There is no objectively best-looking camera. But a camera’s design can do more than evoke the past: dedicated dials, a particular viewfinder and the choice of a fixed or interchangeable lens all affect how you take pictures. The Fujifilm X100VI makes a strong case for a tactile, rangefinder-inspired experience; the Nikon Z fc offers a contrasting SLR-inspired look with interchangeable lenses.
What makes a camera’s style matter?
Looks are personal, and appearance alone cannot tell you whether a camera is right for you. A useful design is one that changes the experience of shooting: controls you can operate directly, a finder that suits how you compose, or a body and lens combination you want to carry.
That is the difference between a camera that merely looks old-fashioned and one whose design has a practical role. Dedicated controls can make key settings easier to reach; a finder changes what you see while framing; and a fixed lens or interchangeable-lens mount determines how much you can adapt the camera to different subjects.

The X100VI is a compelling choice if you want a compact-looking camera with direct, tactile controls. Fujifilm says its top-plate dials echo classic film-camera design and provide access to shutter speed, aperture and ISO. That layout makes the styling functional, rather than simply decorative. Fujifilm’s product page describes the controls and specifications.

A hybrid finder for two ways of composing
The camera’s hybrid finder lets you switch between an electronic viewfinder and an optical viewfinder. Fujifilm says the optical viewfinder shows beyond the frame, giving you a view of the surrounding scene as you compose. Choose this kind of finder based on how you prefer to frame photographs, not just how it looks in a product photo.
The fixed-lens tradeoff
The X100VI has a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, with a field of view equivalent to 35mm on a 35mm-format camera. That focal length can suit everyday photography and travel, but you cannot swap lenses when you want a wider, longer or otherwise different perspective. Consider whether you are happy to work with one field of view before choosing a fixed-lens camera.

Fujifilm lists a 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and 20 Film Simulation modes, including REALA ACE. Film Simulation modes provide in-camera image-style options; they do not determine whether a fixed lens or a particular camera system suits your needs. Megapixels alone also do not establish overall image quality.

The Nikon Z fc takes a different approach: its design draws on SLR heritage, while its camera system is a contemporary mirrorless one. Nikon describes the design as more than a recreation of an older body. A Nikon Z fc product designer explains: “When we say we focused on the iconic cameras of the past, it is not simply about tracing the outer shapes of those cameras again. Bringing it back to a camera that fits today’s world is what’s important.” Nikon’s design account provides that rationale.

Unlike the X100VI, the Z fc uses Nikon’s Z DX lens mount, so you can choose compatible lenses for different kinds of photography. That flexibility is useful if you want to change focal length or build a system around more than one shooting need. It also means evaluating lens availability, cost and the size of the lenses you are likely to carry—not just the camera body’s appearance.
How the two designs compare
| Camera | Design and controls | Lens approach | Finder and key facts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fujifilm X100VI | Rangefinder-inspired styling; top-plate dials provide access to shutter speed, aperture and ISO, according to Fujifilm. | Fixed 23mm f/2 lens; 35mm-format equivalent field of view of 35mm. | Hybrid electronic and optical viewfinder; 40.2MP sensor; 20 Film Simulation modes, including REALA ACE. Specifications are from Fujifilm. |
| Nikon Z fc | SLR-inspired heritage cues on a contemporary mirrorless camera, according to Nikon. | Interchangeable lenses using the Nikon Z DX mount. | APS-C sensor and Nikon Z DX lens mount, as listed in the current comparative guide. The cited Nikon design account does not state resolution or finder specifications. |
The Digital Camera World retro-camera guide also treats design as one part of a broader choice: image quality, autofocus and video still matter. Its comparisons are editorial guidance, not proof that one style produces better photographs.

Choose by the pictures you want to make
- For a single-lens everyday setup: A fixed-lens camera such as the X100VI offers a defined field of view and avoids choosing among lenses. Make sure that 35mm-equivalent view fits the way you expect to shoot.
- For changing subjects or perspectives: An interchangeable-lens body such as the Z fc gives you lens options. Weigh that flexibility against the cost and carrying burden of the lenses you would actually use.
- For direct physical control: Check whether the dials expose the settings you adjust most often. On the X100VI, Fujifilm specifically identifies shutter speed, aperture and ISO as accessible from the top-plate controls.
- For a particular composing experience: Compare optical, electronic and hybrid finders, along with screen positions that matter for your shooting. A finder’s style is only useful if you like working with it.
- For a complete system decision: Consider sensor format, resolution, autofocus, stabilization and video capabilities alongside design. The cited product and design information does not establish a universal performance winner across those needs.
Is there a modern digital camera with the body of a film camera?
That question appeared in a camera-forum discussion, but it is one person’s phrasing rather than evidence of broad demand. The useful answer is that modern cameras can borrow film-era design cues without being replicas of film bodies. The Nikon Z fc illustrates that distinction in Nikon’s own account; the X100VI pairs classic-looking controls with a hybrid finder and a fixed-lens digital camera design.
Neither camera is the universal answer to “best-looking.” The better fit depends on which design details improve your own experience and whether the lens arrangement matches your photography.
