024 revenue was $1.824 billion, so year-over-year comparisons span a materially larger operating base.

| Fiscal-2025 item | Reported amount | Derived context |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $2.812 billion | 100% of the reported sales base |
| Gross profit | $439.1 million | Approximately 15.6% gross margin |
| Operating income | $224.8 million | Approximately 8.0% operating margin |
| Net income | $101.8 million | Approximately 3.6% net margin |
| Diluted EPS | $1.84 | Per-share GAAP earnings measure reported for the fiscal year |
Those margins explain why a revenue multiple alone is inadequate. Small changes in project costs, equipment utilization or overhead can have an outsized effect on operating and net income. The difference between operating income and net income also reflects interest, taxes and other items that equity investors ultimately bear.
Why ROAD’s enterprise value exceeds its market cap
The September 30, 2025 balance sheet listed $156.1 million of cash, $1.574 billion of long-term debt and $38.5 million of current maturities. Stockholders’ equity was $912.0 million.
Adding long-term debt and current maturities and subtracting cash gives an approximate net-debt figure of $1.456 billion, before considering any other enterprise-value adjustments. That financing burden helps explain why enterprise value was about $1.8 billion higher than market capitalization in the market snapshot.

This distinction matters in three practical ways:
- Interest sensitivity: Higher rates or refinancing costs can reduce net income even if project revenue is unchanged.
- Acquisition capacity: Debt can accelerate expansion, but additional borrowing increases the downside if acquired operations underperform.
- Shareholder dilution: Future acquisitions or capital raises funded with stock can increase the share count and reduce each existing share’s claim on earnings.
Track net debt over time instead of relying on one balance-sheet date. A falling EV/EBITDA multiple caused only by rising debt is not the same as a multiple falling because operating earnings grew.
Does backlog justify a premium multiple?
Construction Partners reported a record project backlog of $3.36 billion at June 30, 2026 and raised its fiscal-2026 outlook. Compared with fiscal-2025 revenue of $2.812 billion, the backlog is approximately 1.20 times that prior-year revenue base. The periods are different, so this is an orientation measure rather than a forecast of next year’s sales.
Backlog represents contracted work expected in the future; it is not guaranteed profit or cash flow. Before assigning a premium valuation, examine:

- Conversion speed: How much backlog is expected to become revenue in the next four quarters, and how much extends beyond that?
- Contract economics: What gross and operating margins are embedded in the work?
- Price exposure: Can the company pass through asphalt, fuel, labor and equipment-cost inflation?
- Execution terms: Fixed-price and unit-price projects can produce margin risk when quantities, schedules or change orders differ from estimates.
- Funding quality: Public infrastructure work depends on state and municipal budgets, grants and other funding decisions.
- Concentration: Is the backlog diversified by customer, geography, project type and award timing?
A large backlog supports visibility, but only conversion at acceptable margins turns visibility into value. A backlog that grows through low-return contracts can increase revenue while reducing the quality of earnings.
Separate organic growth from acquisition growth
For the quarter ended March 31, 2026, Construction Partners reported 35% year-over-year growth in both revenue and adjusted EBITDA, including 11% organic revenue growth. The company’s May 8, 2026 fiscal-2026 second-quarter release described the result as “Strong financial performance in the quarter led to 35 percent growth in both revenue and Adjusted EBITDA, including 11 percent organic revenue growth.”
The distinction is central to valuation. Organic growth shows expansion in existing markets and operations. Acquisition-led growth can be valuable, but it adds integration work, goodwill, purchase accounting, financing needs and the possibility that expected synergies do not arrive.
When evaluating a premium multiple, decompose reported growth into:
- Same-market or same-business organic revenue growth.
- Revenue contributed by acquired companies during the period.
- Changes in pricing, project mix and pass-through costs.
- Incremental EBITDA after integration and corporate costs.
- Additional interest expense, shares issued and capital spending.
Growth deserves a higher multiple only when it is repeatable and produces attractive incremental returns after all of those costs.
A practical ROAD valuation workflow
1. Start with the current capital structure
Record market capitalization, cash, current maturities, long-term debt and diluted shares from the same reporting period. Reconcile the result to enterprise value rather than assuming market cap represents the whole business.

