Ring founder and chief inventor Jamie Siminoff says Apple’s anticipated smart-home push will not change his approach: keep building distinctive products that customers find valuable. His clearest example is Ring’s first announced smart lock, which combines four ways to unlock with a hand-operated dial intended to restore power. It is not yet cleared for sale, however: Amazon expects U.S. availability in early 2027, and Ring says FCC authorization is still required.
What did Jamie Siminoff say about Apple’s smart-home plans?
In an October 12, 2026, interview with Yahoo Finance, Siminoff said he intends to keep focusing on innovation and products people will pay for because they see value in them. “I’m going to keep winning by innovating and coming out with products that no one has ever seen that deliver huge value and that people want to reward me because it delivers them value,” he said. “They’re going to reward me by buying it. I’m just going to keep doing that. Keep my head down.”
He also described his first announced lock as an expression of that strategy: “I love winning, but my way of winning is I’m going to build a lock that no one else has.” That is Siminoff’s stated ambition, not independent evidence that the lock is unique or better than alternatives.

The central design feature is a built-in power dial. Ring says users can turn it by hand to generate backup power if the lock’s battery runs out, rather than relying only on a powered electronic input. Amazon describes the product as a smart lock built around that manual backup approach.

Amazon and Ring also describe integration with Ring and Amazon devices, plus connectivity through Amazon Sidewalk. Ring says the lock fits a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and requires no additional wiring. Its product information lists app-based access management and activity history. These are manufacturer-described features; the available reporting does not provide independent tests of reliability, security, or performance.
When will Ring’s smart lock be available, and can you buy it now?
Amazon says U.S. availability is expected in early 2027. Ring’s product page lists a price of $249.99 and offers an availability notification, but also says the device has not received the FCC authorization required before it may be sold or leased. The listed price is not confirmation that the lock is currently cleared or available to buy.

Availability outside the United States is not established in these announcements. Buyers considering any smart lock should verify its regulatory status and market availability, along with door compatibility, before purchasing.
How is Apple expected to compete with Ring?
Yahoo Finance frames Apple as a potential smart-home challenger and describes a dedicated home display as widely expected, with a doorbell, lock, thermostat, and possible collaboration with LG discussed as potential parts of a broader effort. Those details are reported expectations, not confirmed Apple products, specifications, or launch plans in the cited material. They do not establish what Apple will release or when.

Why does Siminoff’s response matter?
Yahoo Finance reports that Amazon acquired Ring in 2018 for $1.15 billion, that Siminoff left Amazon in 2023, and that he returned in early 2025 to lead its security products. The same article identifies him as Ring’s founder and chief inventor. His comments position the new lock as a product-led response to potential competition: focus on a design he believes customers will value rather than redirecting strategy around unconfirmed rival plans.
