Yes, you can use Revolut as a bank account in the UK, but not every customer is at the same stage of Revolut’s banking transition. Revolut Bank UK Ltd began launching current accounts in March 2026. Some customers now have bank accounts with FSCS-eligible deposits, while others remain e-money customers during the staged migration. The right choice depends on your actual account entity, expected fees, need for cash or branches, and the protection attached to each product.

What “use Revolut as a bank account” means in the UK

Revolut has historically provided UK customers with e-money accounts. Those accounts can support everyday spending and transfers, but customer money is safeguarded separately from the provider’s operating funds rather than covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) as a bank deposit.

On 11 March 2026, Revolut announced that the Prudential Regulation Authority had lifted mobilisation restrictions and approved the launch of Revolut Bank UK Ltd. Revolut described this as the beginning of a gradual rollout of current accounts and a transition for eligible customers; its announcement said existing customers would not experience an immediate change.

Revolut’s UK explanation dated 11 May 2026 says new UK customers are set up with FSCS-protected bank accounts automatically, while some existing customers remain e-money customers during the staged transition. Therefore, “I have Revolut” does not by itself identify your legal provider or protection status.

How to identify your account status

  1. Open the Revolut app and go to the account or personal-details area that identifies the legal entity holding your account.
  2. Read the in-app protection or customer-information notice. Look for whether the account is with Revolut Bank UK Ltd or remains an e-money account.
  3. Check each separate product. A current account, savings product, investment balance and crypto balance may involve different legal entities and different protection rules.
  4. Save the current terms and tariff for your records. Revolut can change plan terms, and migration timing is not necessarily the same for every customer.

Revolut and a traditional bank: the comparison at a glance

“Traditional bank” is not one product. A high-street current account, an app-only bank account and a specialist account can have different charges, eligibility rules and deposit licences. Use the table as a checklist, then compare Revolut with the named account you are actually considering.

Question Revolut UK Specific traditional-bank account
Recurring account cost Standard has no subscription fee. Plus, Premium and Ultra charge subscriptions. Use that bank’s current tariff; there is no universal traditional-bank price.
Foreign exchange Plan rules, exchange rates and fair-use charges apply. Standard’s fee page describes a £1,000 monthly fair-usage example, after which a 1% fee applies; verify the current terms and what transactions count. Check the account’s exchange rate, markup, weekend policy and allowance.
International payments Supported transfers and currencies depend on the route and plan. Intermediary banks can deduct charges. Check outgoing, receiving and intermediary-bank charges for the currencies you use.
Cash withdrawals Free limits depend on the plan; the Standard schedule describes a fee above its allowance. Check the bank’s own and third-party ATM rules, including overseas use.
Cash deposits Confirm whether your intended cash-deposit method is available in the app and current terms. Check deposit facilities, limits and whether a branch or agent is required.
Branches and in-person service Service is primarily digital; confirm the support channels and opening hours you need. Branch availability, appointment options and telephone support vary by provider.
Payments and account features Revolut describes UK account features, multi-currency balances and international transfers. Verify direct debits and other functions in the live terms. Verify the named account’s payment, card, cash, savings and borrowing features.
Deposit protection Eligible deposits with Revolut Bank UK Ltd can fall under FSCS protection. E-money accounts use safeguarding instead. Confirm the authorised firm and whether other brands share its banking licence.
Eligibility Depends on UK residency, identity checks, product and migration status. Depends on the bank’s residency, identity, income, credit and account rules.

Revolut fees: “free” means free subscription, not free every transaction

Standard plan

Revolut’s UK Standard plan has no subscription fee. The published schedule describes free home-country bank-transfer top-ups, local payments and euro payments within SEPA. It also lists charges for some non-UK/EEA or commercial card top-ups and a fee for ATM withdrawals above the plan allowance.

The same schedule says Revolut applies an exchange rate and adds a fee when one applies. It gives a £1,000 Standard monthly fair-usage limit for the combined exchange example on that page; after that limit, a 1% fee applies. Treat this as a plan-specific example, not a permanent universal rule: check the current Standard terms and the app’s quote before exchanging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revolut says applicable charges are shown before you confirm a transaction in the app. International payments can also be reduced by intermediary-bank deductions, which are separate from Revolut’s displayed fee.

