Retail analytics is the practice of collecting and analyzing data about sales, customers, inventory, supply chains, and markets to guide retail decisions. Retailers use it to understand performance, forecast demand, plan stock and product assortments, evaluate prices and promotions, and improve store and online experiences. It is a business practice—not a single software product—and its tools depend on the decisions a retailer needs to make.
What retail analytics means
Retail analytics turns data generated across a retail business into information that can support action. It can combine point-of-sale transactions, inventory records, customer and loyalty interactions, online activity, supply-chain information, and relevant market signals. The goal is not simply to display data, but to use it to answer questions such as what is selling, why results changed, what demand may look like, and what the retailer should do next.
A practical way to understand the work is to separate it into four analytical modes. This is an explanatory framework, not a formal industry standard:
- Descriptive: What happened? For example, which products or stores had higher or lower sales.
- Diagnostic: Why might it have happened? An analyst might investigate whether a change coincided with a promotion, stock availability, or a shift in customer behavior.
- Predictive: What may happen next? Forecasts can estimate future demand using historical sales and other relevant signals.
- Prescriptive: What action should be considered? Analysis may help evaluate choices such as replenishment, allocation, pricing, or promotion changes.
These modes can overlap in a single workflow. A dashboard may show a sales decline, further analysis may identify a likely cause, and a forecast may inform a response.

What retailers use analytics for
Sales and customer behavior
Retailers analyze sales patterns, shopping behavior, preferences, and customer interactions to understand business performance and customer segments. These insights can inform decisions about products, service, and how to reach customers.
Demand forecasting and inventory
Forecasting estimates likely future demand, helping retailers plan buying, product allocation, and replenishment. Inventory analysis can help identify stock needs and manage the competing risks of holding excess stock and running out of products. Forecasts support decisions; they do not guarantee that demand will match the estimate.

Assortment and merchandising
Product performance and trend analysis can inform which items a retailer offers and how the assortment varies by location or channel. A product that performs well in one context may not be the right choice everywhere, so useful analysis depends on having detail at the level of the decision.

Pricing, promotions, and marketing
Retailers can assess how prices and promotions perform and how customers respond. That information can help evaluate campaign decisions and marketing allocation. Analysis is most useful when the data can distinguish the effect being examined from other factors that may have influenced results.

Barcode scanners and RFID equipment can capture or help identify item-level information, but they are only parts of a data workflow. A USB barcode scanner, for example, may contribute transaction or inventory data; it does not analyze that data or produce a reliable business recommendation on its own. Google’s Retail Insights Framework illustrates data views and dashboards organized around customers, products, nodes, and inventory, with BigQuery as one platform example.

How to choose an analytics approach
Start with the business decision, then assess whether the available data and operating capabilities can support it. A useful evaluation checklist is:
- Decision supported: Is the priority reporting, customer analysis, demand forecasting, pricing, inventory, assortment, or store operations?
- Data coverage and integration: Can the approach connect the required POS, ecommerce, inventory, loyalty, supply-chain, and other systems?
- Detail and freshness: Does it provide useful store-, product-, location-, and time-level detail at a cadence that fits the decision?
- Analytical capability: Does it offer trusted reporting, forecasting, optimization, or experimentation for the intended use?
- Governance and operations: Can the organization manage data quality, access, privacy, security, deployment, and ongoing ownership?
- Implementation burden: What skills, infrastructure, configuration, and change management will be needed to turn outputs into action?
For example, a retailer focused on replenishment should first check whether its sales and stock data are sufficiently integrated and current for the planning cadence it uses. A retailer evaluating customer experience may instead need useful connections between customer interactions, product information, and digital behavior. The same analytics platform is not automatically the right answer for both.
Microsoft describes retail applications including forecasting, demand planning, inventory, assortment, pricing, and store insights in its retail materials. These are examples of use cases, not independent evidence of product performance. The available evidence does not establish a neutral vendor ranking or a quantitative head-to-head comparison, so evaluate products against the checklist and the retailer’s own requirements.

Why retail analytics matters—and what it cannot do alone
Retail analytics can help organizations make decisions using a broader, more connected view of their business than isolated sales or stock reports provide. Its value depends on the quality and relevance of the inputs, the suitability of the analysis, and whether people can act on the output. A forecast based on incomplete data, for example, may be less useful than a simpler report built on reliable records.
Adoption and execution remain challenges. A Mastercard guide published August 7, 2024, and updated October 29, 2025, reports that 75% of retail decision-makers say their organization is struggling to transform at the rate consumer expectations are changing, and that only 14% of retailers feel they can proactively anticipate change. These are figures reported by Mastercard’s guide; its underlying study was not independently reviewed here. See the Mastercard retail analytics guide for its context.
