Airthings View Plus is the better all-round indoor monitor if you want radon screening, CO₂-based ventilation feedback, VOC and PM2.5 measurements, a built-in display, and Wi‑Fi history. Ring Air Quality Monitor is the better budget and ecosystem choice for households already using Ring or Alexa that need PM2.5, carbon monoxide, humidity, and temperature readings without radon or CO₂ data.
The most important distinction is that carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) are different gases. Ring measures CO but not CO₂ or radon. View Plus measures CO₂ and radon but its seven-factor specification does not list a CO sensor. Neither product replaces a code-required carbon-monoxide alarm, smoke alarm, professional radon testing, or medical advice.
Quick verdict
Choose the Ring Air Quality Monitor when the priorities are a lower upfront price, Ring app and Alexa integration, and basic monitoring of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, humidity, and temperature. The US Ring product page lists it at $69.99 in 2026. It uses Amazon Sidewalk, so usefulness depends on Sidewalk coverage at your address.
Choose the Airthings View Plus when you need the broadest sensor coverage in this comparison. It measures seven factors at once—radon, PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and air pressure—and adds a 2.9-inch ePaper screen, Wi‑Fi or SmartLink connectivity, Bluetooth setup, and up to two years of battery life. It is the stronger fit for ventilation decisions, radon awareness, and people who want readings visible in the room rather than only in an app.

What the Ring Air Quality Monitor actually measures
Four readings, including carbon monoxide
Ring’s stated measurement list is particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, humidity, and temperature. PM2.5 is a particle-size category associated with fine airborne particles; carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion. Humidity and temperature provide basic comfort and environment context.
Ring’s own FAQ is explicit that the Air Quality Monitor does not measure carbon dioxide (CO₂) or radon. That means it cannot tell you whether a crowded room needs more ventilation based on CO₂ accumulation, and it cannot provide radon screening. Those omissions are not software limitations that an update can be assumed to fix; they reflect the listed sensor set.
Ring ecosystem and physical specification
The monitor communicates through Amazon Sidewalk and reports through the Ring app, with Alexa compatibility for people who already use that ecosystem. Sidewalk availability varies by location, so check coverage before buying. The device is designed for indoor operation from 0°C to 40°C, measures 46.6 × 65 × 65 mm, and uses AC power. Ring lists a one-year limited warranty on its US product page.
What Airthings View Plus measures
Seven-factor coverage
View Plus monitors radon, PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and air pressure simultaneously. This combination covers combustion-related particles, ventilation, chemical emissions, a major naturally occurring indoor gas, and basic comfort conditions.
Its CO₂ sensor is a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) design with a stated range of 400 to 5,000 parts per million. Airthings specifies a passive diffusion chamber and alpha spectrometry for radon measurement. These are manufacturer specifications describing what the sensors are designed to measure, not an independent laboratory accuracy or detection-limit test.

Display and status indicator
The model 2960 has a 2.9-inch ePaper display with 296 × 128-pixel resolution. A red, yellow, or green indicator gives a quick status cue, while the screen provides an on-device view without opening a phone app. Wall and tabletop placement are both supported.
Sampling and calibration
Airthings’ technical specification states a five-minute sensor sampling interval. The CO₂ and VOC sensors need about seven days of initial calibration. During that first week, treat readings as a settling baseline rather than a definitive picture of long-term conditions; keep the unit in its intended location and allow the calibration period to complete before drawing comparisons between rooms.

CO versus CO₂: the decision that changes the choice
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, poisonous combustion gas. A monitor that measures CO can provide an additional indication of a problem, but it is not a substitute for a listed, code-compliant carbon-monoxide alarm installed according to local requirements. Ring includes CO in its measurement list; View Plus does not list a CO sensor.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a different gas, produced by people and combustion and commonly used as an indicator of ventilation in occupied rooms. Ring does not measure CO₂. View Plus does, using its NDIR sensor. If your question is whether a bedroom, classroom, office, or meeting room needs more outdoor air, View Plus is the relevant choice of these two.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings from the ground. View Plus provides radon monitoring; Ring does not. A consumer monitor can support screening and ongoing observation, but local health authorities may recommend a certified short-term or long-term test for confirmation, especially when buying a home, after mitigation work, or when readings are persistently elevated.

