The best retail market research software depends on the decision you need to make. Use a POS and inventory analytics tool to explain what already sold and where money is tied up; use a survey platform to learn what shoppers may buy next; and use a recurring reporting service when you mainly need dependable weekly summaries. No single product in this guide does all three jobs equally well.
For a small retailer, the practical shortlist is: StoreTurnAI for export-based operational analysis, 1Q for self-service consumer surveys, Savoir Analytics for inexpensive Square or Shopify reporting, and Checkbox for broader survey and qualitative workflows. The right choice follows your data source, research question, refresh requirement, and billing tolerance—not the longest feature list.

What retail market research software actually does
“Market research software” covers several different activities that are often confused. A POS analytics product mines your historical transactions, products, costs, prices, stock counts, and shrink. A primary-research platform recruits respondents and collects answers about needs, preferences, concepts, brands, or shopping behavior. A reporting layer turns commerce-system data into scheduled summaries. These outputs answer different questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Operational questions: Which products or categories generate margin? What is turning slowly? Where does shrink or inaccurate cost data distort the picture?
- Customer questions: Why did a shopper choose one concept, price, package, or competitor? Would a prospective product appeal to a defined local audience?
- Management questions: What changed this week in revenue, transactions, products, categories, margins, or reviews?
A survey cannot reconstruct your sell-through or inventory position, and a POS dashboard cannot tell you why non-buyers rejected an idea. Start by naming the decision, then select the narrowest tool that can produce evidence for it.

Choose the research job before choosing a product
When you need to improve stock, margin, or pricing
Choose an operational analytics product if the decision begins with your own transaction history. You will need reliable item identifiers, selling prices, cost fields, quantities, returns, and inventory counts. The output should help you prioritize actions such as reordering, marking down, correcting a price, investigating shrink, or comparing stores. A platform that merely charts revenue will not answer a buying or margin question.
When you need an answer from shoppers
Choose a panel or survey platform when the relevant people are not represented in your POS records—for example, lapsed customers, non-buyers, residents of a target neighborhood, or shoppers who have not seen a proposed product. Define the population, geography, quotas, sample size, incidence expectation, and decision rule before paying for responses.
When you need a dependable weekly operating rhythm
Choose a reporting layer when your main problem is time spent downloading data and rebuilding the same report. This route is economical when standard revenue, transaction, product, category, margin, trend, and review views are sufficient. It is less suitable when you need custom segmentation, experimental design, or a causal explanation for a change.
StoreTurnAI: operational analytics from your existing exports
StoreTurnAI says it is built for independent single-store and small multi-location retailers. It organizes exported sales and inventory data into net sales, gross margin, inventory value, inventory turnover, shrink, pricing, and buying measures. It explicitly does not replace the POS, so you continue to use your current checkout and inventory system as the system of record.
Rank #2
Where it fits
- Prioritizing which products or categories need attention.
- Comparing performance across a small group of locations.
- Examining the relationship between selling price, cost, margin, and stock on hand.
- Turning physical-count exports into a more useful shrink or inventory view.
Published plans and cost interpretation
| Locations | Monthly price | Simple 12-month equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $149/month | $1,788 if the monthly price remains unchanged for 12 months |
| 2–5 | $299/month | $3,588 if the monthly price remains unchanged for 12 months |
| 6–10 | $599/month | $7,188 if the monthly price remains unchanged for 12 months |
| More than 10 | Custom pricing | Not stated |
Those are published monthly figures from the vendor’s 2026 page capture, not a guarantee of a contract total, taxes, onboarding fees, or future pricing. A self-guided playground with sample data is available without a sales call, which lets you inspect the type of analysis before connecting live exports.
Questions to resolve before subscribing
- Which POS export formats and field names are accepted?
- How often can you refresh data, and is the process manual or automated?
- Are cost-of-goods fields complete enough for gross-margin calculations?
- How are returns, discounts, taxes, transfers, bundles, and damaged stock treated?
- Can staff access be restricted by role or location?
1Q: self-service surveys priced by response
1Q presents a do-it-yourself market-research platform with geographic targeting and a proprietary panel of more than 1 million members, according to its vendor page. Published pricing starts at $1 per response plus disclosed processing charges. The page says customers can launch surveys without review delays.
Good uses for a retailer
- Testing two product concepts before placing a wholesale order.
- Measuring preference for package, flavor, feature, or price options.
- Checking brand perceptions in a defined geographic market.
- Asking prospective or lapsed shoppers questions absent from transaction records.
Budget the complete study, not just the headline rate
At the advertised starting rate, 300 completed responses would imply at least $300 before processing charges; the actual total depends on targeting, incidence, and other disclosed fees. Treat that arithmetic as a floor, not a quote. Ask for the expected incidence rate—the share of invited people who qualify—and the number of completes required for each subgroup. A low per-response price can become expensive if a narrowly defined audience is difficult to recruit.
Quality and design checks
- Specify age, location, shopper status, and any category behavior as screening criteria.
- Set quotas before launch so a large easy-to-reach group does not dominate the result.
- Ask how duplicate, inattentive, or otherwise low-quality responses are detected.
- Confirm the analysis views, raw-data export, weighting options, and supported file formats.
- Write the decision rule in advance, such as “advance the concept if at least 60% of the target segment selects it and no safety concern exceeds the threshold.”
Savoir Analytics: low-cost weekly reports for Square or Shopify
Savoir Analytics connects to Square or Shopify through OAuth. Its first report covers the previous 30 days, then the service sends a PDF each week; Excel reports are available on higher plans. The public prices shown are Standard at $20/month, Advanced at $30/month, and Executive at $50/month.
Rank #3
What that workflow solves
This is a reporting layer rather than a panel-recruitment or full qualitative-research environment. It suits an owner who repeatedly asks, “What changed since last week?” and wants a consistent report without exporting data into a spreadsheet. At the listed prices, the simple 12-month equivalents are $240, $360, and $600 respectively, assuming the monthly price stays unchanged.
Validate the accounting details
- Does your plan include every required sales channel or store?
- How are refunds, taxes, discounts, gift cards, and canceled orders represented?
- Are margins based on imported cost of goods, an estimate, or no cost field?
- Can you customize the report or export data for an accountant or analyst?
- Which plan includes Excel, and are there limits on recipients or report history?
OAuth reduces manual credential handling, but you should still confirm what permissions are requested and how access is revoked when an employee or agency leaves.
Checkbox: a broader survey and qualitative workspace
Checkbox describes a market-research solution spanning surveys, qualitative research, consumer behavior, customer sentiment, purchase behavior, brand perceptions, and competitive analysis. It positions the offering for growing small-business teams that need more than a single POS dashboard.

