RGB LED is a significant development in premium LCD TVs, but it is too soon to call it the future of television. Its red, green, and blue backlight can produce exceptionally wide color, yet it remains a backlit LCD—not a self-emissive display like OLED. The best choice depends on the exact TV’s measured performance, price, size, and your room.
What is an RGB LED TV?
An LCD television uses a panel to control light, while a backlight supplies that light. An RGB LED TV replaces or develops the conventional backlight with red, green, and blue LEDs, giving the set more direct control over the colors illuminating the LCD. The image still passes through an LCD panel; the LEDs are not individual picture pixels. Samsung’s Micro RGB explainer describes Micro RGB as a backlight technology and distinguishes it from self-emissive Micro LED.
Names vary by manufacturer: Samsung calls its system Micro RGB, Hisense uses RGB Mini LED, LG calls its line Micro RGB evo, and TCL uses RGB-Mini LED. Those names do not establish that the products use identical hardware or deliver equivalent results. Samsung’s distinction between Micro RGB LEDs under 100 microns and RGB Mini LED sources it describes as typically 100–400 microns is its own terminology, not a universal industry standard.

RGB backlighting can improve color reproduction and may allow more precise control than a conventional LED backlight. But the TV’s LCD panel, optical design, local dimming, image processing, and calibration also shape what viewers see. More color capability alone does not settle the overall picture-quality question.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key structural difference is black level. An OLED pixel emits its own light and can turn off individually. An RGB LED TV still shines light through an LCD panel, with dimming controlled across backlight zones rather than at every LCD pixel. That means RGB color coverage should not be taken as proof of OLED-like blacks or freedom from blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Samsung explains this distinction in its Micro RGB guide.
RGB backlights and Micro LED are also different technologies. Micro LED is self-emissive at the pixel level; Micro RGB is a backlight for an LCD display. Similar names do not mean the two work the same way.

How wide is RGB LED’s color advantage?
Wide color is the clearest selling point, but both certification claims and independent measurements need context. Samsung says its 2026 Micro RGB TVs achieve 100% BT.2020 color area with VDE certification, while LG’s 2025 announcement says Intertek certified Micro RGB evo for 100% coverage of BT.2020, DCI-P3, and Adobe RGB. Those are brand-reported certification claims, not evidence that every RGB LED television achieves the same coverage or that the sets are otherwise equal. See Samsung’s lineup announcement and LG’s announcement.

| TV tested | BT.2020 gamut reported by Tom’s Guide | Evidence type |
|---|---|---|
| Hisense UR9 | About 93% | Reviewer measurement reported by Tom’s Guide |

| Sony Bravia 7 II | About 87% | Reviewer measurement reported by Tom’s Guide |
The results show why a technology label is not a substitute for model-level testing: measured color gamut varied across these sets. The figures also do not, by themselves, establish color accuracy, black-level performance, brightness in real scenes, or value. Tom’s Guide’s July 2026 testing report is the source for these measurements.
Is RGB LED becoming a major TV category?
It is expanding beyond a single manufacturer, but market growth is a forecast—not proof that RGB will replace OLED or other LCD TVs. In June 2026, Omdia projected RGB TV shipments to rise from 1.1 million sets in 2026 to 7.1 million in 2030, and forecast the category would make up 13% of global TV revenue by 2030. It also forecast 2.0 million shipments in North America by 2030, the largest regional total in its outlook. These projections may change and are not observed future sales. Omdia’s June 2026 release gives the figures and describes RGB LED as a major market transformation.

Manufacturer announcements point to a broadening set of products: Hisense announced UR9 and UR8 RGB Mini LED series and a 116UXS flagship that adds cyan to its RGB system; LG announced Micro RGB evo; and TCL announced the RM9L. These announcements establish product direction, not equivalent independent test results or availability in every country. See Hisense’s CES 2026 announcement and TCL’s announcement.

Should you wait to buy an RGB LED TV?
Wait if a specific announced model offers a feature you need and you can verify its local release, price, and independent testing. Otherwise, do not postpone a purchase merely because RGB LED is forecast to grow. The available evidence supports treating it as a promising premium LCD option, not a guaranteed successor to OLED or conventional Mini LED. Choose based on your room, budget, preferred size, and the performance of the exact models under consideration.
