In one laboratory prototype, ultraviolet light writes an image onto a specially coated film, and heat erases it by restoring the dye’s color. This is not ordinary paper that can be printed with any light: it is a research material built from titanium dioxide nanocrystals, dye, and a cellulose-based stabilizer.
How does rewritable paper work?
The 2014 prototype studied by Wenshou Wang, Ning Xie, Le He, and Yadong Yin is a composite film. Its key ingredients are titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystals, a redox dye, and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). Each has a role in making the image appear, remain visible, and then disappear.
- TiO2 nanocrystals act as a photocatalyst when exposed to ultraviolet light.
- The dye changes color state during the reaction. In the methylene-blue version, the blue dye becomes a colorless reduced form.
- HEC helps stabilize the reduced dye and slows oxygen from reaching it, delaying the return to its colored state.
When UV exposure triggers the photocatalytic reaction, the exposed areas bleach. The contrast between those areas and the still-colored background forms the image. No fresh ink is added for each new image; the writing comes from changing the dye already in the film.

For this particular research material, yes—with important qualifications. The study used a laboratory 365-nm UV lamp to write patterns. Heating the film in air promotes oxidation of the reduced dye, bringing back its color and erasing the image. The authors’ demonstration used a 115°C heat treatment.

Those figures describe the researchers’ experimental setup, not consumer instructions. The study does not establish safe home-use procedures or show that ordinary paper will respond the same way. The material is a coated laboratory film, and its UV and heat requirements should not be treated as a recommendation for trying the process yourself.
How long does the image last, and how many times can it be reused?
In the researchers’ reported tests, printed images remained legible for over three days under ambient conditions. HEC helps explain why: it slows oxygen diffusion and stabilizes the bleached dye, rather than allowing it to recolor immediately.

Wang and colleagues reported more than 20 write–erase cycles without significant loss in contrast or resolution. Their article’s abstract summarizes the result as printing with ultraviolet light and erasing by heating over 20 cycles without significant loss in contrast and resolution. These are results from that laboratory study, not independently replicated consumer-product specifications.

Is light-printable rewritable paper a product you can buy?
The cited work describes a research prototype, not an established retail paper product. The UC Riverside Office of Technology Commercialization describes a patented film that uses UV light for printing and heat for erasure, and identifies flexible plastic substrates, signage, and sensing as possible directions. That technology-transfer summary does not establish current retail availability, licensing, or a commercial price.

So “rewritable paper” is a useful shorthand, but in this case it means a paper-like composite film demonstrated in a lab—not a generally available sheet for home printing.

The term also covers products and research systems that work in completely different ways. The writing and erasing mechanism is the key distinction.

There are research approaches beyond the UV film, too. A 2026 EcoMat paper describes water-based inks made with food-grade dyes and sodium alginate that are erased using mild alkaline solutions. That chemistry is separate from the TiO2-assisted, heat-erased prototype.

What the research does—and does not—show
- It demonstrates a writing mechanism: UV-activated photocatalysis changes the dye’s color state without adding ink at the time of writing.
- It reports repeat use and image persistence: the authors observed more than 20 cycles and legibility beyond three days under their test conditions.
- It does not establish a consumer product: the cited sources do not provide a current retail listing, price, mass-production status, or consumer-use safety instructions for this exact film.
- It does not quantify environmental savings: reusability alone is not enough to establish a lifecycle benefit without comparative impact data.