Paid plans

UK fee schedules published on 11 December 2025, with the existing-customer versions effective from 13 February 2026, list these subscription prices:

Plan Monthly price Annual price Qualification
Plus £3.99 £40 Published UK price; confirm the current tariff and included allowances.
Premium £7.99 £80 Published UK price; confirm the current tariff and included allowances.
Ultra £55 £540 Published UK price; confirm the current tariff and included allowances.

Paying monthly for Plus would total £47.88 over 12 months, compared with the published £40 annual price. Premium would total £95.88 monthly or £80 annually, while Ultra would total £660 monthly or £540 annually. These are arithmetic comparisons of the published prices, not a recommendation to choose an annual commitment. Check cancellation, renewal and any introductory terms before paying upfront.

A paid tier only makes financial sense when the allowances and benefits you will actually use exceed the subscription. Add the annual subscription, card costs, exchange charges, ATM charges and transfer fees for your expected month or year. Do not count a benefit merely because it is included if you would not otherwise buy it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to calculate your real monthly cost

  1. Start with the subscription: £0 for Standard or the applicable paid-plan price.
  2. List your normal card spending, cash withdrawals, card top-ups, bank transfers and currency exchanges.
  3. Apply the plan allowance to each category, including any fair-use threshold.
  4. Add fees shown before confirmation and allow for intermediary-bank deductions on international payments.
  5. Repeat the calculation for the named alternative bank using its current tariff, then test a high-use month as well as an average month.

Keep domestic and overseas use separate in your worksheet. A customer who never withdraws cash may care mostly about exchange and transfer pricing; someone paid in cash may care more about deposit access and ATM limits. Include card replacement, extra-card or expedited-service costs only where the relevant provider’s tariff lists them. If a fee is expressed as a percentage, model a realistic transaction rather than assuming the percentage applies to every payment.

Banking status and FSCS protection

What the £120,000 FSCS limit covers

The FSCS says: “On 1 December 2025 the FSCS deposit protection rose to £120,000.” The limit is per eligible person, per authorised firm, for eligible deposits held at a UK-authorised bank, building society or credit union.

The limit follows the authorised banking licence, not simply the brand name. If two brands operate under the same licence, deposits held with both are added together for the £120,000 limit. Check the legal firm shown in the account information before assuming you have a separate allowance.

The FSCS also describes qualifying temporary high balances of up to £1.4 million protected for six months, subject to its rules. This is a specific statutory category, not an automatic extension for every large balance or every type of payment. Keep evidence of the event creating the balance and check the FSCS conditions if you expect to rely on this category.

Safeguarding is different from FSCS compensation

When money remains in an e-money account, Revolut says customer funds are kept separate from its own operating funds under safeguarding requirements. Safeguarding is not the same statement as FSCS deposit compensation. In a failure, the legal process, timing and amount recoverable can differ from an FSCS claim on an eligible bank deposit.

That distinction matters when deciding where to hold an emergency fund or a balance needed for rent and bills. Do not infer protection from a Revolut logo, a card, or the fact that a balance appears beside a bank account in the app. Identify the entity and product first.

Products that may sit outside Revolut Bank UK Ltd

Revolut’s protection explanation says crypto, stocks and commodities are provided through separate entities and are not covered by Revolut Bank UK Ltd’s FSCS deposit protection. Some savings products are held with partner banks and have separate protection arrangements. Never label every balance visible in the app as FSCS-protected without identifying the product, legal provider and applicable scheme.

Questions to ask about protection

  • Is this balance an eligible deposit, safeguarded e-money, an investment or a crypto holding?
  • Which legal entity accepts or holds the money?
  • Is that entity authorised in the UK for the relevant service?
  • Does a partner bank hold the savings balance, and is the partner’s licence shared with another brand I use?
  • Will my balances with another account or brand count toward the same £120,000 limit?

