Reverie in the Moonlight has a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, but Nintendo has not announced it as a blanket free upgrade or cross-buy title. Owners of the Nintendo Switch version are offered an upgrade-pack route. The Switch 2 Edition adds Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support and an improved frame rate, while Nintendo says the game content is unchanged. The original Switch release is also marked as supported on Switch 2.
Save Data Cloud support is listed for the Switch version when you have Nintendo Switch Online. How the Switch 2 upgrade works
Nintendo presents two related products: the original Nintendo Switch game and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. For someone who already owns the Switch release, the relevant product is the upgrade pack. Nintendo’s description says, “This content requires the following to play: Reverie in the Moonlight.” It then explains that the pack upgrades the Nintendo Switch game to the Switch 2 Edition.

If you already own the Switch version
- Use the Nintendo Account that owns the Nintendo Switch version of Reverie in the Moonlight.
- Check the Nintendo eShop listing for the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack rather than assuming the standard game listing will change automatically.
- Confirm that the original game is available on the account or console before attempting to use the pack; Nintendo states that the original game is required to play the upgrade.
- After the Switch 2 Edition becomes available, install the original game and the upgrade content on the Switch 2 system, then launch the upgraded edition from the account that owns the entitlement.
Nintendo lists November 19, 2026 as the release date for the upgrade-pack content. Availability, pricing, and any regional eShop conditions can change, so check the listing for your Nintendo Account region when the date arrives.
If you do not own the Switch version
The upgrade pack is not a substitute for the base game. Nintendo’s prerequisite statement means that buying the pack alone does not give you a playable copy of Reverie in the Moonlight. You would need the Nintendo Switch game through the purchase route Nintendo makes available in your region, or a Switch 2 Edition purchase if Nintendo lists that as a separate product.
Is the Switch 2 upgrade free?
Nintendo has not advertised a blanket free-upgrade promise in the listings covered here. The official purchase model is an upgrade pack that requires the existing Nintendo Switch game. Because no price or “free upgrade” statement is provided, do not assume that owning the Switch version automatically unlocks every Switch 2 feature at no cost.

- Edition upgrade: the Switch 2 Edition supplies the listed technical enhancements through the upgrade-pack route.
- Cost: the reviewed Nintendo information does not establish whether the upgrade pack is free, paid, or subject to a regional price.
Until Nintendo publishes a price or a specific free-upgrade policy for your market, the accurate expectation is that an upgrade-pack transaction may be required in addition to owning the original game.
What the Switch 2 Edition adds
Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support
The Switch 2 Edition supports the Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor, allowing a Joy-Con 2 controller to be used as a mouse. This is a control option rather than a new story mode, level set, or other content package. You can therefore treat the feature as an input-method improvement for players who prefer mouse-like pointing or movement when the game supports that style of control.
The listing does not say that Joy-Con 2 controllers are required to play. The feature is described as support for the mouse sensor, so the practical benefit depends on whether you own Joy-Con 2 controllers and whether that control method suits your play style.
Improved frame rate
Nintendo also says that the Switch 2 Edition has an improved frame rate that provides smoother gameplay and visuals. No frame-rate target, resolution number, performance mode, or independent benchmark is provided in the official material reviewed. It is therefore safer to describe this as Nintendo’s qualitative improvement claim, not as a guaranteed frame-per-second figure.

No new game content
Nintendo explicitly states, “There are no differences in game content.” The Switch 2 Edition should consequently be understood as a technical and control upgrade. Do not buy it expecting extra chapters, characters, locations, quests, endings, or other additions unless a later Nintendo announcement says otherwise.
Can you transfer your save to Switch 2?
Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support for the Nintendo Switch version. The listing also says that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Save Data Cloud backup. That gives eligible subscribers a way to store and retrieve the game’s save data through Nintendo’s cloud service.
However, Save Data Cloud is not the same wording as cross-save. The pages reviewed do not use the term “cross-save,” do not describe cross-progression between separate copies, and do not provide a game-specific guarantee that a save created on one system will automatically appear in another edition. The careful answer is therefore: cloud backup is listed; guaranteed cross-save is not explicitly promised.
A cautious cloud-save workflow
If you want to move your progress, use Nintendo’s normal cloud-backup process rather than assuming that the Switch 2 Edition will detect the old save automatically:

- On the original Switch, sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the game and has the relevant save.
- Make sure that account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, because Nintendo requires membership for Save Data Cloud backup.
- Open the game’s save-data cloud controls in the Nintendo Switch system software and back up the current save. Wait for the upload to finish before closing the game or putting the console away.
- On Switch 2, sign in with the same Nintendo Account, install the compatible game or Switch 2 Edition, and open the system’s Save Data Cloud controls.
- Download the available cloud save, then launch the game and check that your expected progress is present.
Menu names and prompts can vary with system-software updates. The steps above describe the general Nintendo cloud-backup sequence, not a Nintendo guarantee that every save will transfer between the original edition and the Switch 2 Edition.
If the save does not appear
- Verify that both consoles use the same Nintendo Account. A different user profile can have a different save and cloud-storage record.
- Check that the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active on the account used for backup.
- Confirm that the original console completed its upload; a save that never reached the cloud cannot be downloaded.
- Look for a newer or older cloud copy before downloading, because downloading can replace the local save on the destination system.
- If the game still does not recognize the data, stop making additional progress on either copy and consult Nintendo’s current support instructions. The product listing does not provide a title-specific recovery promise.
Is Reverie in the Moonlight cross-buy?
Nintendo does not call Reverie in the Moonlight cross-buy. Cross-buy normally means that one purchase automatically grants the corresponding versions on multiple systems or editions. The documented Nintendo route here is narrower: own the Nintendo Switch game, then use the separate Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.
That means you should not assume that buying the Switch version automatically grants a standalone Switch 2 Edition license, or that buying a Switch 2 Edition automatically gives a second copy for another account. Nintendo’s pages reviewed do not state either entitlement. The safest description is upgrade-pack support for existing owners, not an advertised blanket cross-buy program.

Which option should you choose?
You already own the game and only need to play on Switch 2
Start with the original version. Nintendo marks it as supported on Switch 2, so basic access does not depend on buying the upgraded edition. If you want the mouse-sensor option or the improved frame-rate presentation, evaluate the upgrade pack when it is available.

You care about smoother performance
The Switch 2 Edition is the relevant version because Nintendo specifically attributes the improved frame rate to it. Remember that Nintendo does not publish a numerical frame-rate target in the listing, so the improvement cannot be evaluated from an official frames-per-second specification.
You want mouse-style controls
You need the Switch 2 Edition’s Joy-Con 2 mouse-sensor support and compatible Joy-Con 2 hardware. The feature is optional in the sense that Nintendo does not state that Joy-Con 2 controllers are mandatory for the game.
You are deciding whether to buy before moving consoles
Buy with the save limitation in mind. Save Data Cloud is available to Nintendo Switch Online members, but Nintendo has not promised automatic cross-save or cross-progression for this title. Back up the original save before changing systems and verify the destination copy before deleting anything from the old console.

Nintendo lists November 19, 2026 for the Switch 2 Edition upgrade-pack release. The estimated download size is 550 MB for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 listings. Nintendo notes that the estimate may change before release, so leave additional free storage rather than planning around the number as a fixed requirement.
Before purchasing, check three details on the eShop page for your region: whether the product is the upgrade pack or the full Switch 2 Edition, whether the original game is attached to the Nintendo Account you intend to use, and what price Nintendo displays at checkout. None of those regional transaction details is established by the product descriptions summarized here.
