To restore a Google Account backup to a Samsung Galaxy, use the phone’s initial Setup Wizard on a new device or after a factory reset. At Copy apps & data, continue without the old device, sign in to the Google Account that holds the backup, select the available device backup and the data categories offered, then follow the prompts. Samsung’s documented Google restore is not launched from Settings after setup is complete.
Before you restore: confirm the backup and account
If the old Galaxy still works, check that it is backed up to the Google Account you plan to use on the new or reset phone. Samsung’s Singapore guide lists this path: Settings → Accounts and backup → Google Drive → Back up data → Back up now. Depending on the Galaxy model and software, the path may instead begin Settings → Google → Backup. Labels can vary by region and Android version. Automatic backup is not necessarily immediate. Samsung Singapore says it occurs over Wi-Fi while the phone is charging and has been idle for at least two hours. Backups use Google Account storage, so available space can affect whether a backup completes. Samsung also says Google Drive backup data other than items backed up to Google Photos is deleted after 57 consecutive days of device inactivity. Check that the backup is still present before resetting the old phone.
How to restore your Samsung phone from a Google backup
- Start the Setup Wizard. On a new Galaxy, continue through its initial setup. If the phone has already been configured, Samsung’s documented Google restore route requires setup to begin again after a factory reset.
- Open the copy screen. At Copy apps & data, tap Next, then choose the option to continue without the old phone. Depending on software and region, it may read Can’t use other device? or Can’t use old device.
- Sign in to Google. Use the same Google Account that was used to create the old phone’s backup. If you sign in to a different account, its backups will not appear.
- Select the backup and categories. Choose the old device or the most recent available backup, review the categories offered, and tap Restore.
- Finish setup and let content download. Follow the remaining Google and Samsung prompts. Apps and other content may continue downloading after setup; Samsung says transfer time depends on the amount of data.
- Check the important items. Confirm contacts, messages, settings and photos in the relevant apps or Google services. The backup inventory and restore choices show what is available for that account.
Samsung’s US instructions describe the Google restore as a Setup Wizard action, not a setting that can be started after the phone is configured. If you are considering a reset to reach setup, first protect any data currently on that phone: a factory reset erases its contents. See Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore instructions.

What may come back—and what may not
Depending on the device and backup, Samsung lists apps, photos and videos, SMS/MMS, call history, device settings and Google Account data as possible categories. Its Canada guide also names contacts and app data. These are categories that may be offered, not a promise that every app’s private data or every file stored only on the old phone will be restored.
A device backup is not necessarily a complete photo archive. Check the Google Photos library separately, and inspect the backup inventory during setup to see which photo and video items are available. Samsung’s retention note distinguishes items backed up to Google Photos from other Google Drive backup data.

Compatibility matters: Samsung warns that a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version. Restore labels, options and supported categories can also differ by Galaxy model, Android version and region.
Why the old backup may not appear
- Wrong Google Account: Check the account address carefully; the backup is tied to the account used on the old device.
- No completed or recent backup: Check the old phone’s backup status if it is available. Automatic backup depends on the documented Wi-Fi, charging and idle conditions.
- Backup is no longer retained: Samsung Singapore says Google Drive backup data other than Google Photos items is deleted after 57 consecutive days of device inactivity.
- Google Account storage was full: Check available account storage and whether the old phone completed a backup.
- Android versions are incompatible: A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older one, according to Samsung.
If the phone is already set up, choose the right recovery route
Samsung’s documentation does not describe an in-place way to apply a Google device backup from Settings once the Galaxy has completed setup. Resetting to use the Setup Wizard is a consequential choice because it erases current phone contents, so save anything you need before proceeding.

Samsung Cloud backup
If the backup was made to a Samsung Account rather than Google, Samsung lists a separate route: Settings → Samsung Account name → Samsung Cloud → Restore data. This restores a Samsung Cloud backup, not a Google Account backup. See Samsung’s storage and backup options.
Smart Switch backup on a computer or external storage
If you created a local Smart Switch backup, Samsung documents restoring it by connecting the Galaxy to a Windows PC or Mac with a compatible USB cable, opening Smart Switch on the computer, choosing Restore and selecting the backup and categories. Supported external storage may also be an option depending on the model. This is separate from restoring a Google Account backup.

Transfer directly from a working old phone
Samsung Smart Switch can also transfer data directly from another phone. Wireless or wired methods are available, while adapter and charger requirements depend on the devices and the amount of data. This is a device-to-device transfer, not a restore from Google’s cloud backup.
