To retry a specific failed draft without consuming a newer queue item, give the workflow a separate targeted-revision path. It should load the requested draft by ID or file path, then reuse the worker’s validation and publishing logic without polling or advancing the queue.
Why a normal queue retry can pick the wrong draft
A queue-driven worker typically polls for the next available record before validating, transforming, and publishing it. If a draft needs repair after its original run, starting that consumer again may select a different, newer item. The worker is doing its normal job, but it is not necessarily retrying the failed draft.
Uray Febri’s September 30, 2026 article proposes separating queue polling from the processing engine so operators can choose the input explicitly. The proposal is an architectural pattern, not documentation for a tested or publicly available package. Read the article on DEV Community.

How the two invocation modes differ
| Mode | Input selection | Queue access | Processing logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queue consumption | The next available queue item | Polls the queue; normal consumption may advance its position | Should use shared validation and publishing logic |
| Targeted revision | A specifically identified draft or file path | Does not query the upstream queue in the proposed design | Should use the same validation and publishing logic |
The article illustrates the distinction with --mode=consume --queue=main and --mode=revision --target=drafts/SRC-WFREVONLY27.md. These are illustrative commands, not verified commands for an actual system. No performance, reliability, or cost comparison is provided.

- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
What a targeted revision run should do
- Load the selected draft. Resolve the supplied identifier or path directly from the repository or object store, rather than asking the queue for another record.
- Validate it. Run the same syntactic and semantic checks used by the queue-driven path.
- Transform metadata carefully. Apply the normal transformations without generating new sequential IDs as a side effect of retrying.
- Publish the result. Send the rendered artifact to the publishing destination through the shared processing logic.
Keeping queue selection separate from processing makes the target explicit while reducing the risk that the two entry points drift into different validation or rendering behavior. Sharing that logic is the author’s design rationale; it is not proof that a particular implementation is idempotent or produces identical results under every condition.
Protect queue state and verify the artifact
In the proposed design, a revision run does not query the upstream queue, so it should leave queue pointers untouched. If validation fails, the described behavior is to report the error without changing queue offsets or creating orphaned downstream records. These are intended behaviors, not independently confirmed guarantees.

After a successful run, inspect the changed artifact in a local build directory or preview environment before treating the revision as complete. Verify the content and metadata that matter to your publishing workflow; a successful process exit alone does not establish that the intended draft was rendered correctly.

Implementation checks before enabling targeted retries
- Require an explicit target for revision mode, and fail clearly if the identifier or path does not resolve to one draft.
- Keep queue polling out of the revision entry point; do not merely pass a target to a consumer that still polls for work.
- Reuse validators, transformations, and rendering code while keeping queue-selection behavior separate.
- Check that metadata transformations do not allocate fresh sequential IDs just because a draft is being retried.
- Confirm how validation errors are reported and inspect the queue state and rendered artifact in your own environment.
