A right-click menu, more generally called a context menu, is a menu of actions related to the item or area you are interacting with. It keeps relevant commands handy without leaving them permanently visible in the main interface. Right-clicking is a common way to open one, but it is not the only way.
What does “right-click menu” mean?
A context menu shows commands that apply to the selected item, content, or part of an interface. For example, the options depend on what you clicked and where you clicked it; there is no single fixed set of commands shared by every menu. Apple describes a context menu as providing access to functionality directly related to an item without cluttering the interface.
These menus are usually hidden until requested. That saves screen space, although it can make available actions less obvious if you do not know to look for a menu.
How do you open a context menu?
The available gesture depends on the device and platform. “Right-click” refers to the familiar mouse action, not a requirement to use a mouse.

- Mouse: Use the secondary, commonly right-hand, mouse button over the item or area. This is the familiar right-click gesture.
- Keyboard: On systems with a context-menu key, press it while the relevant item or interface element has focus. MDN notes that the menu is positioned at the lower-left of the focused element; tree elements have a different row-based positioning rule.
- Apple devices: Depending on the device and supported environment, options include Control-click, secondary click on a Magic Trackpad, or a touch-and-hold gesture. These methods are not available in the same way on every Apple device.
There is no universal gesture across all computers and touch devices. If one method does not work, check the device or app’s instructions for its secondary-click or context-menu controls.
Why does the menu change from one place to another?
Its commands are chosen for the current context: the selected item, content, or interface area. An item might offer actions specific to it, while a different area can offer different commands or none at all. Well-designed menus prioritize relevant, likely-to-be-used actions and avoid deep layers of submenus, which are harder to navigate.

What happens when you right-click a web page?
On a website, the browser normally handles a request to open a context menu. The browser can notify the page through the JavaScript contextmenu event. A site’s script can call preventDefault() to suppress the usual browser menu, but this behavior is not foolproof: MDN documents that Firefox shows the menu for Shift-right-click without firing the event.
The W3C Pointer Events Working Draft dated 2026-02-11 describes the context-menu event’s default action as invoking a context menu when supported. It says the event must occur before the menu and, for a right mouse button, after mousedown; its timing relative to mouseup depends on the platform. This is standards guidance, not a guarantee that every browser behaves identically.