Features: where Revolut may fit and where verification matters

Multi-currency spending and transfers

Revolut describes multi-currency balances and international transfers as core account capabilities. These can be useful if you regularly receive, hold or spend more than one currency. The practical cost still depends on the exchange-rate policy, fair-use threshold, transfer route and any intermediary deductions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before travelling, check whether the destination currency is supported, whether an exchange is treated as card spending or a separate conversion, and whether the plan has a weekend or fair-use rule. For a large transfer, confirm the recipient details, expected arrival route and whether the recipient’s bank may deduct a charge. A displayed “fee” may not be the total cost received by the beneficiary.

Everyday UK payments

Revolut describes UK current-account features, but you should verify the exact functions enabled on your account, including direct debits, standing orders, salary payments, bill payments and card controls. A feature shown in marketing material may depend on your legal entity, plan or migration stage.

If you are switching a main account, move one payment at a time where practical. Confirm the first salary credit, test a small transfer, and leave enough money in the old account for pending direct debits until the new arrangement has worked through a complete payment cycle.

Cash, branches and human support

If you deposit cash, withdraw large amounts, need a cashier, or prefer face-to-face problem solving, check the specific provider rather than relying on the label “traditional.” Some banks offer branches or cash services; others are largely digital. Revolut’s service is primarily app-based, so confirm its support channels, escalation route and hours before making it your only account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also consider access during a lost or replaced phone, a failed passcode, a damaged card or a blocked transaction. Ask how identity is restored, whether another device can be used and how urgent card or payment problems are escalated. These practical details can matter more than a small difference in a monthly fee.

Savings and borrowing

Compare the actual savings account, overdraft or loan product—not the current-account brand. Check the provider, interest-rate conditions, access restrictions, credit assessment, fees and protection status. A savings product inside an app can be held by a partner bank and may not share the current account’s legal protection.

An overdraft or loan also changes the comparison: review the eligibility decision, representative rate, arranged and unarranged charges, repayment rules and whether using the product affects your planned cash flow. Do not assume that a current account’s availability means credit is guaranteed.

Eligibility, onboarding and migration practicalities

Both Revolut and a named bank can require identity checks, proof of address, residency information and other eligibility evidence. A successful app registration does not guarantee access to every feature. Account type, immigration or residence status, age, sanctions screening and product-specific checks can affect what is offered.

Existing Revolut customers should not close an older account merely because a bank launch was announced. Migration is staged, and Revolut said the March launch did not immediately change existing customers. Wait for the in-app notice identifying your entity and protection status, then read the updated terms. If you have multiple Revolut products, confirm whether each has migrated or remains with a separate entity.

How to compare Revolut with one named bank

Use this process when you are deciding whether to switch, keep a second account or add a travel account.

  1. Choose the exact alternative. Record the bank, account name, eligibility rules and tariff version. Do not compare Revolut with an imaginary average traditional bank.
  2. Map your usage. Estimate monthly card spending, cash withdrawals, cash deposits, domestic transfers, international transfers, currency exchange and recurring payments.
  3. Price both accounts. Include subscription or account fees, card charges, ATM fees, exchange markups, fair-use charges, transfer fees and possible intermediary deductions.
  4. Check operational requirements. Confirm whether each account supports your salary, direct debits, cash needs, overdraft requirement and preferred customer-service channel.
  5. Verify legal protection. Identify the authorised firm, whether the account is a bank or e-money account, which products use partner institutions and whether another brand shares the licence.
  6. Test edge cases. Price a month with unusually high foreign spending, a large cash withdrawal and an international payment. A “free” average month can become expensive when you exceed an allowance.
  7. Decide the role. Choose a main account, secondary spending account or complement based on the tasks each provider handles reliably.

Which account role suits different users?

Revolut as your main account

This can be reasonable if your account has migrated to Revolut Bank UK Ltd, its FSCS status meets your requirements, your routine payments work, and you are comfortable with app-first support. Before moving your salary and direct debits, verify those functions on your own account and keep a recovery route for a lost phone or locked app.

