As of Ludeon Studios’ October 12, 2026 announcement, RimWorld 1.6 is the public Steam branch and RimWorld 1.7 is available through Steam’s unstable beta branch. Ludeon says 1.6 saves load on 1.7, 1.7 saves work when you return to 1.6, and the vast majority of mods work on 1.7 without author changes. Those are broad, version-specific assurances—not a guarantee for every mod, load order, or heavily modded save. Check the branch you are actually running and each important mod’s current Workshop metadata before changing versions.
What is the current RimWorld 1.6/1.7 status?
The branch state described by Ludeon on October 12, 2026 is:

Before following an old guide, open RimWorld’s Steam properties and read the branch labels currently offered. A later public release can make October’s branch description obsolete.

Yes, for this transition Ludeon states: “Your 1.6 savegames will load on 1.7, and 1.7 saves also work if you go back to 1.6.” That is an explicit 1.6/1.7 statement from the October 12, 2026 announcement. It should not be generalized to every future major-version change or treated as proof that every modded save will behave perfectly.

What the statement does—and does not—promise
- It covers the game-version direction both ways: 1.6 to 1.7 and 1.7 back to 1.6.
- It does not certify your particular mod list: a save can open while a mod causes missing content, errors, or changed behavior.
- It does not remove branch risk: 1.7 is described as unstable in the announcement, so testing it is different from staying on the public branch.
- It does not make older transitions equivalent: the earlier 1.5-to-1.6 guidance had stricter wording about mods and specifically referred to unmodded saves.
Protect a valuable colony before testing
Make a separate copy of important save files before changing branches or allowing a large mod set to update. Keep the copy outside the location where you normally overwrite saves, and record the branch and mod list used to create it. If the test produces a problem, return to the original branch and load the untouched copy rather than repeatedly saving over the only version.
Will my mods work on RimWorld 1.7?
Ludeon says “the vast majority of mods work on 1.7 without any changes from the authors.” That is an unusually positive aggregate statement, but “vast majority” is not “all.” Compatibility depends on what a mod changes, whether it has version-specific files, and how it interacts with other mods in the same load order.
Why a mod can work despite a yellow warning
Ludeon says some mods may appear in yellow as “potentially unsupported” only because the game version number changed. The warning is therefore not conclusive evidence that the mod is broken. Treat it as a prompt to verify, not as an automatic reason to delete the mod.
For every mod that is essential to your colony, open its current Steam Workshop page and read the author’s latest description, update notes, and supported-version metadata. A general announcement cannot establish support for a named mod, an old fork, or a particular collection. If the author has not confirmed 1.7, test the mod on a copy of the save and watch for missing definitions, red errors, or changed gameplay before committing to the new branch.

How to interpret a failed load
- If the game starts but a save reports missing content, identify which mod supplied that content before saving again.
- If errors appear immediately after enabling a mod, disable that mod first and retest with the rest of the list unchanged.
- If the problem appears only with a particular combination, test the suspected mods separately; a mod that works alone can still conflict with another.
- If a mod’s Workshop metadata lists only 1.6, do not infer 1.7 support solely from Ludeon’s aggregate statement.
How do I switch to the unstable 1.7 beta branch?
Steam’s branch selector is the normal route described for testing an unstable build. The labels can change, so use the version name shown in your client rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click RimWorld and choose Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Open the branch dropdown and choose the entry identified as the unstable 1.7 branch, if it is still offered.
- Close the properties window and let Steam download the branch files.
- Launch RimWorld and confirm the displayed game version before opening a valuable save.
- Check the Mods screen and each important Workshop entry; then test a copied save first.
If 1.7 has since become the public branch, the dropdown may no longer describe it as an unstable beta. The October 12 announcement is the time-stamped basis for the branch names above.
How do I stay on version 1.6?
In the branch state Ludeon described, simply remain on the public main branch and do not select the unstable 1.7 beta. If Steam has already switched your installation, return to Properties → Betas and select the public/default option offered by the client, then allow Steam to finish synchronizing files.

