Windows 10’s Go back feature can restore the Windows installation that was on your computer immediately before a recent upgrade. It is not a version picker: you cannot use it to select any historical Windows 10 release, and it normally works for only 10 days after the upgrade.

The process keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Before starting, back up important files and make sure you understand which recovery option you actually need.

Choose the right recovery option

Windows has several recovery tools with similar-sounding names but very different results:

Tool What it does When to use it
Go back Returns Windows to the version installed immediately before a recent Windows upgrade. Personal files are kept. A feature upgrade caused problems and the rollback files are still available.
System Restore Restores system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. Personal files are not affected. A driver, application, or system setting caused the problem. It does not revert Windows to an earlier feature-update version.
Reset this PC Reinstalls Windows. Depending on the option chosen, it keeps or removes personal files. Windows is badly damaged and other recovery methods have failed.

This article covers Go back first, then explains what to try if that option is missing or Windows will not start.

Before you restore the previous Windows version

  1. Back up important files. Although Microsoft says Go back keeps personal files, copy critical documents, photos, browser data, and work files to an external drive or cloud storage before proceeding.
  2. Connect the computer to power. The rollback can take time and should not be interrupted by a flat battery.
  3. Record recently installed applications. Apps and drivers installed after the upgrade will be removed. Apps added, removed, or updated after the upgrade may be unavailable or may not work correctly afterward.
  4. Remove accounts added after the upgrade. Microsoft lists newly added user accounts as a condition that can prevent the rollback. Remove those accounts first, after backing up any files stored in them.

How to go back to the previous version of Windows 10

Use these steps while Windows 10 is running:

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Open Update & Security, then select Recovery.
  3. Find the Go back section and select Go back.
  4. Choose a reason for returning to the earlier version, then select Next.
  5. Read the warnings about applications, drivers, and settings. Continue through the prompts.
  6. When Windows presents the option, select Go back to the previous version or the equivalent confirmation button.

The computer will restart several times. Do not turn it off while Windows is restoring the earlier installation. When the process finishes, sign in and check your files, applications, drivers, and hardware.

What the rollback keeps and removes

Usually kept Removed or potentially affected
Personal files Apps installed after the upgrade
Files in your normal user folders Drivers installed after the upgrade
Settings changed after the upgrade
Apps added, removed, or updated after the upgrade may be missing or malfunctioning

Microsoft’s current instructions for going back to the previous Windows version apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. In Windows 10, however, the navigation path is Settings > Update & Security > Recovery; the Windows 11 path shown on Microsoft’s site is different.

Why “Go back” may be missing

The option is not a general Windows-version rollback tool. It depends on the previous installation still being stored on the drive and on the rollback window not having expired.

Check these likely causes:

  • More than 10 days have passed. The period is measured from the date Windows was upgraded, not from the date you first noticed a problem. Older guides that say the feature works for 30 days are out of date for Microsoft’s current guidance.
  • The rollback files were deleted. The contents of both C:Windows.old and C:$windows.~bt must still be present.
  • Disk Cleanup removed the old installation. Removing “Previous Windows installation(s)” frees disk space but also removes the files required for Go back.
  • The upgrade used a USB drive. If a USB drive was used for the upgrade, Microsoft says the same USB drive is required to go back.
  • A user account was added after the upgrade. Remove the account before trying again, while preserving its data.

Do not delete or rename Windows.old or $Windows.~BT in an attempt to fix the missing option. Those folders are part of what makes the rollback possible.

If Windows 10 will not start

When Windows cannot boot normally, you can enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). WinRE does not provide Go back as a general-purpose recovery tool, but it includes alternatives such as System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Startup Repair, System Image Recovery, and Command Prompt.

Enter WinRE from Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Alternatively, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.

After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options, then choose the recovery tool that matches the problem.

Force WinRE when the PC cannot reach the sign-in screen

  1. Turn on the computer and wait until the Windows logo or the manufacturer logo appears.
  2. Hold the power button until the computer shuts down.
  3. Repeat the interruption once more.
  4. Start the computer a third time. Windows should display Automatic Repair.
  5. Select Advanced options.

This method intentionally interrupts startup, so use it only when normal startup is unavailable.

Use Windows installation media

If you have Windows installation media, boot the computer from it. Select the language and other preferences, choose Next, then select Repair my PC and select Next to enter WinRE.

Use System Restore for a driver or software problem

System Restore is useful when the issue was caused by a recent driver, application, registry change, or system setting. It does not restore the previous Windows feature update.

From a running Windows 10 installation

  1. Open Control Panel > Recovery.
  2. Select Open System Restore.
  3. In the System Restore window, select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point. If necessary, select Show more restore points.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs to see which applications and drivers may be changed.
  6. Select Next > Finish and confirm the operation.

Windows restarts automatically while applying the restore point. System Restore does not normally delete personal files, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point.

From WinRE

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. If the device is encrypted, Windows may require the BitLocker recovery key before System Restore can proceed.

What about Reset this PC?

Reset this PC is a more destructive recovery option. It reinstalls Windows and lets you choose whether to keep or remove personal files. It is not the normal way to return to the Windows version that was installed before a feature upgrade.

Use Reset only after checking whether Go back, System Restore, Startup Repair, uninstalling a recent update, or a system image can solve the problem. Confirm that you have backups and installation files or license information for applications you will need to reinstall.

Windows 10 support ended in 2025

Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or ordinary security fixes for Windows 10. Restoring an earlier Windows 10 version therefore does not return the computer to a fully supported operating system.

If the hardware supports it, moving to a supported Windows release is generally safer than remaining on an older Windows 10 installation. Check application compatibility, hardware requirements, backup status, and your organization’s policies before upgrading.

Insider Preview warning

If the computer is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, going back to an earlier Insider build does not remove it from the program. Microsoft says the next available preview build can still be installed. Leave the Insider Program separately if you want to stop receiving preview builds.

FAQ

Can I restore Windows 10 to any previous version?

No. Go back normally returns Windows to the version installed immediately before the most recent upgrade. It is not a menu for choosing any historical Windows 10 release.

How long do I have to roll back Windows 10?

Microsoft currently says the rollback window is 10 days in most cases. The countdown starts when Windows is upgraded, not when you notice a problem.

Will going back to the previous Windows version delete my files?

Microsoft says Go back keeps personal files. Nevertheless, back up important data first because recovery operations can fail or expose unrelated storage problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Go back not shown in Windows 10 Recovery settings?

The 10-day window may have expired, or Windows may no longer have the required Windows.old and $Windows.~BT folders. A USB-based upgrade also requires the same USB drive for rollback, and accounts added after the upgrade may need to be removed.

Does System Restore roll Windows 10 back to the previous feature update?

No. System Restore uses restore points to revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Use Go back for the previous Windows installation, when that option is still available.

What should I do if Windows will not boot?

Enter Windows Recovery Environment using Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, Shift + Power > Restart, repeated failed starts, or Windows installation media. Then try System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Startup Repair, or another appropriate WinRE tool.

The Bottom Line

For a recent Windows 10 upgrade, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back. It normally works only within 10 days, requires the old-installation files, keeps personal files, and removes post-upgrade apps, drivers, and settings changes. If Go back is unavailable, System Restore can undo a recent software or driver change, while Reset this PC reinstalls Windows rather than restoring the previous Windows version.
