For Stuff contributor Craig Grannell, the Retroid Pocket Nova feels like an end-game retro handheld—but that is a personal verdict, not a promise that it will suit every player or replace every future device. Its strongest case is specific: a 4:3 AMOLED screen, physical controls, and reported performance that reaches into PS2-era emulation. If you mainly play widescreen games or need long sessions away from a charger, the fit is less clear.

What makes the Nova an end-game handheld for some players?

The Nova is built around a 4.5-inch, 4:3 AMOLED display, a format well suited to many classic systems. Retroid lists the panel at 960p and 120Hz, paired with Android 13 and physical controls. That combination lets one device cover classic handheld and console libraries alongside Android games and emulators, though the experience depends on the software and game setup.

Grannell wrote in Stuff, “The Nova really is an end-game handheld – at least for me.” He points to the screen, flat back, controls, and battery experience as reasons it works for his use. His piece is an opinion feature, not a review, and he does not claim that buying the Nova will end anyone else’s interest in handhelds. Read Grannell’s account at Stuff.

How well does it handle retro games and PS2?

Reviewers describe strong performance for high-end retro emulation, including PS2-class systems, but their comments are observations rather than compatibility guarantees or published benchmark results. Time Extension reviewer Nick Rowan wrote, “For every system up to and including the PS2, this device is almost perfect.” That is his assessment, not evidence that every game runs flawlessly. Where the Nova’s 4:3 design becomes a compromise

Widescreen games use less of the display

A 4:3 screen suits many older systems, but widescreen Switch and PC games can appear small on it, according to Time Extension. If modern widescreen play is a major priority, the Nova’s defining screen choice can feel like a limitation rather than an advantage.

Controls and comfort depend on the game

Time Extension found the plastic body comfortable and the D-pad precise, but reported hand cramping during extended twin-stick FPS sessions. The review also called the trigger pivot awkward and noted that a player’s palm can muffle the speakers. Retro Dodo observed that the sticks sit high enough to potentially snag. These are reviewer findings, not measurements of every player’s experience. See Retro Dodo’s review.

Fan noise and demanding sessions

Grannell described fan whine and said he considered the fan unnecessary for the games the Nova targets. Retro Dodo says battery life needs managing during demanding, high-end emulation. Neither source establishes a universal runtime figure, so expect battery demands to vary with workload rather than relying on a single hours-of-play estimate.

Who should consider the Pocket Nova?

  • Good fit: You prioritize a 4:3 display for classic games, want physical controls, and value an AMOLED panel in a compact device.
  • Consider the trade-offs: You expect to play widescreen Switch or PC titles often, spend long sessions using both sticks, or need dependable battery duration during demanding emulation.
  • Compare alternatives: You want to spend less and are comfortable with an LCD panel and possible tuning for some higher-end systems.
