RISC-V could give automakers a shared instruction-set foundation for processors across vehicle systems, from real-time controllers to central compute and cockpit electronics. It is an open standard, not a chip: vendors design the processor cores and silicon that implement it, and the value depends on those specific implementations, their software, and their safety evidence.

What RISC-V means for automotive innovation

RISC-V is an open instruction-set architecture (ISA): the defined set of instructions that software uses to communicate with a processor. RISC-V International stewards the standard and ratifies its extensions and profiles. It does not make or sell processor cores; IP vendors and chip designers build implementations and conformant silicon.

RISC-V International describes its role this way: “RISC-V International is the non-profit standards body that stewards the open standard RISC-V ISA, maintaining the specification and ratifying its extensions and profiles. It does not design, license, or sell processor cores; that role belongs to the IP vendors and chip designers who build conformant silicon on the standard.” (RISC-V Automotive Hub.)

The distinction matters. A shared ISA can be implemented in processors for different workloads, but it does not make those processors identical. Designers choose implementation details, supported extensions, performance and power characteristics, and the degree of software compatibility.

Why automakers are considering it

The automotive case is breadth: a vehicle platform could use RISC-V implementations in small deterministic control processors, zonal controllers, advanced driver-assistance and autonomous-driving systems, and cockpit computing. The architecture’s modularity lets designers tailor processors to different compute, power, and safety needs.

  • Workload-specific designs: Designers can select and extend processor features for a particular task rather than assume one processor configuration suits every system.
  • Potential software reuse: A common ISA may support reuse of software and tools across a vehicle platform, but compatibility depends on implementation choices, extensions, operating environments, and toolchain support.
  • Potential supplier options: Multiple vendors may offer implementations of the standard. That possibility is not proof that equivalent second sources exist for a specific component or that switching suppliers is seamless.

These are potential design and sourcing advantages, not established guarantees of lower cost, interchangeable chips, or easier qualification. A vehicle program would need to assess software portability, workload performance and power, functional-safety evidence, cybersecurity support, supplier availability and lifecycle support, customization versus compatibility, and total program cost over the vehicle’s long lifecycle. The available sources do not establish a quantitative, universal advantage over proprietary processor architectures.

How vehicle architecture is changing

RISC-V International’s 2025 annual report describes an industry shift from domain-based electronic control units, which group functions by domain, toward zonal controllers, which consolidate functions by physical area of the vehicle. This architectural transition creates interest in processors that can serve varied roles, but it does not mean every vehicle is adopting one design or one ISA.

The report says Infineon announced in March 2025 that its automotive microcontroller roadmap would be fully based on RISC-V. That is a roadmap announcement, not evidence that the entire product family was already commercially available. Separately, RISC-V International’s supply-chain page described Infineon bringing RISC-V into its AURIX automotive MCU brand ahead of a full market launch in 2027. That is future-facing timing and should be treated as a stated plan, not a current availability claim.

Where RISC-V could fit in a vehicle

Real-time control

Small microcontrollers handle bounded, deterministic tasks such as monitoring inputs and controlling components. A RISC-V implementation may be designed for this kind of workload, but vehicle suitability depends on the particular processor, its software and development tools, and the program’s assurance requirements.

Zonal and central compute

Zonal controllers consolidate functions near vehicle areas, while central compute platforms can coordinate broader software-defined vehicle workloads. A common ISA across some of these roles could support platform-level software strategies; it does not by itself establish that code can move between processors without adaptation.

Driver assistance, autonomy, and cockpit systems

AI and other compute-intensive workloads have different power budgets and safety obligations depending on where they run and what the vehicle relies on them to do. The ISA is only one layer. The processor implementation, accelerators, system architecture, software, and evidence for the intended use all affect whether a design is appropriate.

Does an open ISA make a processor safe or certified?

No. Openness can make the architectural foundation inspectable, but it does not certify a processor or vehicle system. RISC-V International says it does not certify products. Safety and cybersecurity claims must be supported by evidence for the specific implementation, tools, development processes, and system in which it is used.

For safety-related vehicle workloads, RISC-V International identifies ISO 26262 for functional safety, ISO 21448 for safety of the intended functionality, and ISO/PAS 8800:2024 for AI-related safety concerns. These standards address assurance questions beyond the instruction set. An ISA choice alone does not show that a product or AI function meets them.

What the market estimate says—and does not say

RISC-V International reports an estimate attributed to Informa of a $5.2 billion global automotive AI processor market in 2025 and a forecast of $12.6 billion by 2030, representing a stated 19.4% compound annual growth rate. These are Informa’s 2025 estimate and 2030 forecast as relayed by RISC-V International, not audited sales figures or counts of vehicles using RISC-V. The underlying Informa publication was not independently available in the cited material, so the figures should be read with that attribution in mind. (RISC-V AI.)

What the European Union is doing

The European Commission’s Vehicle of the Future initiative aims to strengthen EU competitiveness in software-defined vehicles and includes a roadmap for RISC-V processors and reference architectures. It signals public-sector interest in the technology and ecosystem; it is not evidence that the planned hardware is already in production vehicles. (European Commission: Vehicle of the Future.)

What to check in a RISC-V automotive proposal

For an automaker or engineering team evaluating a specific design, the useful question is not simply whether it uses RISC-V. Check the implementation and its fit for the intended vehicle function:

  • Which ISA extensions and profiles does the processor support, and are they consistent with the software and tools the program needs?
  • What performance and power evidence exists for the target workload and operating conditions?
  • What functional-safety and cybersecurity evidence applies to the processor, development tools, and complete system?
  • Can another supplier provide a sufficiently compatible implementation, and what adaptation, validation, or requalification would a switch require?
  • What are the supplier’s availability, product roadmap, and lifecycle-support commitments for the vehicle program?
  • How do customization benefits compare with compatibility needs and total program cost over the vehicle’s lifecycle?

These checks distinguish an open architectural foundation from a production-ready automotive solution. RISC-V’s potential depends on the specific silicon, software ecosystem, supply arrangements, and safety case—not openness alone.
