Maybe—but treat it as a staged decision, not an all-or-nothing leap. Reverse engineering is a specialized skill used across several cybersecurity and software roles, and the available labor data does not establish a separate salary or employment outlook for reverse engineers. First test the work, choose the kind of reverse engineering you mean, and compare your skills and finances with current job postings in your location.
What does a reverse engineer do?
Reverse engineering means inferring how software or a device works from its behavior or construction, rather than relying only on its original documentation or source code. In cybersecurity, tasks can include analyzing malware, examining compiled programs, finding vulnerabilities, investigating embedded devices, or reconstructing a product’s behavior. These specialties are not interchangeable: a job title alone may not reveal what you would do day to day.
Start by collecting current postings for the specialty that interests you. Note the actual tasks, platforms, programming languages, and experience employers request. The work may involve long periods of forming and revising hypotheses from incomplete evidence, then explaining what you found.

It may suit you if you enjoy patient technical investigation, independent learning, and communicating detailed findings. It is less likely to be a good fit if the appeal is mainly the title or an assumed salary premium. Before committing, try a small, authorized exercise: use a purpose-built training binary, trace a function with a debugger, and write a concise explanation of its behavior. Do not analyze software or devices without authorization.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the exercise to assess whether you enjoy both the investigation and the documentation. Record what you learned, which tools you used, and where you got stuck; this gives you something concrete to compare with role requirements and discuss with practitioners.
How can you enter the field?
There is no single required route established by the sources. NIST describes cybersecurity pathways as combinations of different starting points, education, training, and learning experiences. That leaves room to explore a direct transition or an adjacent role while building relevant skills; it does not mean every route is equally accessible or that retraining has a predictable duration or cost.

- Choose a target specialty. Gather postings across two or three related roles, such as malware analysis, vulnerability research, or security engineering. Identify requirements that recur rather than assuming every “reverse engineer” job is the same.
- Try a legal training exercise. Analyze a purpose-built sample, trace a function, and write up the result. Keep the work authorized and benign.
- Compare your evidence with postings. Look for repeated requirements and demonstrate the skills through small projects, technical write-ups, or relevant work experience.
- Talk with practitioners. Ask how much of their working week is reverse engineering and what other responsibilities their role includes.
- Set a decision checkpoint. Move toward a role change only if the work remains engaging, the recurring skill gaps look tractable, and local opportunities and finances make sense.
A 2022 voluntary survey of 93 reverse-engineering learners and practitioners offers a snapshot of learning experiences, not a hiring formula. Of 92 respondents to the question about how they learned, 57 (61.96%) selected self-teaching. That describes respondents’ reported learning routes; it does not show that self-study alone is sufficient to get hired. Participants also mentioned online guides, challenges, textbooks, and tools including IDA/IDA Pro, Ghidra, and GDB. Treat these as possible starting points, not a universal tool checklist.
The survey named Practical Malware Analysis: The Hands-On Guide to Dissecting Malicious Software as a valuable learning book. It may be useful if malware analysis is your target, but it is neither a required qualification nor evidence of current employer preferences.

What jobs use reverse engineering?
Reverse-engineering tasks can appear within cybersecurity and software positions rather than under one standard job title. O*NET’s profile for information security engineers is an adjacent occupational reference, not a count of reverse-engineering jobs. The survey also described a range of professional roles and reported experience with x86/AMD64, x86, and ARM architectures, as well as Windows, Unix-like systems, and Android. Its voluntary sample is useful for orientation but cannot map the whole current job market.

What do salary and job-growth figures say?
There is no distinct reverse-engineer salary or growth figure established by the sources cited here. For context only, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that information security analysts had a median annual wage of $129,180 in 2025. It projects 21% employment growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 14,100 average annual openings over that period. Those figures describe U.S. information security analysts, not reverse engineers, and should not be treated as a forecast of reverse-engineering pay or demand. Actual compensation and opportunities depend on location, experience, and the specific role.

How to decide whether to switch
Compare a direct move into reverse engineering with an adjacent job that uses some of your existing skills while you develop a portfolio. Estimate the opportunity cost of retraining, the likely time before a transition could pay off, and your current versus plausible compensation in your region. The available pathway guidance supports exploring different routes, but it cannot calculate those personal costs or tell you which route is best.
Use a checkpoint rather than making the decision on enthusiasm alone: proceed if you have tested the work, can name the skill gaps that recur in local postings, can build credible evidence for those skills, and have a financial plan you can accept. If those conditions are not yet clear, keep exploring while maintaining your current income or pursuing an adjacent role.