Connectivity, app dependence, and history
Ring: simple if Sidewalk and Ring are already in place
Ring uses Amazon Sidewalk rather than a directly listed Wi‑Fi connection. Readings are monitored in the Ring app, and Alexa compatibility can fit an existing voice-assistant setup. The practical question is not only whether your home has internet, but whether Amazon Sidewalk coverage is available where the monitor will operate. Coverage varies by location, so verify it before purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
Ring’s listed specifications do not include a built-in screen. Plan to use the Ring app or compatible Alexa experience to check readings and alerts. The supplied product information does not establish a particular historical-data retention period, export format, or sampling interval for Ring, so do not assume those features match View Plus.
View Plus: Wi‑Fi or SmartLink, with Bluetooth setup
View Plus supports Wi‑Fi or SmartLink connectivity with a hub and uses Bluetooth during setup. The combination allows on-device viewing and connected access, while Airthings provides cloud history for reviewing changes over time. If you want to compare ventilation patterns by time of day or observe radon trends, this historical view is a major advantage over a device used only for occasional spot checks.
Power and placement trade-offs
When AC power helps
Ring’s AC power means you do not have to plan for battery replacement, but placement is constrained by access to an outlet and a suitable indoor location. Its compact 46.6 × 65 × 65 mm body can fit on a shelf or other supported surface; keep it within the stated 0°C–40°C indoor operating range.
When long battery life helps
View Plus is rated for up to two years of battery life. That rating is a maximum claim, not a guarantee for every connectivity pattern or environment. Battery operation makes wall or tabletop placement easier when there is no nearby outlet. Do not hide the display behind furniture if you intend to use its at-a-glance indicator.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For either monitor, place the unit where the measurements represent the room you care about. Avoid enclosing it in a cabinet or placing it directly beside a stove, heater, open window, supply vent, or humidifier unless that is the condition you are specifically investigating. A monitor near a localized source can be useful for diagnosing that source but should not be treated as the average exposure for the entire home.
Setup procedures
Set up Ring Air Quality Monitor
- Confirm coverage and location. Check whether Amazon Sidewalk is available at the installation address, and choose an indoor location within the 0°C–40°C operating range.
- Connect AC power. Place the monitor where its readings will represent the room, then connect its power supply.
- Add it in the Ring app. Use the app’s device-add flow and follow the on-screen pairing instructions. The supplied specifications identify the Ring app as the monitoring interface but do not define a universal menu label that applies to every app version.
- Complete the Sidewalk connection. Allow the app to finish the Sidewalk connection and resolve any coverage or account prompts before relying on remote readings.
- Link Alexa if needed. If you use Alexa, add the Ring device through the Alexa integration so compatible voice features and notifications can be configured.
- Check the four reported values. Verify that PM2.5, CO, humidity, and temperature are appearing in the app. Do not look for CO₂ or radon fields; Ring does not measure them.
Set up Airthings View Plus
- Choose wall or tabletop placement. Select a stable indoor position with the display visible and airflow representative of the room.
- Start Bluetooth setup. Use the Airthings setup process over Bluetooth to add model 2960 and configure the device.
- Connect Wi‑Fi or SmartLink. Choose the connection method supported by your installation. SmartLink requires the compatible hub described by Airthings.
- Leave the monitor in position. Avoid moving it between rooms during the initial baseline period unless you deliberately want to restart the comparison in a different location.
- Allow approximately seven days. CO₂ and VOC sensors require about seven days of initial calibration. Continue normal occupancy and ventilation so the baseline reflects real conditions.
- Use both the screen and history. Read the current status on the ePaper display and use connected history to examine patterns after calibration. The technical specification states that samples are taken every five minutes.
Which monitor fits common situations?
Choose Ring for a Ring/Alexa household on a tight budget
Ring is the logical pick when $69.99 is the deciding price point, Sidewalk works at your location, and you mainly want PM2.5, CO, humidity, and temperature in the Ring app. It avoids adding another connected-home platform and can complement existing Alexa routines. It is not the right choice if radon or CO₂ is central to the purchase.
Choose View Plus for ventilation decisions
View Plus is better for identifying whether occupancy and closed windows are associated with rising CO₂. The five-minute sampling specification and cloud history make it possible to examine recurring patterns rather than relying on one reading. Remember that CO₂ is a ventilation indicator, not a complete measure of every pollutant or a direct medical diagnosis.
Choose View Plus for radon awareness
If you are concerned about radon because of local geology, a basement or ground-level room, a property transaction, or a previous test, View Plus is the only one of these two with a radon sensor. Use it as an ongoing screening tool and follow local guidance on confirmatory testing and mitigation.
Choose Ring when you already have a separate radon and CO₂ strategy
Ring can make sense when another instrument already covers radon and CO₂, or when those measurements are outside your needs. Its compact AC-powered design and Ring integration keep the additional device simple, while PM2.5 and CO readings add information that a CO₂/radon-focused monitor may not provide.

