If your Ring setup is stuck, identify which step fails: app or QR scan, location, the phone’s temporary Ring network, home Wi-Fi, power, or a device that later goes offline. Work through the matching fix below. Keep the exact model handy—power requirements, reset controls, and 5 GHz support vary by device.

Before you retry setup

Ring setup runs in the Ring app. First, your phone connects to the Ring device’s temporary setup network; then the app connects the device to your home Wi-Fi. Keep the phone near the device throughout both steps.

  • Update the Ring app and your phone’s operating system. Ring’s support article, “Troubleshooting issues using the Ring app and Neighbors app”, lists iOS 17 or later and Android 9 or later as requirements; app compatibility requirements can change.
  • Have your home Wi-Fi password ready, turn off any VPN temporarily, and leave only one Ring device in setup mode.
  • Charge a battery-powered or solar device before setup. For a wired or plug-in model, check that it has the correct power source for that model.
  • Confirm that your phone can connect to your home Wi-Fi. If possible, move the Ring device closer to the router during setup.

Why can’t the Ring app scan the QR code or find my location?

QR code or PIN won’t scan

Look for the QR code or PIN on the back of the device, beneath a faceplate, or under a camera’s battery compartment. Use good lighting and hold the phone steady so the camera can focus. If scanning still fails, choose the manual-entry or alternate setup option offered in the Ring app; a failed scan does not necessarily prevent setup.

Location is wrong or unavailable

Check that the Ring app has permission to use your phone’s location, and confirm you are signed in to the account where the device should be set up. If automatic location detection is inaccurate, enter the address manually or adjust the map pin in the app. Ring’s app troubleshooting guide and doorbell setup guide cover these setup paths.

Why can’t my phone connect to the Ring Wi-Fi network?

The device must be powered and in setup mode to broadcast its temporary network. If the app does not connect automatically, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, select the network named for Ring or Ring Setup, then return to the app and continue. Ring describes this process in its setup troubleshooting guide, doorbell setup guide, and UK camera setup guide.

If that network does not appear, verify that the device has power and is actually in setup mode. Try setup from another mobile device if the network remains unavailable. Before using a reset button or power-cycling the device, identify its model and follow the model-specific instructions; reset controls and procedures are not universal.

Why won’t my Ring connect to home Wi-Fi?

Once the phone has connected to the temporary Ring network, the app asks the device to join your home network. If your network is missing or the password is rejected, check the following:

  • Distance: Move the Ring device closer to the router while setting it up. A weak signal can prevent a successful connection.
  • Band: Try a 2.4 GHz network if the 5 GHz network is not listed. Ring says all its devices support 2.4 GHz, while only some models support 5 GHz. Ring’s setup guidance notes that 2.4 GHz offers broader compatibility and greater range; do not assume a particular model supports every band.
  • Password: Re-enter the exact Wi-Fi password, including capitalization and special characters. Check that your phone can join the same network.
  • Security mode: Ring recommends WPA2 and says its devices are currently not compatible with WPA3. If the router is set to WPA3, check the router maker’s or internet provider’s instructions for a supported security configuration before changing settings.

Ring’s Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting also suggests a guest network for some connection failures. Whether that option helps depends on your router and configuration. If the network still cannot be joined, ask your router manufacturer or internet provider about compatible settings rather than assuming a new router is needed. Ring’s product compatibility FAQ can help clarify device-specific support.

Why does my Ring keep going offline?

Open the Ring app and check the device’s offline status and Device Health. If available, use the app’s Reconnect or Change Network flow to restore or select a connection. Ring’s offline-device guidance explains those checks. While a device is disconnected, it cannot provide live video, alerts, or event recordings.

If the device repeatedly drops offline, check its battery level or the correct power supply for the model, then consider signal strength. An extender or mesh system may help when weak coverage is the diagnosed problem, but it is not a universal setup fix. Ring names Chime Pro and eero as optional examples for improving coverage; neither is a setup prerequisite.
