On a retail job application, give your real schedule, describe relevant experience accurately—even if it is not retail work—and list references only as the form requests. Retailers set their own requirements; a Texas Workforce Commission guide describes questions employers may ask, but it is not a nationwide standard.
What should I put for availability on a job application?
Check the job posting, then state the days and times you can reliably work. Include your earliest start, latest end, and any fixed limits. If you have some flexibility, describe it within those limits rather than claiming open availability you cannot provide.
For example, adapt this wording to your actual schedule: “Available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after 3 p.m.; available all day Saturday and Sunday. I can discuss additional shifts with advance notice.” The Texas Workforce Commission identifies availability and restrictions on schedules, work type, and location as possible application questions; each employer’s form may differ. What do I write for experience if I have no retail experience?
Say plainly that you have not worked in retail, then give specific examples of skills that relate to the job. Relevant experience can come from other employment, school activities, caregiving, or volunteering. Explain what you actually did and what skill it demonstrates; do not invent duties, results, or numbers.

If you have retail experience
Describe duties you really performed, such as customer service, stocking, cash handling, merchandising, or order fulfillment. Choose details that match the posting.
If your experience is from another setting
Connect a concrete task to a relevant skill. For example, describe helping customers in food service, organizing supplies for a school activity, or coordinating responsibilities as a volunteer. These are examples of how to present your background, not a guaranteed hiring formula. Federal applicant guidance notes that employers may ask about work history; the Texas application guide also describes work-history questions. Who can I use as a reference?
Choose someone who knows your work, abilities, education, or skills and can speak about them accurately. A former supervisor, colleague, teacher, coach, or volunteer coordinator may be appropriate if that person knows your work and agrees to be contacted. Follow the application’s rules about acceptable reference types and the contact details it requests; do not assume every employer accepts every category.

Ask first, explain the role, and share a recent résumé and the job announcement so your reference understands the opportunity. The Department of Labor’s employment workshop guide recommends providing those materials. U.S. Department of Labor: Employment Workshop Participant Guide 6.0

Do I need references for a retail job?
Use the specific application as your authority. Some forms request references; others may not. The available guidance does not establish a universal number of references or a standard format for all retail applications, so provide only what the employer asks for.
Can an employer check my work history?
Employers may ask applicants about background information, including employment history, subject to federal nondiscrimination rules and protections for medical and genetic information. If a company that compiles background information provides a report, federal law generally requires the employer to give you a written disclosure and obtain your written permission before obtaining it. You can decline permission, but the employer may decide not to proceed with your application. If an employer may reject you based on information in a background report, federal procedures generally require it to take additional steps, including giving you a copy of the report and a notice of your rights before the decision, followed by notice after the decision. Details and other applicable rules can depend on the circumstances; state or local laws may provide additional protections. For current local requirements, consult official guidance for your jurisdiction or seek qualified legal advice. How to read an unfamiliar application
Use the actual posting and form—not assumptions about retail jobs generally—to check what this employer asks for. Pay attention to:
Quick Recap
- Which days and time windows the role requires or asks you to identify.
- Whether the form asks for a fixed schedule or allows you to describe shift flexibility.
- Whether the posting states an experience requirement.
- What type of references and contact information the form requests.
- Whether a separate background-report disclosure and authorization appears.
