“RJ45” is familiar shorthand for the modular plug used on ordinary Ethernet cables. If you need to name the physical connector precisely, call it an 8P8C modular connector: eight positions and eight contacts. The distinction matters because “RJ” names a registered interface and wiring arrangement, not merely a connector’s shape.
Why do people call an Ethernet plug “RJ45”?
In everyday networking conversation, “RJ45” is widely understood to mean the modular plug or jack at the end of a typical Ethernet cable. It is useful shorthand, but it blurs two different things: the connector’s physical form and the wiring or interface it is used for.
“RJ” stands for “Registered Jack.” An RJ designation refers to a particular interface configuration, including wiring, rather than simply counting the slots in a plug. NECABLES’ overview of RJ and 8P8C terminology notes that an eight-position jack can be wired for different registered-jack configurations.
What does 8P8C mean?
8P8C describes a modular connector with eight positions and eight contacts. “Positions” are the locations for contacts in the connector; the term does not tell you how those contacts are wired or what the connector is meant to connect.

That makes 8P8C a more precise name for the physical connector than “RJ45,” but it does not, by itself, mean Ethernet. An 8P8C connector alone does not specify the cable category, pin assignment, or supported performance. ISO/IEC 8877:1992 describes an eight-pole connector used in ISDN basic access interfaces, illustrating that eight-pole connectors also appear in telecommunications contexts beyond Ethernet. The ISO catalog entry says the edition was last reviewed and confirmed in 2002 and remains current; its abstract states: “Specifies the 8-pole connector (plug and jack) and the assignments of poles/contacts for use in physical interfaces.”
How are RJ45, RJ45S, RJ48, and 8P8C different?
These labels do not all name the same thing. The familiar Ethernet connector is generally an unkeyed 8P8C modular connector; historical and telecommunications examples show why the connector’s outline alone cannot identify its wiring or application.

DigiKey’s connector overview uses RJ48 as an example of an 8P8C connector for shielded T1 lines. The appearance of an eight-position modular connector therefore does not establish that it is Ethernet-wired.
Why isn’t the connector shape enough for Ethernet?
Ethernet depends on how the conductors are terminated as well as on a connector that fits. A manufacturer’s guide to Ethernet connector wiring describes the T568A and T568B pair assignments and notes that 10/100BASE-T uses two pairs while gigabit Ethernet uses all four. These wiring details are practical guidance from the manufacturer, not a substitute for the applicable cabling standards.

A cable can have 8P8C plugs at both ends and still be unsuitable for a particular Ethernet link if its conductors are not terminated correctly or its cable specification does not meet the link’s requirements. The connector name answers what physical form is present; the wiring and cable specifications answer whether it is appropriate for the connection.
When should you say RJ45, and when should you say 8P8C?
In ordinary conversation
“RJ45 Ethernet port” or “RJ45 Ethernet cable” is convenient, familiar shorthand when the context is standard Ethernet cabling. There is no evidence here of a universal rule forbidding the everyday usage.

In a specification or repair note
Name the physical part as an 8P8C plug or jack, then state the cable and termination details that matter. For example, “Cat 6 cable with 8P8C plugs, terminated to T568B at both ends” gives more useful information than “RJ45 cable.” Include the intended Ethernet link or interface where relevant.

Do not infer its function from its shape alone. Check the device interface and the wiring or pin assignment before replacing or repurposing it; the same eight-position form can be used in different configurations.

Why might a telephone or telecom specialist object?
In registered-jack terminology, “RJ45” is not simply another spelling for “eight-position plug.” It points to a defined interface configuration, while the Ethernet connector people commonly call RJ45 is usually identified more precisely as an unkeyed 8P8C connector. The objection is about technical precision, not whether listeners can understand the common shorthand.
ISO/IEC TR 9578:1990 addresses communication interface connectors used in local area networks, but its broad abstract does not establish that a particular connector is the Ethernet standard. The ISO catalog entry says the report was reviewed and confirmed in 2015.
