Retail’s future is about building useful, trusted relationships across shopping journeys—not abandoning checkout. Stores, websites, services, and AI-assisted discovery can work together to help people find, choose, buy, and get support for products. The strategic shift is to treat the sale as one important moment in a wider relationship, while making each interaction valuable enough to earn the customer’s attention and trust.

Why retail is expanding beyond the transaction

A checkout completes a purchase; it does not, by itself, create a reason for a customer to return. Retailers are increasingly being urged to pair product sales with services, experiences, advice, inspiration, and content. McKinsey’s 2023 analysis describes this as owning more of the consumer relationship and measuring “share of life” alongside share of wallet. That is a strategic argument, not proof that every retailer should add services or that doing so guarantees growth.

The practical question is whether an interaction helps a customer make progress: discovering a relevant product, comparing options, getting advice, collecting an order, or resolving a problem. If it does, it can strengthen the relationship around the transaction. If it adds friction or feels like a generic marketing touch, more contact is not necessarily more connection.

What the evidence says about how people shop

Retail remains a cross-channel activity. In a 2026 study drawing on IBM research with 18,000 global consumers, NRF reports that nearly three-quarters of surveyed consumers still shop in stores. The same study found that AI assistants are already part of some customers’ product discovery: 41% use them to research products, 33% to look for reviews, and 31% to search for deals. These figures describe surveyed consumers, not every market or shopper.

Executive priorities point in a similar direction, but they should not be mistaken for evidence of outcomes. Deloitte’s January 2025 outlook reports that 46% of 75 US-based retail executives surveyed in October and November 2024 identified strengthening loyalty programs as a growth opportunity; 45% identified stronger digital commerce offerings, and 44% identified better omnichannel experiences. These are executives’ stated priorities, not proof that any one investment will cause growth.

The through-line is continuity. A customer might encounter a product in a store, seek reviews through an AI assistant, check a retailer’s site for availability, and choose delivery or pickup. A retailer’s opportunity is to make those steps feel connected rather than like separate experiences that force the customer to start over.

Where connection can happen

Stores: discovery, service, and fulfillment

Stores can do more than display inventory. McKinsey describes stores as potential showrooms, service centers, and fulfillment hubs. NRF’s 2025 predictions likewise present immersive stores as a way to express brand identity and foster trust, personal interaction, and community. These are strategic possibilities and predictions—not evidence that an immersive store automatically improves sales or retention.

A store-led approach makes sense when physical interaction solves a real need: trying a product, getting hands-on guidance, attending an event, receiving service, or collecting an order. The experience should be distinctive and useful, not merely elaborate.

Digital channels: discovery that leads somewhere

Digital commerce, social commerce, and shoppable media can bring products into the places where people browse and seek inspiration. Deloitte’s outlook identifies social commerce and shoppable media as potential ways to reach engaged audiences. Their value depends on whether discovery connects to clear product information, a dependable purchase path, and support after the sale.

AI assistants add another discovery route. Their role in research, reviews, and deal finding makes it important for retailers to consider how customers encounter product information outside the retailer’s own site. The NRF–IBM study also emphasizes that trust must be earned by people and algorithms; being present in an AI-mediated journey is not useful if information is inaccurate or the next step is unclear.

Services and loyalty: reasons to return

Advice, repair, installation, education, and other services can extend a relationship when they address a customer need. Loyalty programs can also help recognize repeat customers, but a program is not a substitute for a good experience. Deloitte’s executive survey shows that retailers regard loyalty as a growth opportunity; it does not establish which program design works best or whether rewards alone create lasting attachment.

Personalization only works if it earns trust

Relevant recommendations can reduce the effort of finding a suitable product, but personal data creates a clear constraint. In the NRF–IBM 2026 study, 52% of surveyed consumers said they were comfortable sharing their data, while 83% reported overlapping concerns about privacy, misuse, and unwanted marketing. These figures can coexist: willingness to share does not mean unconditional permission to use data in any way.

Deloitte’s 2025 outlook found that 69% of surveyed retail executives identified strained consumer trust due to next-generation technology as a challenge. That is an executive-reported concern, not a measure of consumer sentiment. Taken together, the findings make a strong case for restraint: personalization should be explainable, relevant, and respectful of customer choices. More data collection is not the same as a stronger relationship.

How to compare retail strategies

Store-led, digital-led, service-led, and AI-enabled investments are not mutually exclusive. Compare them against the customer need and the retailer’s ability to deliver, rather than treating a channel or technology as a strategy on its own.

Decision test What to ask
Customer usefulness Does this interaction solve a real discovery, advice, service, or fulfillment need?
Trust and data practice Is personalization transparent, relevant, and respectful of privacy preferences?
Channel continuity Can a customer move between store, web, social, and assisted shopping without losing context?
People and capability Can associates deliver the promised experience? Will technology free them for valuable customer interactions, or create more work?
Economics What will fulfillment, staffing, technology transitions, or partner fees cost, and what customer or business value is expected in return?
Brand distinctiveness Does the experience express something the retailer can own, or is it a feature competitors can easily copy?

This is a decision framework synthesized from the cited sources, not a published ranking. It also highlights a common execution gap: Deloitte warns that fragmented data, legacy systems, workforce readiness, and high technology-transition costs can make omnichannel ambitions difficult and expensive to deliver.

What this means for checkout

Checkout still matters because it is where discovery and intent become a purchase. A slow, confusing, or unreliable payment and fulfillment process can undermine an otherwise strong experience. But optimizing checkout alone cannot provide advice, discovery, service, or continuity across channels. Retail’s direction is not “connection instead of checkout”; it is connection before, during, and after checkout, with the transaction supported by a relationship the customer finds worthwhile.
