Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want one system for handheld, tabletop and television play, access to compatible Nintendo Switch games, and a supported path to current Nintendo software. Choose a dedicated retro handheld if you mainly want a small, handheld-only device for classic game formats and are comfortable checking compatibility and arranging lawful game files yourself.

These are different product categories rather than direct equivalents. A Switch 2 is a current hybrid console with Nintendo’s software ecosystem. A device such as the ANBERNIC RG35XX is a Linux-based retro handheld built around emulation and removable storage. Neither is automatically better for every portable player, and no independent head-to-head performance or battery test is established.

The short answer

If your priority is… Better fit Why
Current Nintendo games and a large first-party ecosystem Nintendo Switch 2 It is Nintendo’s current hybrid platform and supports compatible Switch games.
Playing on a television as well as in your hands Nintendo Switch 2 It supports handheld, tabletop and TV modes.
A small device dedicated to classic formats Retro handheld Its design and software are focused on emulation and portable retro play.
Simple access to purchased modern games Nintendo Switch 2 Games come through Nintendo’s supported retail and digital channels.
Using your own legally obtained retro files and changing storage easily Retro handheld Models such as the RG35XX use TF/microSD storage, subject to model compatibility and setup.
One device for modern and classic gaming Usually Nintendo Switch 2 It offers compatible Switch software and some backward compatibility, while a retro handheld’s modern-game support is not established.

The deciding question is not “Which machine has better specifications?” It is “Which games, display modes and setup process do you actually want?”

What you are comparing

Nintendo Switch 2 is a hybrid console

Nintendo describes Switch 2 as a system that can be used in three ways: handheld with its built-in screen, tabletop with the console propped up, and TV play through its dock. Its 7.9-inch display runs at 1080p, and Nintendo describes TV output up to 4K when the television, cable, software and other supported conditions meet the requirements. It also has 256 GB of internal storage.

Switch 2 is intended for current Nintendo releases and compatible games from the original Switch generation. “Compatible” is important: Nintendo warns that some previous Switch games may not be supported or may not work fully. Compatibility can therefore depend on a specific title, accessory or feature rather than simply on whether a game was sold for the older system.

A retro handheld is a dedicated category

A retro handheld generally has a small built-in screen, physical controls, a lightweight operating system and emulators for selected classic platforms. The ANBERNIC RG35XX illustrates the category. Its 2024 specification material lists Linux, a 3.5-inch IPS display and TF/microSD storage. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent finding that every advertised system or game runs correctly.

Retro handhelds can be attractive because they put classic games in a compact, inexpensive-looking form factor and often make it easy to maintain a separate game library on removable storage. They also make you responsible for more of the experience: identifying the exact model, checking which formats it supports, configuring controls and obtaining game files legally.

Nintendo’s current Switch choices

“Nintendo Switch” can refer to several machines. The differences matter when portability, screen quality, battery life and TV use are part of your decision.

Model Screen Resolution Internal storage Manufacturer battery estimate Play modes and limits
Nintendo Switch 2 7.9-inch 1080p 256 GB Not stated by Nintendo Handheld, tabletop and TV; compatible Switch games, with title-specific caveats; microSD Express expansion.
Switch – OLED Model 7.0-inch OLED 1280×720 handheld 64 GB Approximately 4.5–9 hours Supports the family’s handheld, tabletop and TV use.
Standard Nintendo Switch 6.2-inch LCD 1280×720 handheld 32 GB Approximately 4.5–9 hours Supports the family’s handheld, tabletop and TV use.
Switch Lite 5.5-inch LCD 1280×720 32 GB Approximately 3–7 hours Handheld-only; Nintendo says it plays Switch games that support handheld mode.

The battery figures are Nintendo estimates, not results from a common laboratory test. Nintendo says actual endurance depends on the games played, so the ranges should not be treated as directly comparable to an independently measured retro-handheld result. No independent battery test for the RG35XX or matched workload comparison is provided.

Why Switch Lite changes the comparison

Switch Lite is the closest Nintendo model to a handheld-only product, but it remains part of the Switch software family. It does not provide the standard Switch docked experience. Nintendo’s own wording is precise: “Nintendo Switch Lite can play the games in the Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode.” A game that requires detached controllers, a stand or another non-handheld feature may need additional equipment or may not be suitable for Switch Lite.

Screen size, controls and carrying comfort

A 7.9-inch 1080p Switch 2 screen gives modern games more display area than the 3.5-inch IPS panel listed for the RG35XX. That difference is useful for games with small text, detailed maps, menus or split-screen information. It also means the Switch 2 is a larger device category; exact comparative dimensions or weight are not established, so do not assume a particular pocket fit from screen size alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RG35XX’s smaller screen can be an advantage for classic games designed around low-resolution artwork. Pixels and simple menus remain legible without requiring a large panel, and the reduced display area can help the device feel purpose-built for short sessions. On the other hand, text-heavy role-playing games, strategy interfaces and games designed for a television may be less comfortable on a 3.5-inch screen.

