Buy the original Nintendo Switch version if you already own it or want the lowest-commitment way to play. Nintendo lists that version as supported on Nintendo Switch 2, with game behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition only if you specifically want Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support and the smoother presentation Nintendo describes as an improved frame rate.
The two editions contain the same game. Nintendo explicitly says there are no differences in game content, so the Switch 2 Edition does not add a story, stages, plushies, items, or another campaign. Existing owners can buy the digital upgrade pack instead of purchasing the game again.

Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support
Mouse support is a hardware-specific input option. It requires Joy-Con 2 controllers and a Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes the frame-rate change qualitatively: the improved frame rate provides smoother gameplay and visuals. The published listing does not state a numerical target, frame-rate range, resolution comparison, or performance mode. You should therefore expect a smoother presentation, but not assume a particular number of frames per second or a specific resolution.
Does the Switch 2 version have new content?
No. Nintendo explicitly states, “There are no differences in game content.” That means the Switch 2 Edition is not a content expansion or remaster with additional chapters. The available official description gives no new story scenes, stages, enemies, plushie types, collectible categories, items, or endings for the Switch 2 Edition.

Both editions represent the same underlying game: scary monsters attack Tete’s dreams while stuffed animals defend him. Tete cannot fight directly. Instead, you deploy plushies with different combat roles, including short-range, long-range, and support functions. Nintendo lists 40 types of plushies and more than 100 items to collect and combine strategically between attacks.
Does the original Switch game run on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo’s compatibility listing marks Reverie in the Moonlight as Supported on Nintendo Switch 2 and says, “Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” You do not need the Switch 2 Edition simply to access the game on the newer console. Playing the original version through backward compatibility gives you the Switch version’s behavior. The Switch 2 Edition is the one to choose when you want the separately advertised mouse-sensor support and improved frame rate.
Can you upgrade a Switch copy?

On an original Nintendo Switch
The standard Switch version is the relevant purchase. The Switch 2 Edition’s defining features depend on newer hardware, while Nintendo’s published information does not describe a separate content package that would improve the experience on an original console. If you own a Switch Lite, Nintendo notes that the experience may differ on that system. The game remains single-player and supports handheld play, but the Lite’s integrated controls and display are not identical to a detachable Joy-Con setup.

Nintendo lists 40 plushie types. That number describes the available roster, not 40 additional characters exclusive to Switch 2.
Items and combinations
More than 100 items can be collected and combined strategically between attacks. The between-wave preparation is therefore part of the game’s decision-making: you are not only reacting to monsters, but also arranging the tools and plushie roles that will handle the next threat. The same roster and item pool apply to both editions because Nintendo says their content does not differ.

That limits how precisely the upgrade can be quantified. The defensible claim is that Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition has an improved frame rate and supports the Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor. It would be inaccurate to turn that wording into a promised 60 fps mode, a particular resolution, or a measured reduction in loading time.
Is the Switch 2 Edition worth it?
It is worth considering when presentation is a priority
If you are sensitive to uneven motion or want the smoothest presentation Nintendo offers for this game, the improved frame rate is a legitimate reason to select the Switch 2 Edition. The benefit is especially straightforward for someone buying a Switch 2 copy from scratch, because there is no existing purchase to weigh against the upgrade cost.
It is worth considering when you want mouse-style input