When the broader workflow is justified
Consider this type of platform when one project combines a structured questionnaire with interviews, open-ended feedback, or analysis by customer type and market. It can be a better organizational home than separate survey links and spreadsheets when several people must review instruments, responses, and findings.
Rank #4
Commercial and technical questions
- Are respondent counts, seats, projects, or advanced analytics metered?
- Can results be segmented by store, market, customer type, or purchase behavior?
- Which qualitative methods are supported, and how are recordings or notes stored?
- What exports are available for statistical analysis or archiving?
- What retention, deletion, role-permission, and respondent-protection controls are included?
The cited page does not state a public price, so request a written quote that names every usage limit rather than comparing it with a per-response rate alone.
Use NIQ as a capability benchmark, not an automatic recommendation
NIQ describes pricing and promotion analytics that combine retailer POS data with market pricing, promotions, and shopper behavior. That illustrates the analytical ceiling a larger organization may seek: competitive price context, promotion measurement, and shopper-level interpretation in addition to internal sales reporting. The cited material does not establish a small-business plan or price. Use those capabilities to write your requirements, then ask smaller vendors which subset they can actually support.

1. Write the decision in one sentence
Use a form such as: “We will decide whether to reorder product A, change its price, or discontinue it by 15 June,” or “We will select a launch concept for shoppers within 10 miles of our store.” If you cannot name the decision, a dashboard or survey is likely to produce interesting but unused data.

