If Reverie in the Moonlight will not download or start on Nintendo Switch, check the release timing before changing storage or deleting anything. Nintendo’s Canadian product listing gives the digital game a November 19, 2026 release date. A preorder may preload roughly seven days before launch, but Nintendo says play begins only after the release-time software update is available. A pre-release launch failure can therefore be expected rather than a broken console.
After launch, work through Nintendo’s recovery sequence: verify the purchasing Nintendo Account, check Nintendo service status and connectivity, resume the download from User Settings, update the console and game, check for corrupt data, then redownload to system memory if necessary. If the game still fails without the microSD card, the card or its stored data is the likely dividing line; if a system-memory redownload also fails, contact Nintendo Support.
First, determine whether the game is actually playable yet
Before troubleshooting a download or launch error, compare the current date with Nintendo’s listed launch date. Reverie in the Moonlight is listed as a digital Nintendo Switch release scheduled for November 19, 2026. If that date has not arrived, a preorder preload is not the same thing as an unlocked game.

How preorder timing can look like a failure
Nintendo’s eShop guidance says preorder software can preload around seven days before release. The data may appear on the console, while the game remains unavailable to play until Nintendo makes the release-time software update available. In that state, seeing an icon that will not launch, or a title that appears downloaded but remains locked, does not by itself prove that the installation is corrupt.

- On or after release day, connect the console to the internet and try starting the title so it can obtain any required update.
- If the eShop still shows a purchase but no usable game after release, continue with the entitlement and download checks below.
Confirm the purchase and the Nintendo Account that owns it
A digital purchase is tied to the Nintendo Account used at checkout. If the console is being used by a different profile, the game can appear to be missing even though the purchase succeeded.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch user associated with the purchase.
- Check that the eShop balance or payment method was actually charged. A failed or incomplete payment does not create a redownloadable entitlement.
- Open the console’s virtual game cards and look for Reverie in the Moonlight. Nintendo says purchased games appear there and can be redownloaded at no additional cost.
- If the game is listed, select the redownload option and allow the process to complete without launching another title.
If the title was bought by another household member, use that purchaser’s Nintendo Account when checking the virtual game cards. Do not buy the game again merely because it is absent from the HOME Menu for a different user.
Check Nintendo service status and the network connection
A download can stall because Nintendo’s service is unavailable, because the console cannot reach the internet, or because an off-device purchase has not yet synchronized with the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck for an outage first
Nintendo directs users to check its Network Maintenance Information/Operational Status page for posted outages. If maintenance is listed, wait until the service is operational before judging the download or purchase as defective.

Verify the console connection
- Confirm that the Switch reports an active internet connection in its network settings.
- Retry the eShop or the game download after the connection is restored.
- If the purchase was made away from the console, verify that the console meets Nintendo’s requirements for off-device purchases and that the purchasing account is the one being used on the Switch.
A service outage and an account-entitlement problem can produce similar symptoms: no download, a purchase that does not appear, or an icon that cannot start. Resolve the service and account checks before changing storage.
Resume a download that is stuck or paused
Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is running. Close every active game or application before trying to resume Reverie in the Moonlight.
- Save any open game and close the running software from the HOME Menu.
- From the HOME Menu, open User Settings.
- Choose Update Download Progress.
- Return to the HOME Menu and check whether the download resumes.
- If it remains paused, restart the Switch and run Update Download Progress again after the restart.
Give the eShop time to start the transfer
Nintendo advises placing the console in its dock, or connecting AC power on a Switch Lite, and leaving it in sleep mode for up to two hours. This can allow an eShop download to begin or continue without another application competing for the connection.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Repair a game that downloads but will not launch
When the title is past its release date and the entitlement is correct, a launch failure can indicate an outdated system, an incomplete game update, or damaged downloaded data. Use the following order so that less destructive checks happen first.
Install all available updates
- Install the latest Nintendo Switch system update.
- Install the latest update for Reverie in the Moonlight.
- Restart the console after updating, then try launching the game again.
A pre-release copy may specifically need the release-time update before it can start, so updating is important even if the game icon and most of its data are already present.
Run the built-in corrupt-data check
Use the Switch software-management controls to run the console’s Check for Corrupt Data function for the game. Let the check finish before opening another title. If the console identifies damaged data, choose the available redownload or repair option.
Redownload the software
If the corruption check does not clear the launch error, choose Redownload. Nintendo’s recovery guidance treats redownloading as the next step after updating and checking the data. If a redownload command is not available, delete the software and download it again from the purchasing account’s virtual game cards.

Deleting the software removes the installed game files, not the digital entitlement. The game can be downloaded again at no additional cost from the account that purchased it. Do not interrupt the redownload by launching another demanding application.
Test whether the microSD card is causing the failure
If the game is installed on a microSD card, isolate that card from the diagnosis. Nintendo’s launch-error guidance specifically recommends removing the card and downloading the software directly to system memory when a card may be involved.
Run the system-memory test
- Close all running software.
- Remove the microSD card according to Nintendo’s console instructions.
- Use the purchasing account’s virtual game card to download Reverie in the Moonlight to system memory.
- Install the latest system and game updates if prompted.
- Try launching the title from the system-memory installation.
If the game launches from system memory, the failure follows the microSD storage path rather than the game entitlement. Nintendo’s guidance is to format or replace the microSD card, or continue using system memory. Formatting or replacing the card should be treated as a storage-recovery operation: follow the console’s prompts and keep any data you need before proceeding.

If the same failure occurs with no microSD card and a fresh system-memory download, the card is not the only plausible cause. Continue to escalation rather than repeatedly formatting storage.

What “Nintendo Switch-compatible microSD card” means here
The relevant requirement is compatibility with Nintendo Switch. The cited Nintendo guidance does not endorse a particular brand or capacity, so there is no supported brand recommendation to apply to this troubleshooting step. The useful test is whether the problem disappears when the software is installed in system memory.

When to contact Nintendo Support
Escalate after the official recovery path has been completed: the title is past its release date, the purchasing account shows the entitlement, Nintendo service is operational, the system and game are updated, corrupt data has been checked, and a fresh download to system memory still will not launch.
When contacting support, describe the exact symptom—stalled download, missing virtual game card, launch error, or corruption warning—and state whether the same result occurred without the microSD card. That distinction tells support whether the failure followed removable storage or remained after a clean system-memory installation.
