Retatrutide remains an investigational Phase 3 drug, not an approved treatment. No medicine containing retatrutide had been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or another regulator in the latest reports. Vials sold online, through social media, medical spas or “research use only” websites are outside the regulated drug supply chain, and their contents, strength and sterility cannot be verified.
What retatrutide is—and what “GLP-3” means
Retatrutide is Eli Lilly’s experimental “triple agonist” obesity medicine. Its clinical-trial results have attracted attention because participants experienced substantial weight loss under controlled study conditions. Those results apply to Lilly’s tested investigational product, manufactured and administered under trial protocols. They do not establish that an internet vial has the same ingredient, concentration, sterility or risk profile.
“GLP-3” is not an FDA-approved medicine or an established regulatory category. Online sellers and social-media posts may use the term as shorthand for newer multi-receptor weight-loss compounds, but the label does not authenticate a product or show that it has been evaluated in people.

Is retatrutide approved yet?
No. Retatrutide was still in Phase 3 clinical trials, and no regulator had approved a retatrutide-containing medicine in the period covered by the latest reports. There is therefore no approved retatrutide label that sets a validated dose, lists established contraindications or defines a post-approval safety profile.

Compounding is not a legal workaround. The FDA says retatrutide cannot be used in compounding under federal law and has not been found safe and effective for any condition. A website’s claim that it is selling a “compounded” or “research” version does not change that status.
Why people are buying it anyway
Demand is being driven by reports of strong weight-loss results from clinical trials and by social-media promotion. That creates a dangerous substitution: a buyer may assume that a vial bearing the retatrutide name is the same product used in a trial, even though an illicit version may contain too much active ingredient, too little, no retatrutide, a different drug, contaminants or manufacturing impurities.
FDA-reviewed medicines are evaluated for safety, effectiveness and quality before approval. An unapproved vial has not passed that review, and a “research use only” disclaimer does not make human injection safe or lawful.

How the retatrutide black market operates
Eli Lilly has described illegal imports, overseas manufacturing, online and social-media advertising, medical spas and wellness clinics selling products for human dosing while displaying “research use only” language. On August 12, 2026, Lilly said it had filed six lawsuits, referred more than 200 individuals and entities to authorities, and identified more than 14,000 websites, advertisements, social posts and product listings across more than 100 countries.
Those are Lilly’s reported enforcement figures, not an independent count of every seller or vial in circulation. They do show how easily a product can move from a web listing to a consumer without a licensed prescriber, a state-licensed pharmacy or a documented cold chain.
What is known about the reported deaths
CBS reported two FDA adverse-event reports associated with products described as black-market retatrutide. The reports are serious, but they do not prove that retatrutide—or even the labeled product—caused either death.

The two reports
- One report described a 41-year-old woman who developed a dangerously fast heartbeat and died after resuscitation attempts failed.
- Another described a 49-year-old patient who obtained a product through a registered nurse, then experienced severe dehydration, malnutrition and cardiac arrest.
CBS could not independently verify the reports. The FDA did not say whether it had verified them. Lilly said the patients had used black-market products and that it had found suspect products with incorrect or contaminated contents.

Pieter Cohen, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, told CBS: “The FDA should do whatever it possibly could do to get their hands on the actual drug that was injected by both of these patients, and get that analyzed.” Without laboratory analysis and complete medical records, the reports remain allegations under review rather than confirmed drug-causation findings.
Lilly chief medical officer David A. Hyman, M.D., said: “What is being sold on the black market is not a medicine – it is entirely unverified, unapproved and not worth the risk.”

Poison-center reports are rising
America’s Poison Centers logged 862 reported exposures during July through September 2026, compared with 460 in the preceding quarter and 249 in the first quarter. These figures are reports received by poison centers—not confirmed poisoning cases, a measure of how many people used retatrutide, or an estimate of prevalence. The increase nevertheless signals growing exposure to products whose identity and concentration may be unknown.

How to avoid a dangerous seller
The safest choice is not to buy or inject retatrutide offered outside a licensed, regulated pathway. FDA advises consumers to obtain a prescription from a doctor and fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy. Treat a seller as a major risk when it:

- ships medication that arrives warm or damaged; or
- uses labels with spelling errors or a questionable pharmacy address.
A professional-looking website, a lot number or a “research use only” label cannot substitute for regulatory approval and a verified supply chain.

What to do if you already injected it
- Do not take another dose or attempt to alter, dilute or reconstitute the product.
- Contact a healthcare professional promptly and disclose the product name, seller, label, amount used and time of exposure. Keep the vial, packaging and shipping materials for identification.
- For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, contact emergency services immediately rather than waiting for an online seller or clinic to respond.
- Report suspected adverse events or product-quality problems to the FDA through MedWatch. Include photographs of the label and any available purchase information.
Medical evaluation is important even when symptoms seem limited: an unknown concentration or ingredient can make the actual exposure impossible to judge from the label alone.
The practical answer
Retatrutide’s trial results explain the excitement, but they do not validate a vial bought online. There is no approved retatrutide product to order, no lawful compounding shortcut under federal law, and no reliable way for a consumer to confirm the identity, dose or sterility of a black-market injection. Use regulated, clinician-supervised treatment instead, and report suspected harm so authorities can investigate the product involved.