Maintain a small contingency plan while testing the account. Keep alternative contact details, download statements when needed, and know how to obtain help if the app or card is unavailable. These are sensible operational precautions for any app-led account, not evidence that one provider is inherently unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revolut as a secondary spending account

A secondary account can isolate travel or discretionary spending from household bills. Price the exchange, ATM and transfer rules for your destinations, and keep only the balance appropriate to that purpose. Protection still depends on the legal entity and product, so a secondary label does not remove the need to check status.

Revolut as a complement to a bank account

Keeping both can provide operational redundancy: one account for established payments, cash or borrowing and another for multi-currency spending or app-based controls. The trade-off is managing two tariffs, security processes and protection limits. Track which institution holds each balance and avoid assuming two brands give two FSCS allowances when they share a licence.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every Revolut customer has a bank account: check your entity and migration notice in the app.
  • Treating Standard as cost-free: subscription-free does not remove ATM, exchange, card-top-up or transfer charges.
  • Using the £1,000 figure without checking context: it is the Standard fair-usage example described by Revolut and may change with plan terms.
  • Counting app balances as one protected deposit: crypto, stocks, commodities and some savings products use separate entities or partner banks.
  • Comparing with “a traditional bank”: name the exact account and read its tariff, eligibility and licence information.
  • Ignoring intermediary banks: an international transfer can arrive short because another bank deducted a charge.
  • Moving everything immediately: test salary payments, direct debits, cash access and support before closing an established account.
  • Assuming brand names determine FSCS limits: aggregate balances under the same authorised firm.
  • Choosing a paid plan for unused perks: compare the subscription with the benefits you would genuinely purchase or use.
  • Confusing a quoted exchange rate with total cost: include any plan fee, fair-use charge and payment-route deduction.

Bottom line for UK readers

Revolut can be a genuine UK bank account for customers onboarded to Revolut Bank UK Ltd, and a useful e-money spending account for customers still awaiting migration. Its strengths are plan-based digital controls, multi-currency balances and international-transfer features described by Revolut. Its costs depend on usage, and its protection depends on the legal entity and product.

A traditional-bank alternative cannot be judged as one category. Compare Revolut with a named account, calculate your own transaction pattern, verify cash and support requirements, and check the authorised firm before deciding whether Revolut should replace your main account or sit alongside it.

Is Revolut covered by the FSCS?

Eligible deposits held with Revolut Bank UK Ltd can be covered by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible person per authorised firm. E-money balances use safeguarding instead. Crypto, stocks and commodities are provided through separate entities, and some savings products are held with partner banks, so protection depends on the specific product.

Is Revolut Standard really free?

The UK Standard plan has no subscription fee, but transaction charges and limits can still apply. Revolut lists possible ATM, card-top-up, exchange and transfer fees. Its fee page describes a £1,000 monthly Standard fair-use example followed by a 1% fee; check the current terms and the in-app quote before relying on that threshold.

Which is cheaper, Revolut or a traditional bank?

There is no universal answer because traditional-bank tariffs and Revolut costs depend on the provider, plan and transactions. Compare a named account, including account or subscription fees, ATM withdrawals, exchange, card top-ups, international transfers, cash services and any intermediary deductions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Revolut for salary, direct debits and bills?

Revolut describes UK account features, but verify salary payments, direct debits, standing orders and bill payments on your own account. Availability can depend on your legal entity, plan and migration stage. Test important payments before closing an established account.

Does having Revolut and another brand give me two FSCS allowances?

Not necessarily. The £120,000 limit applies per eligible person per authorised firm. Brands operating under the same banking licence are aggregated, so identify the authorised firm rather than counting brand names.

Should Revolut be my main account or a travel account?

That depends on your needs. A migrated bank account may suit a main-account role if routine payments, support and protection meet your requirements. A secondary account can be useful for travel or discretionary spending, while a traditional-bank account may complement it for cash, borrowing or established payments. Price the actual use and verify each product.

The Bottom Line

Revolut is not automatically free, fully banked or FSCS-protected for every UK customer. Check your legal entity, calculate your real transaction costs and compare the exact traditional-bank account before choosing a main or secondary role.
