On a dedicated RLCraft server, “enabling cheats” means granting a player operator (OP) or another permission node. The server owner should run /op <player> from the server console, or ask an existing operator to do it; the player then reconnects. There is no single-player-style Allow Cheats switch that an ordinary multiplayer player can use to grant themselves access.
This guide targets RLCraft 2.9.3 on Minecraft Java 1.12.2. It also explains the separate enable-command-block=true setting, the older RLCraft plugin commands documented online, and the differences between a dedicated server and a single-player world opened to LAN.
What “cheats” mean in RLCraft 2.9.3
RLCraft is a heavily configured Minecraft Java modpack. The official RLCraft description characterizes it as approximately 185 mods, or 186 when OptiFine is included. The current target for this guide is pack version 2.9.3 running on Minecraft Java 1.12.2. Because commands and permission nodes can change with the pack, Forge, or an installed server-side plugin, do not assume that a command documented for another release exists on your server.
On a dedicated server, command access is controlled by the Minecraft operator system and any permission plugin installed by the server owner. The practical sequence is:

- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
- Stop treating “cheats” as a world toggle; identify the player who needs access.
- From the server console, run
/op <player>, replacing the placeholder with the exact Minecraft username. - Have that player disconnect and reconnect so the new permission state is loaded.
- Test a low-risk command, then grant narrower plugin permissions instead of permanent OP status where your permission system supports it.
Java’s /gamerule command requires permission level 2. A player who is not an operator, or who has a permission setup below that level, can therefore receive a “you do not have permission” response even though the command itself is valid.
How to enable admin commands on a dedicated server
1. Confirm that you are the server owner or an existing operator
Only the console, the server owner, or a player who already has sufficient operator authority can grant OP status. A regular player cannot type a command in chat to promote themselves. If you rent server space, the exact console location and permission controls depend on the host’s panel; those interface steps are host-dependent rather than part of RLCraft itself.
2. Grant OP from the console
- Open the live server console, not the Minecraft chat window. The console may be a terminal window or a web panel supplied by your host.
- Enter
/op <player>with the player’s exact username. For example,/op Alex. - Wait for the console confirmation that the player has been made an operator.
- Ask the player to leave and rejoin the server. Reconnecting avoids testing with a stale permission state.
If an existing operator is performing the action in game, the same command can be entered in chat. The console route is preferable for initial setup because it remains available when no operator can join the world.
3. Test access without changing the world
After reconnecting, test a command that reports information rather than changing terrain or player data. If you need to alter a rule, make a world backup first. Once OP is active, commands such as /gamerule <rule> [value] should be available at the required Java permission level.
4. Remove OP when the administrative task is finished
OP is broad access. When a temporary repair or moderation task is complete, run /deop <player> from the console and have the user reconnect. Keep permanent OP limited to people you trust with the entire server, not just one particular command.
OP status versus individual permission nodes
There are two different control layers:
- Vanilla operator access: Minecraft’s operator level controls commands such as
/gamerule. Java permission level 2 is the relevant threshold for that command. - Plugin permissions: A permissions manager can grant a node for one RLCraft-related command without making a player a full operator. The exact syntax and panel depend on the permission plugin installed on your server.
If a server uses a permission plugin, ask its administrator which group or node should be assigned. Do not combine a plugin node with an assumption that the command is built into the current pack; the documented RLCraft command set below comes from an older plugin reference.

Enable command blocks separately in server.properties
Command-block execution is not the same thing as giving a player permission to type commands. The server property controls whether command blocks can execute at all; OP controls which players can issue elevated commands.
“Server owners be aware that enable-command-block=true must be set in your server.properties file or certain structures will not generate correctly and be missing villagers!” — CurseForge RLCraft project listing
Set the property safely
- Stop the server before editing its configuration files.
- Open the
server.propertiesfile in the server’s main directory. - Find the
enable-command-blockline. Set it exactly toenable-command-block=true. If the line is absent, add it as a new property. - Save the file and start the server again.
- Check a newly generated or affected structure in a test copy of the world before changing a live build.
This setting permits command-block execution; it does not make every player an operator and does not bypass a player’s permission level. Conversely, giving yourself OP will not turn command blocks on if the property is false.
Documented RLCraft-specific commands
The following commands and permission nodes are documented in an older RLCraft 1.2-era plugin reference. They are not guaranteed features of every RLCraft 2.9.3 server. A command can be absent because the plugin is not installed, the server uses a different build, or the command name changed. Verify with in-game tab completion and the server’s installed-mod or plugin list before relying on any of them.
| Command | Purpose | Documented permission | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
/rlcraft give <player> <item> |
Gives a specified item to a player. | rlcraft.command.give |
Item identifiers and accepted arguments depend on the installed command implementation. |
/rlcraft thirst <player> <0-20> |
Sets a player’s thirst value. | rlcraft.command.thirst |
The documented range is 0 through 20. |
/rlcraft temperature <player> <0-25> |
Sets a player’s temperature value. | rlcraft.command.temperature |
The documented range is 0 through 25. |
/rlcraft reload |
Reloads the RLCraft configuration. | rlcraft.command.reload |
Described as admin-only in the legacy reference; reload behavior can vary by plugin build. |
The same permission reference lists rlcraft.command.* as a wildcard for all listed RLCraft plugin permissions. A wildcard is powerful: use the individual node whenever an administrator needs only one operation.
How to check whether the commands exist
- Join with the intended administrative account.
- Type
/rlcraftand press the tab-completion key. A command list or subcommands indicate that something answering to that label is installed. - Try the exact subcommand only in a test world or with a harmless target.
- If the server reports an unknown command, inspect the server’s installed mods and plugins rather than repeatedly changing OP levels.
- If the command appears but returns a permission error, ask the administrator to assign the specific node or use the console to test the operator account.
Do not infer that a successful vanilla command proves the RLCraft plugin is present. They are separate command systems.

