Retail ERP and POS do different jobs: ERP coordinates business processes such as finance, procurement, and merchandising, while POS runs store transactions and connects them to product data, inventory, and store hardware. Their value depends on whether they share timely, usable information without adding unnecessary system complexity. For retailers modernizing their architecture, that means evaluating process fit and integration alongside an increasingly important requirement: whether scanners and POS software can handle the intended 2D barcode use cases.
How ERP and POS work together in retail
ERP coordinates business processes
A retail ERP system can bring business functions such as finance, procurement, and merchandising into a shared operational environment. As one vendor example, SAP described its January 2025 retail cloud offering as integrating those functions with unified operational data. SAP also named connections across SAP Commerce Cloud, SAP Service Cloud, SAP Emarsys, and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. These are SAP’s descriptions of its own offering, not an independent assessment of product performance. SAP’s announcement provides the product context.
POS runs store transactions and connects store operations
A point-of-sale system processes transactions and may support inventory management, product data, and reporting. It also acts as a host for peripherals such as barcode scanners, scales, receipt printers, and cash drawers. Depending on the setup, POS can connect store activity with online channels. GS1’s Retail POS 2D Barcodes Implementation Guideline, release 1.1, describes these POS responsibilities and hardware connections.

The handoff is the point to examine
As a simple operating model, a store transaction and its inventory effect are captured at POS; relevant information is then made available to business systems; and teams use current information to support replenishment, merchandising, finance, or customer-facing decisions. The exact data flow varies by architecture. The practical question is whether the systems exchange the information each team needs, at a useful time, and in a format the receiving system can use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to evaluate when choosing or modernizing systems
There is no neutral vendor comparison or comparable pricing and implementation evidence in the available sources, so a retailer should assess options against its own operating model rather than infer a universal winner. These criteria help structure discovery and vendor discussions:
- Retail process coverage: Check support for the retailer’s required merchandising, procurement, finance, store operations, and inventory workflows.
- Integration fit: Map connections to current POS, ecommerce, service, loyalty, and operational systems. Establish which connections are standard and which require custom work. SAP’s named integrations illustrate one vendor’s connected-product approach; they do not establish how another retailer’s systems will connect.
- Data availability: Determine whether teams can access current, shared customer and operational information or depend on delayed summaries. The National Retail Federation identifies connecting systems and using current operational information for faster decisions as industry priorities, not guaranteed results. NRF’s April 17, 2026 retail technology perspective also highlights the effort to limit complexity and maintain flexibility.
- Complexity and flexibility: Identify overlapping tools that might be consolidated, and ask how the design can accommodate future changes without repeated rework. NRF summarizes the goal as “improve flexibility while maintaining reliability.”
- Deployment fit: Test fit against retailer size, geography, store count, operating model, and implementation capacity. Request current proposals using comparable scope and assumptions; the sources do not establish a cost or implementation benchmark.
- Hardware and standards support: Confirm compatibility among scanners, scales, printers, payment equipment, and the POS host. For 2D barcode plans, verify the specific formats, data handling, and host-side processing required.
What GS1’s 2027 2D barcode goal means for POS
GS1 describes an industry goal that, by the end of 2027, all retail POS systems should be capable of reading and processing a defined set of GS1-standard 2D barcodes in addition to existing linear barcodes. This is a transition goal, not evidence that every store or system can already do it. GS1’s 2D barcode readiness guidance covers capabilities such as recognizing and decoding compliant retail 2D symbols, transmitting selected data, and supporting retail scanning modes.

Readiness is not established by a scanner label alone. A retailer needs to verify the particular scanner’s capabilities and configuration, the data it passes to the POS host, and whether the host software can process the intended use case. GS1 notes that advanced uses can require POS host software updates or configuration. Basic product identification and more granular data—such as expiry date or weight—can place different demands on the system.
Keep linear barcodes in the transition plan
2D adoption does not mean that linear barcodes have been universally displaced. GS1 continues to identify EAN/UPC as the first symbol choice for trade items scanned at retail POS, while standardized 2D symbols may apply in some cases. GS1’s EAN/UPC guidance explains that selection context.

A practical POS and ERP readiness checklist
- Define the business process: Document which store and back-office workflows need to share information, who uses it, and how current it must be.
- Map the system connections: List existing POS, ERP, ecommerce, service, loyalty, and operational platforms. For each required data flow, establish the source, destination, timing, and whether the connection is standard or custom.
- Choose the barcode use case: State whether the requirement is product identification or handling additional data, such as expiry date or weight. Identify the GS1-standard formats and data the retailer intends to support.
- Validate scanner and host together: Ask the solution provider to confirm scanner decoding, configuration, scanning mode, interface, and the data transmitted to the POS host. Verify that the host can process the data and whether a software update or configuration change is needed.
- Check the full peripheral environment: Confirm compatibility with relevant scales, receipt printers, cash drawers, and payment equipment, as well as the operating conditions in each store.
- Test the end-to-end flow: Verify that the intended barcode data reaches the POS host, is handled as required, and produces the correct downstream inventory or business-system result. Agree on acceptance criteria before rollout.
- Compare deployment proposals consistently: Use the same store scope, integrations, hardware assumptions, migration responsibilities, and support expectations when reviewing proposals. This makes retailer-specific cost and delivery comparisons more meaningful.
A 2D-capable retail scanner is a category to evaluate, not a validated model recommendation. Selection depends on barcode types, scanner mode, interface, store environment, and compatibility with the existing POS host.

These sources describe system functions and industry priorities; they do not establish a particular retailer’s return on investment, sales lift, labor savings, or inventory-accuracy improvement. Nor do they provide comparable vendor pricing or implementation results. Those outcomes depend on the retailer’s requirements, existing architecture, rollout, and measurement approach.