Choose neither as your only life-safety alarm
Neither product should be the sole protection against fire or carbon-monoxide emergencies. Install certified smoke and CO alarms as required by local code, maintain them, and follow their replacement schedules. An air-quality monitor’s app alert, display color, or sensor reading should not be treated as an emergency alarm unless the manufacturer and local authorities explicitly certify it for that purpose.
Price and total ownership considerations
Ring’s stated US price is $69.99 on the 2026 product page. That is a listed purchase price for the US edition; taxes, delivery, regional availability, and future promotions can change the amount paid. Airthings View Plus pricing is not stated in the supplied product specifications, so a fair comparison requires checking the current price for model 2960 in your country rather than assuming a US or historical figure.
Purchase price is only one part of the decision. Ring’s AC power avoids battery replacement but requires an outlet and Sidewalk coverage. View Plus’s up-to-two-year battery claim reduces wiring constraints, while its broader sensors and cloud history may justify a higher price for readers who would otherwise need separate radon or CO₂ equipment. Any hub requirement for SmartLink, replacement batteries, or optional services should be confirmed in the current regional listing because those costs are not specified here.
Accuracy, calibration, and limits of the evidence
The figures in this comparison come from manufacturer product and technical specifications. They establish the sensors, ranges, connectivity, sampling interval, physical design, and stated calibration behavior; they do not establish independent laboratory accuracy, cross-device agreement, response time under every condition, or medical significance.
For View Plus, allow the full seven-day CO₂/VOC calibration period and interpret trends over time rather than reacting to a single value. For Ring, the supplied specifications do not state a sampling interval or calibration period, so avoid inferring precision or response characteristics that have not been published.
Environmental monitors can be affected by placement, airflow, temperature, humidity, cooking, cleaning products, combustion, and occupancy. If a reading suggests an immediate danger—particularly suspected carbon monoxide—leave the area and follow emergency procedures rather than waiting for an app refresh or trying to troubleshoot the monitor first.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you need radon screening? If yes, select View Plus; Ring does not measure radon.
- Do you need CO₂ for ventilation feedback? If yes, select View Plus; Ring does not measure CO₂.
- Do you need a carbon-monoxide reading in the same device? Ring lists CO; View Plus’s seven-factor list does not.
- Do you need VOC and air-pressure data? View Plus lists both; Ring does not.
- Do you want a local screen? View Plus has a 2.9-inch ePaper display; Ring’s listed specification has no display.
- Do you already use Ring and Alexa, and does Sidewalk work at your address? Ring has the simpler ecosystem fit.
- Do you need a five-minute sampling specification and cloud history? View Plus provides both in its technical and product information.
- Is the lowest stated upfront price the priority? Ring’s US listing is $69.99 in 2026; View Plus’s price is not stated here and must be checked locally.
- Are you shopping for emergency protection? Buy and maintain certified smoke and CO alarms separately.
Final recommendation
For most readers comparing these products as their main indoor air-quality monitor, Airthings View Plus is the more capable choice: it covers radon, CO₂, VOCs, PM2.5, humidity, temperature, and pressure; shows readings locally; samples every five minutes; and retains connected history. Its seven-day CO₂/VOC calibration period and higher likely purchase cost are trade-offs for that coverage.