Control layout is equally important. A retro handheld normally uses a directional pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons and a compact menu system. Switch 2 uses Nintendo’s current controller ecosystem and can be used as a handheld or with separate controllers in tabletop and TV modes. The best choice depends on whether you prefer a fixed, compact control surface or the flexibility to change how you hold and play.

Game libraries and compatibility

When Switch 2 is the safer software choice

Choose Switch 2 when the games you name first are current Nintendo releases, online services tied to the Switch platform, or compatible games from the original Switch library. You buy and launch those games through Nintendo’s supported ecosystem rather than configuring an emulator for each system. The console can also move from a commute to a living-room session without changing platforms.

Do not read “compatible Switch games” as an unconditional promise that every older title behaves identically. Nintendo’s compatibility information notes that some games may be unsupported or only partially compatible. Check the specific game and any required accessories before buying Switch 2 for a particular older title.

When a retro handheld is the better software fit

A retro handheld makes more sense when your target list consists mainly of older console, arcade or handheld formats supported by the exact model. The RG35XX specification material establishes Linux, a 3.5-inch IPS screen and TF/microSD storage, but it does not verify universal compatibility, frame-rate stability, save behavior or flawless emulation for every title in every advertised format.

Manufacturer format lists should be treated as a starting point. Before buying, identify the precise RG35XX variant, find its current documentation, and check whether the systems you care about are listed. Look for practical details such as controller mapping, suspend and resume behavior, save-state support, screen scaling and whether a game needs more processing power than the device can provide.

Do not use “retro” as a synonym for “every old game”

Retro systems span very different hardware generations. A handheld that handles 8-bit and 16-bit software comfortably may not provide the same experience for later 3D consoles, arcade boards or unusual peripherals. No independent performance matrix is provided for the RG35XX, so a purchase decision should be based on the formats you have checked, not on a broad label such as “supports retro games.”

Battery, storage and daily use

Battery expectations

Nintendo lists approximately 4.5–9 hours for both the OLED and standard Switch and approximately 3–7 hours for Switch Lite. These are estimates that vary with the game. Nintendo’s Switch 2 feature information describes its screen and storage but does not establish a comparable battery range. There is also no independent test putting Switch 2 and the RG35XX through the same game or brightness workload.

  • Expandable Storage & All-Scenario Use:Dual TF card slots support up to 512GB expansion for more games. Multi-language system and simple operation make this retro handheld game console ideal for home, travel, camping and retro gaming collection.

A retro handheld may draw less power during simple 2D emulation than a modern hybrid console running a demanding 3D game, but that is a workload observation, not a measured claim about a particular model’s runtime. Treat any seller’s battery number as model-specific and verify how it was measured.

Storage standards are not interchangeable

Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expandable storage. Nintendo says older microSD cards that do not meet the Express standard cannot be used for this storage purpose. If you are upgrading a Switch 2, check the card’s standard before buying; a familiar-looking microSD card is not automatically suitable.

The RG35XX specification material lists TF/microSD storage. That makes removable storage relevant for the retro device’s operating system and game library, but the exact capacity, filesystem, card speed and supported maximum can vary by model or firmware. Verify the model’s instructions before formatting a card or replacing the supplied one, and keep a backup of saves and configuration files.

Setup and lawful game-file access

Setting up Switch 2

  1. Connect the console to power and complete Nintendo’s initial system setup.
  2. Sign in to the Nintendo account you intend to use for purchases and online features.
  3. Update the system when prompted so compatibility and security fixes are installed.
  4. Choose physical or digital games through Nintendo’s supported channels.
  5. If you need more space, install a card that meets the microSD Express requirement rather than reusing an older non-Express card.
  6. For TV play, use the supplied dock and a compatible display setup; for tabletop play, use the console’s stand and suitable controllers.

Setting up a retro handheld

  1. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision. “RG35XX” is a product family label, and accessories or firmware may differ between variants.
  2. Read the current manufacturer instructions before changing the TF/microSD card or installing firmware.
  3. Back up the original card and save data before formatting, replacing or reorganizing storage.
  4. Use only game files you are legally entitled to use under the law where you live.
  5. Copy files into the directory structure required by the device and verify that the listed format matches the game system you want to emulate.
  6. Launch a small selection first, configure controls and display scaling, and test saving and loading before copying a large library.

Buying an emulator handheld does not grant rights to commercial game files. Nintendo’s intellectual-property guidance discusses unauthorized ROM use and devices or software that bypass its security measures. That guidance is Nintendo’s policy position, not a complete legal analysis for every country or ownership situation. The practical rule is to check local law and use files you have the rights to use; do not assume that a device, preloaded card or internet download is lawful merely because it works technically.

