If your Windows 11 screen went black right after you changed the resolution, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B first to reset the graphics driver. Then try Windows+P, tap P again, and press Enter to cycle display modes. If neither restores the picture, use Windows Recovery Environment to start with low-resolution video, then select the display’s recommended resolution once the desktop is visible.
Try these quick checks first
- Reset the graphics driver: Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. A beep or brief screen flicker can indicate that Windows reset the graphics driver. Wait a moment to see whether the display returns. Microsoft lists this shortcut among its blank-screen troubleshooting steps.
- Cycle the display output: Press Windows+P, tap P again, and press Enter. Repeat if needed to move through options such as PC screen only, Duplicate, and Extend. This can help if Windows is sending the picture to another display.
- Check an external monitor connection: Make sure the monitor is powered on and the cable is firmly connected. If possible, try another compatible cable or monitor to rule out a connection problem. This check applies to an external display; it does not reset a Windows resolution setting.
These checks do not confirm that the selected resolution caused the black screen. The display mode, a driver or update, a connection issue, or another startup problem may be involved. If the screen remains blank, use Windows Recovery Environment rather than repeatedly changing display settings without a visible picture.
Get to Startup Settings when the screen stays black
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) includes startup options for recovering access to Windows. Use a route that is available on your PC:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If you can still navigate Windows: Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- If Windows will not start normally: Microsoft describes triggering Automatic Repair by interrupting startup twice: turn on the PC, wait for the Windows or manufacturer logo, then hold the power button until it shuts down. Repeat once, then start the PC a third time and choose Advanced options when Automatic Repair appears. This interrupts startup, so use it only when you cannot reach recovery through Windows.
- Other access routes: Some devices have a manufacturer-specific recovery button. A Windows recovery drive or installation media may also provide access to recovery tools.
Device menus and access routes can vary. On an encrypted device, some recovery tools may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance if you need more detail about entering Windows RE.

Start Windows with low-resolution video
- In Windows RE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts to the Startup Settings list, select Enable low-resolution video using the displayed key or number for that option.
- If Windows starts and the picture is visible, change the resolution in Display settings as described below.
Enable low-resolution video uses the current video driver with low resolution and refresh-rate settings; Microsoft describes it as an option that can be used to reset display settings. It is different from Safe Mode, which starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If low-resolution video does not help, return to Startup Settings and choose Safe Mode. Choose Safe Mode with Networking only if you need network access; Microsoft identifies F5 for that option in its blank-screen instructions. See Microsoft’s Startup Settings guide.
Choose the display’s recommended resolution
Once you can see the desktop, open Settings > System > Display, select the affected display, and choose the option marked Recommended under Display resolution. The appropriate value depends on the particular display, so there is no single resolution number that suits every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft advises sticking with the setting marked “Recommended” in its screen resolution and layout guide.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
A resolution below a monitor’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the image appear small, centered, bordered by black, or stretched. If Windows changed the resolution unexpectedly, Microsoft’s guidance suggests checking for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If the black screen began after a graphics-driver update, start Windows in Safe Mode and use Device Manager to roll back the display driver. If the driver change was not recent, or rollback is unavailable, consider whether an appropriate driver update is available instead. The right choice depends on what changed; neither updating nor rolling back is a guaranteed fix.

Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance also treats symptoms as clues rather than proof of a single cause: a blank screen with a cursor, one at sign-in, one following an update, and a blinking cursor can point to different problems. A black screen with an error message or stop code is a separate issue and should be handled using stop-code troubleshooting, not assumed to be a resolution problem.

If the display problem started recently and Windows has a suitable restore point, System Restore is a possible next step. It can be run from Windows or Windows RE and restores system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the selected restore point without affecting personal files. It requires an appropriate restore point and is not the same as resetting the PC. Details are in Microsoft’s System Restore guide.

Leave broader recovery steps, such as uninstalling a recent update, resetting Windows, or reinstalling from recovery media, until display recovery and other less disruptive options have failed. Their availability and effects differ, and some recovery choices can cause data loss. Microsoft’s recovery options guide describes these choices. It also says point-in-time restore is available for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later; that option returns apps, settings, and personal files to a recent automatic snapshot.

Use the symptom to decide what to check next
- You reach sign-in, but the picture disappears afterward: Check the output mode first. If a cursor is visible on a blank screen, a stalled Windows process or driver may also be involved.
- The black screen began after an update: Try Safe Mode, then consider whether the graphics driver should be rolled back or updated.
- You use an external monitor: Check its power, connection, and Windows output mode before changing system recovery settings.
- You see a blinking cursor or an error/stop code: Do not treat that as a confirmed resolution-setting problem; it may need boot-device or stop-code troubleshooting instead.