2. Use both trailing and forward earnings
Compare the approximately 36.68 trailing P/E with the approximately 24.51 forward P/E, then identify the earnings growth required for the forward figure to be achieved. Check the estimate date and whether analysts use GAAP or adjusted EPS.
3. Cross-check with EV multiples
Use the approximately 15.01 EV/EBITDA and 2.04 EV/revenue figures to test whether the conclusion changes after debt is included. Investigate any unusual difference between reported EBITDA and cash generated from operations.
4. Test profitability quality
Review gross margin, operating margin, return on invested capital and free-cash-flow conversion over several periods. Look for improvement that persists after acquisitions are fully included, not just a single favorable quarter.
5. Reconcile backlog with capacity
Map the $3.36 billion backlog to expected quarterly revenue, available crews and equipment, contract margins and public funding. Ask whether growth can be delivered without disproportionate working capital or leverage.
6. Stress the downside
Model slower organic growth, a margin decline from cost inflation, delayed project starts, weaker change-order recovery, higher interest expense and additional share issuance. A valuation that works only under the central case is not robust.
How to compare ROAD with infrastructure peers
A peer comparison is useful only when definitions and fiscal periods match. The available figures do not establish a complete peer-consensus table, so no single peer ranking can be stated here. Build the comparison with the following fields:
| Peer metric | ROAD input to collect | Why it matters | Peer value in available data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward P/E | ROAD’s approximately 24.51 snapshot figure; verify estimate date | Compares equity value with expected earnings | Not stated |
| EV/EBITDA | Approximately 15.01 | Controls partly for leverage differences | Not stated |
| EV/revenue | Approximately 2.04 | Useful when margins differ or earnings are volatile | Not stated |
| Organic revenue growth | 11% in the quarter ended March 31, 2026 | Separates underlying expansion from acquisitions | Not stated |
| Adjusted EBITDA margin | Calculate from consistently defined adjusted EBITDA and revenue | Tests whether growth creates operating profit | Not stated |
| Net debt/EBITDA | Use debt, cash and the same EBITDA definition | Measures balance-sheet risk | Not stated |
| Backlog/revenue | Approximately 1.20 times fiscal-2025 revenue, with mismatched dates | Indicates contracted-work visibility | Not stated |
| Return on invested capital | Calculate using consistent invested-capital and operating-profit definitions | Tests whether expansion earns more than its capital cost | Not stated |
| Free-cash-flow conversion | Compare free cash flow with net income or EBITDA | Shows how much accounting profit becomes usable cash | Not stated |
Keep fiscal-year definitions consistent and flag whether each company’s EBITDA is adjusted differently. A peer appearing cheaper on P/E may simply have lower leverage, a different earnings cycle or more conservative accounting.

When could ROAD be overvalued?
A premium valuation becomes vulnerable if forward earnings estimates fall, organic growth slows materially, project margins contract, backlog converts slowly or debt rises faster than EBITDA. Acquisition goodwill can increase while economic returns deteriorate. Fixed-price execution problems, delayed public funding and unfavorable change orders can all reduce the earnings supporting today’s multiple.
Conversely, a premium can be defensible if organic growth remains strong, backlog converts on attractive margins, acquisitions earn high returns, leverage declines and free cash flow catches up with reported earnings. The key question is not whether one multiple looks high; it is whether future cash earnings and returns justify the price paid for them.
Quick Recap
What to refresh before making an investment decision
- Replace the approximate share-price multiples with a live quote and current diluted share count.
- Update forward EPS and EBITDA estimates to the latest consensus date.
- Read the newest balance sheet for debt, cash, current maturities and acquisition-related obligations.
- Recalculate backlog/revenue using comparable dates and distinguish awarded work from funded work.
- Separate organic growth from acquired revenue and review post-acquisition margins.
- Compare free cash flow, capital spending and working-capital needs with net income.
- Run downside cases for inflation, delays, funding changes, interest rates and dilution.