Total cost: compare the complete setup

Nintendo of America announced that the US MSRP for Switch 2 would rise from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. That is a US manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a global price or a guarantee of what a particular retailer charges. The announcement said the original Switch system’s pricing was not changing. Verify the price in your country and on the date you buy.

No current RG35XX price is established, so a precise price-versus-price verdict would be misleading. A fair comparison should include the device, a suitable storage card if needed, a case or screen protection if you want one, controllers for a preferred play mode, games, and any replacement accessories. For Switch 2, include the cost of games and a microSD Express card if internal storage is insufficient. For a retro handheld, include the time and storage needed to prepare a lawful library.

Cost category Switch 2 Dedicated retro handheld
Base device US MSRP $499.99 from September 1, 2026; regional and retailer prices vary. No current RG35XX price is published here.

Expandable storage Requires microSD Express for Switch 2 expansion. TF/microSD storage is listed for the RG35XX; verify capacity and compatibility.
TV and tabletop accessories Hybrid play is a core feature, with the required dock and compatible setup. Not established as a standard feature for the RG35XX.

Which device is more portable?

“Portable” can mean pocketability, play time away from a charger, or the ability to continue a game in different locations. A small retro handheld is likely to be easier to carry than a larger hybrid console, but exact RG35XX dimensions and weight are not published here. Check the manufacturer’s current measurements if a jacket pocket or small bag is a hard requirement.

Switch 2 is more portable in another sense: it carries a modern console experience from handheld to tabletop to television. You can start in handheld mode, set it on a stand, or dock it without moving to a different platform. That flexibility is valuable for travel involving a hotel television, shared living room or multiplayer session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For commuting, consider the games you actually play. A short puzzle or role-playing session may suit either category. A game with frequent loading, small text or complex controls may benefit from Switch 2’s larger screen, while a quick classic platformer may feel natural on a compact retro device.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every Switch game works everywhere: Check whether the title supports handheld mode on Switch Lite and whether Nintendo lists any Switch 2 compatibility limitation.
  • Buying the wrong memory card: Switch 2 expansion requires microSD Express. A non-Express card is not a valid substitute for that purpose.
  • Treating a format list as a performance guarantee: Retro handheld specifications are manufacturer claims. Confirm the exact game and system rather than relying on a general label.
  • Formatting the only copy of a retro card: Back up the original card and saves before changing storage or firmware.
  • Assuming included files are automatically legal: Hardware ownership and copyright permission are separate issues. Check local law and the rights attached to every game file.
  • Comparing battery numbers from different sources: Nintendo’s Switch ranges are estimates tied to game workload, and no matched RG35XX test is established here.
  • Using the word “Switch” without naming the model: OLED, standard, Lite and Switch 2 differ in screen, storage, play modes and compatibility.
  • Budgeting only for the console: Add games, storage, controllers and any setup accessories to the purchase decision.

A practical decision process

  1. Write down five games you most want to play. Mark whether each is a current Nintendo game, a compatible older Switch title or a classic format.
  2. Eliminate incompatible play modes. If television or tabletop use matters, Switch Lite is not the right Switch model; if a game is not supported on Switch 2, do not rely on backward compatibility.
  3. Check the exact retro system list. Match your target games to the specific RG35XX variant and its current documentation.
  4. Decide how much setup you want. Switch 2 emphasizes supported purchases and updates. A retro handheld gives more control over files and configuration but requires more responsibility.
  5. Calculate the complete regional cost. Use the local Switch 2 price, the current retro-handheld price, storage and game costs rather than the device prices alone.
  6. Choose based on your dominant use. If most sessions involve modern releases or a television, choose Switch 2. If most sessions involve classic formats on a small handheld and you accept lawful file management, choose the retro device.

What about a portable PC?

A device such as Valve’s Steam Deck OLED is a third category: a portable PC aimed at PC games rather than Nintendo software or a compact retro-only setup. It may be relevant if your library is primarily on PC, but it does not resolve the central choice between Nintendo’s hybrid ecosystem and a dedicated retro handheld. Consider it only when PC compatibility, desktop features and a larger operating system are more important than the two categories compared here.

Final verdict

Nintendo Switch 2 is the better portable gaming choice for most readers who want current Nintendo software, compatible Switch games, a larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen and the option to play on a TV or tabletop. Its US MSRP is $499.99 from September 1, 2026, and its expansion-storage requirement is specifically microSD Express.

A dedicated retro handheld is the better choice when your priority is a compact, handheld-only machine for selected classic formats. The RG35XX demonstrates the category with Linux, a 3.5-inch IPS display and TF/microSD storage, but its format and performance claims should be checked against the games you intend to play. You must also arrange lawful game files yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