Dedicated server, LAN world, and command blocks: what changes?
| Access method | Who can enable it? | How long it lasts | What it controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated server OP | Console, owner, or existing operator | Persistent until /deop or the server’s operator data is changed |
Vanilla commands allowed by the player’s operator level |
| Dedicated server permission node | Administrator using the installed permission system | Until the group or node is removed | A selected plugin command or command family |
| Single-player Open to LAN | The person who owns the single-player world | Temporary for that LAN session | Cheats for that local world after the LAN toggle is enabled |
enable-command-block=true |
Server administrator editing server.properties |
Until the property is changed | Whether command blocks may execute |
These controls do not substitute for one another. A LAN toggle does not grant permissions on a remote dedicated server, and enabling command blocks does not promote a player.
Single-player RLCraft: temporarily allow cheats through LAN
In a Java single-player world, Minecraft can expose a temporary cheat toggle through the Open to LAN menu. This is useful for a local troubleshooting session, but it is not the procedure for a dedicated server.
Recommended Free Tools
- Load the single-player RLCraft world.
- Open the pause menu and choose Open to LAN.
- Set Allow Cheats to On.
- Choose Start LAN World.
- Use the commands while that LAN session remains active.
When the LAN session ends, the temporary setting no longer functions as a standing multiplayer permission. If the world is later moved to a dedicated server, the new server requires its own console and operator setup.

“You do not have permission” for /gamerule
- Confirm that the account used to type the command is the account that received OP.
- Verify the console accepted
/op <player>without a spelling error. - Disconnect and reconnect after the promotion.
- If a permission plugin is installed, check that it has not assigned the account to a restricted group.
- Remember that Java
/gamerulerequires permission level 2; merely being able to join the server is not enough.
/op appears to do nothing
Check that the command was entered in the server console or by an existing operator. A normal player cannot self-promote. In a hosting panel, make sure the command was sent to the live console rather than pasted into a configuration field. The panel’s labels and syntax handling vary by provider.
/rlcraft is unknown
The documented RLCraft subcommands come from an older plugin reference, not a guarantee that the current 2.9.3 installation contains that plugin. Use tab completion, inspect the server’s installed components, and consult the administrator who assembled the pack. Do not install an unrelated command plugin in a production world without a backup and a compatibility check.
The command is recognized but a permission node is rejected
Ask the server administrator to grant the exact node, such as rlcraft.command.thirst, through the installed permissions system. The wildcard rlcraft.command.* covers the listed RLCraft plugin commands but gives more access than a single node. If the account is already OP and still cannot use the command, the plugin may intentionally check its own permission node.

Structures are missing villagers or command blocks do not run
Stop the server and inspect server.properties. The property must read enable-command-block=true. Restart after saving, then test in a copy or newly generated area. This setting affects command-block execution and related RLCraft structure generation; it does not change a player’s OP status.
A command changes the wrong player or value
Use the exact username and stay within the documented numeric ranges: thirst accepts 0–20 and temperature accepts 0–25 in the legacy reference. Test on a controlled account first, and keep a world backup before making broad changes.
Safer administration practices
Use the smallest practical privilege
For one maintenance job, a dedicated permission node is safer than leaving a user as OP. Reserve full operator status for trusted administrators who need broad vanilla access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBack up before changing rules or player state
Make a recoverable copy of the world before running commands that alter gamerules, inventories, thirst, temperature, or generated areas. A backup is especially important when testing a legacy plugin command whose behavior may differ from the documentation.
Keep a change record
Record who received OP, which permission node was added, and when the change was reversed. This makes it easier to diagnose an apparent permission failure and to remove access after an incident.
Test updates in a copy
RLCraft 2.9.3 targets Minecraft Java 1.12.2, and the legacy command references describe an older plugin generation. Test pack, Forge, and plugin updates away from the production world before changing command permissions or configuration files.
Recommended decision path
- Playing alone? Use Open to LAN and turn on Allow Cheats for the current session.
- Running a dedicated server? Use the console’s
/op <player>workflow, then reconnect the player. - Need command blocks or affected structures? Set
enable-command-block=trueinserver.properties; this is independent of OP. - Need an RLCraft-specific action? Check whether the legacy plugin command exists through tab completion before assigning its permission node.
- Finished? Remove temporary OP with
/deop <player>and revoke any temporary plugin permissions.
The reliable distinction is simple: OP and permission nodes decide which people may issue commands, while enable-command-block=true decides whether command blocks can execute. The older /rlcraft command list is optional, version-sensitive documentation rather than a built-in guarantee of every RLCraft server.
