Rich-media ads work best when the interaction helps deliver the campaign message—not when users must interact to understand it. Give the brand and proposition a clear first display, load heavier features only when useful, and confirm that the creative fits the publisher, device, and serving environment before scaling spend.

What counts as a rich-media ad?

Rich media is not one universally supported ad unit. It can include interactive HTML5 display creative and mobile-app experiences, with behavior and technical requirements that vary by placement, publisher, device, and ad-serving environment. IAB Tech Lab describes HTML5 ads as mini web pages made up of multiple file types, so production involves more than exporting a single image or video.

For each placement, use the current standard and publisher specification that apply. IAB Canada says its flexible HTML5 display portfolio replaces prior creative display guidelines, including rich-media units; older unit limits should not be assumed to apply today. See IAB Canada’s Digital Advertising Guidelines and obtain the live requirements from the intended publisher and platform.

How should brands design the interaction?

Start with the objective and user action

Choose an interaction—such as expanding a panel or playing video—only if it helps people understand the message or take a relevant next step. Keep a clear route to the landing page, and make the brand and core proposition apparent without requiring a tap, hover, expansion, or video start. That way, the message still works when an interaction is unavailable or a user chooses not to engage.

Make the first display count

Prioritize a quick, comprehensible initial display before loading optional interactive elements. IAB Tech Lab’s HTML5 for Digital Advertising Guidance recommends attention to packaging and load performance, including minimizing render-blocking dependencies, deferring interactive elements, and avoiding unnecessary downloads.

A legacy IAB creative-guidelines document also advises deferring heavy file weight until a user initiates interaction. Treat that as a durable performance principle, not a current universal file-size cap: the older IAB guidelines contain technical values from an earlier guidance era.

How can teams make rich-media ads load faster?

  • Keep the initial experience lean: avoid large media or code that delays the first visible message.
  • Stage optional features: defer interactive resources until they are relevant or initiated, rather than downloading everything up front.
  • Package deliberately: account for the creative’s multiple files and dependencies, and remove unnecessary downloads.
  • Validate under realistic conditions: test the final package in the expected serving context, including device sizes, browsers, publisher rules, and fallback behavior.

There is no single current weight limit established here for every rich-media placement. Confirm the applicable limits and acceptance criteria with the publisher and serving platform instead of reusing an older figure.

What should teams confirm before launch?

Use the actual destination environment—not just a local preview—to check that the ad renders, interactions work, and measurement events are recorded as intended. IAB Tech Lab’s HTML5 guidance covers generating and packaging ads, testing, and coordinating with ad operations so creative loads and works in a live campaign.

  • Ask the publisher and ad-serving partner for current creative specifications and supported features.
  • Check the initial display and the expanded or interactive states on the target device sizes and browsers.
  • Verify fallback behavior when an interaction or feature is unavailable.
  • Confirm that click-through destinations and interaction events behave as intended.
  • Agree with ad operations on acceptance, troubleshooting, and escalation before buying at scale.

Do rich-media ads work in mobile apps?

They can, but the experience depends on the app’s implementation and the supply partner’s support. IAB Tech Lab describes MRAID as a standardized command set that lets HTML5/JavaScript rich-media ads communicate with apps about behaviors such as expand and resize. Its MRAID overview is useful context, but the standard’s existence does not guarantee that a particular app, publisher, or ad server supports every feature.

IAB Tech Lab describes SHARC as a secure HTML ad container for supported web and app environments. Check with each partner what is implemented and test the creative in the intended app or container; see IAB Tech Lab’s SHARC overview.

Which campaign quality controls belong in the plan?

Quality is broader than whether an ad renders or is viewable. IAB Europe’s 2024 Guide to Quality covers viewability, brand safety and suitability, ad fraud, creative and user experience, privacy, and sustainability best practices. Agree with media partners on placement exclusions, consent and data-use handling, monitoring, and how issues will be escalated and remediated during the campaign.

As IAB Europe CMO Helen Mussard put it in the guide’s announcement, “We believe that quality is a shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the digital advertising ecosystem.”

What should a brand measure?

Separate exposure from campaign outcomes. Google Ad Manager’s Overview of Viewability and Active View presents the IAB display viewability definition: at least 50% of an ad’s pixels visible in the browser window continuously for one second. This is an opportunity-to-see threshold; it does not, by itself, establish attention, brand lift, or sales.

Report the measurement source and definition, then pair exposure metrics with outcome measures suited to the campaign objective. An interaction may be useful to measure when it represents a meaningful user action, but interaction volume alone does not demonstrate business impact.

How should brands handle AI involvement?

When AI materially contributes to consumer-facing marketing, plan how to communicate that involvement rather than assuming disclosure is irrelevant. IAB’s August 18, 2026 announcement of Framework Version 2 describes a risk-based approach to AI disclosure. Caroline Giegerich, IAB Vice President of AI, said: “Trust is everything between a brand and its customers, and being honest about AI is part of earning it.” Read IAB’s Framework Version 2 announcement and assess disclosure for the specific creative and use.

Do’s and don’ts at a glance

Do Don’t
Connect each interaction to a campaign goal and a useful user action. Make interaction necessary to identify the brand or understand the proposition.
Prioritize a fast first display and defer optional, heavier features. Front-load large media or code that delays the visual start.
Test the packaged creative in its actual serving context and coordinate with ad operations. Assume a local preview proves the ad will work in every browser, app, or publisher environment.
Confirm current partner support and specifications for each placement. Treat MRAID, SHARC, or an old format document as a guarantee of universal support or current limits.
Monitor viewability, suitability, fraud, privacy, and user experience alongside campaign outcomes. Use viewability alone as proof of attention or business effect, or treat brand safety as a one-time checkbox.