Can I return from 1.7 to 1.6?
Ludeon’s announcement explicitly says that 1.7 saves also work if you go back to 1.6. The practical risk is not the stated save-direction compatibility; it is what happens to content supplied by mods while you are testing. Keep a pre-update copy, avoid overwriting it, and restore the branch before opening that copy if the 1.7 test has changed your mod setup.
When returning to 1.6, let Steam complete the branch change, confirm the game version, and check the Mods screen before loading. If a mod updated to a 1.7-only release, use the author’s documented version option or temporarily disable it rather than assuming Steam will reconstruct the exact earlier state.
How does RimWorld mod version support work?
Ludeon’s technical explanation describes how one Workshop entry can support more than one game version. A mod can list multiple supported versions in its About.xml file. It can also place version-specific files in folders named for the target version.

This mechanism explains how multi-version support is implemented; it does not prove that a particular mod has been updated or tested. The current Workshop metadata and author notes remain the authoritative check for that mod.

What was different about the 1.5-to-1.6 transition?
Ludeon’s earlier guidance is easy to misapply. During the 1.5-to-1.6 transition, Ludeon said unmodded 1.5 saves would load in 1.6 and warned that mods not updated to 1.6 would not work there. It also described a Steam version-1.5 beta branch for players who wanted to remain on 1.5.
That wording is narrower than the later 1.6/1.7 statement. Do not quote the old “unmodded” condition as if it were the 1.7 rule, and do not use the old branch name as evidence of the current Steam layout. Each transition needs its own announcement and its own mod checks.

In Ludeon’s June 8, 2026 post, the studio wrote that version 1.6.4850 “should be compatible with all savegames and mods.” The same changelog discussed removing old back-compatibility code that had caused issues with mods. This assurance applies to that point update; it is not a blanket promise for every later release or every mod combination.

How much faster is 1.7?
Ludeon attributes substantial performance gains to the Waylith Engine in its 2026 announcement:

More than two dozen modders helped test 1.7 preparation, according to Ludeon. That collaboration supports confidence in the transition, but it does not replace checking the specific mods in your own collection.
A safe decision process for your colony
Choose the public branch when stability matters most
- You are running a long-term colony that you do not want to troubleshoot.
- Your essential mods have not published 1.7 information.
- You cannot maintain a separate test save and mod profile.
Choose the unstable branch when you can test deliberately
- You want to evaluate the new engine before the public release.
- You can preserve an untouched 1.6 save and document your mod list.
- You are willing to report issues and remove or isolate mods when errors appear.
Use a staged test instead of a one-click migration
- Record the current branch, game version, and active mod order.
- Copy the save you intend to test.
- Switch branches through Steam’s Properties → Betas page.
- Confirm the version shown in-game.
- Review warning colors and current Workshop metadata for essential mods.
- Open the copied save and play long enough to exercise the systems those mods control.
- Keep the public branch and original save untouched until the test meets your needs.
What should I do when compatibility fails?
Start by separating a branch problem from a mod problem. Confirm the game version, then disable only the mod most closely associated with the first error and retry the copied save. If the error remains, test a small group rather than changing the entire list at once. This preserves a useful cause-and-effect trail.
- Game will not start: return to the known branch, verify files through Steam if necessary, and reintroduce mods in small groups.
- Save opens with missing content: identify the supplying mod and stop before saving over the original.
- Yellow “potentially unsupported” status: check the mod’s current listing; Ludeon says the color can result solely from the changed version number.
- Errors begin after a mod update: compare the mod’s current version notes with your recorded list and test without that update on a copy.
- Problems occur only in a large collection: isolate by batches, because aggregate compatibility does not guarantee every interaction.
For a named mod, the author’s current documentation is more specific than any aggregate statement. The available official guidance does not provide a universal compatibility database or certify individual load orders.
Bottom line for RimWorld players
On the date of Ludeon’s October 12, 2026 announcement, 1.6 was public and 1.7 was unstable-beta software. Ludeon says saves move between those two versions in either direction and that most mods work without author changes. Use that as permission to test—not as a reason to skip backups, branch checks, or mod-specific verification. Keep a protected 1.6 copy, test 1.7 on the unstable branch, and treat every mod warning or error in the context of the exact Workshop metadata and load order you are using.