2. Identify the evidence and its owner
| Question | Evidence required | Likely tool type | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| What should we reorder? | Units sold, contribution margin, stock on hand, lead time, and count accuracy | POS/inventory analytics | Buyer or store manager |
| Would shoppers buy this concept? | Targeted responses with a defined sample and screening questions | Panel survey | Owner or marketing lead |
| What changed this week? | Consistent revenue, transaction, product, category, margin, and review measures | Recurring reporting | Owner or accountant |
| Why is sentiment changing? | Ratings plus open-ended or interview evidence, segmented by customer type | Broader research workspace | Customer or marketing team |
3. Compare the billing unit with your operating scale
- Per location: predictable for a known store count, but the next location tier can create a large jump.
- Per response: flexible for occasional studies; total cost rises with sample size, screening difficulty, and processing charges.
- Per month or plan: inexpensive for ongoing standard reports, provided the included integrations and exports are sufficient.
- Custom quote: potentially appropriate for complex segmentation or governance, but difficult to budget until limits and implementation costs are written down.
4. Score the non-price requirements
Give each candidate a pass/fail or 1–5 score for data connection, refresh or delivery schedule, exportability, role permissions, support, retention controls, and the exact analysis needed. A cheap product that cannot import your cost fields or export the data you need is not cheap in practice.
Best Value
Implementation: a low-risk rollout
- Document the source data. List every POS, inventory, commerce, survey, and review source; identify the system of record and the person responsible for each field.
- Clean a representative period. Include at least one normal sales period and inspect duplicate SKUs, missing costs, negative quantities, returns, tax treatment, and location codes before trusting a result.
- Run a sandbox or pilot. Use StoreTurnAI’s sample-data playground where appropriate, or connect one store and one reporting period first. For a survey, pilot the questionnaire with a small number of responses and check skip logic and quotas.
- Reconcile outputs. Compare reported revenue, transaction counts, units, and margin inputs with your source system. Investigate every unexplained difference rather than accepting a polished chart.
- Set the operating cadence. Assign who reviews the weekly report, who can change a survey, who approves a price action, and where decisions are recorded.
- Review after the first decision. Measure whether the chosen action improved sell-through, margin, satisfaction, or another pre-agreed outcome. Do not judge a research tool only by how attractive its dashboard looks.
Data quality, privacy, and governance checks
Retail analysis is only as reliable as the definitions behind it. Agree on whether “sales” is gross or net of returns, whether margin uses landed cost or a simpler cost field, when inventory is considered available, and how transfers and damaged goods are handled. Keep a short data dictionary so a new employee does not silently change a KPI definition.
For customer and respondent data, minimize collection to what the decision requires. Confirm the vendor’s role permissions, retention and deletion process, export controls, and incident-contact procedure. Do not upload personally identifiable information when aggregated counts will answer the question. For panel studies, ask how consent, duplicate prevention, and low-quality response handling are managed; for OAuth connections, review requested scopes and revoke access that is no longer needed.
Common failure modes and fixes
The dashboard says margin is high, but cash is falling
Check whether cost of goods, returns, discounts, taxes, and inventory adjustments are populated consistently. A revenue chart can be correct while a margin calculation is not. Reconcile a small set of SKUs manually before acting on category rankings.
A survey produces a clear result that does not match sales
Inspect the sample first. Respondents may not represent your shoppers, the question may describe a hypothetical purchase, or a screening quota may have been missed. Compare stated preference with an observable behavior question and document the difference instead of averaging the two into one number.
Weekly reports arrive but nobody uses them
Reduce the report to decisions. Assign one owner, highlight only the measures tied to current actions, and record the action and due date beside each exception. If the report cannot change a reorder, staffing, price, or customer follow-up decision, it is probably too broad.
Costs jump unexpectedly
Look for the billing unit: an additional location, extra responses, processing charges, seats, exports, or an advanced analytics tier. Request a scenario for your expected maximum usage before signing, not only the entry price shown on a landing page.
Bottom line: match the tool to the unanswered question
Choose StoreTurnAI when your constraint is understanding POS and inventory performance across one to ten locations. Choose 1Q when you need paid consumer feedback and geographic targeting that your own records cannot provide. Choose Savoir Analytics when a Square or Shopify retailer mainly wants inexpensive weekly PDF or Excel reporting. Choose Checkbox when surveys, qualitative work, sentiment, and competitive analysis must live in a broader research workflow. Treat NIQ’s combined pricing, promotion, and shopper analytics as a benchmark for capabilities rather than an assumption about small-business pricing. Recheck prices, integrations, panel details, trial terms, and usage limits immediately before purchase because the cited vendor pages are current 2026 snapshots, not permanent contracts.
