If your earbuds sound muffled or quieter than usual, gently cleaning their removable tips and speaker mesh may help when wax or debris is the cause. You may not need to buy anything: some manufacturer guidance recommends a clean, soft brush or cotton swab. Check the instructions for your exact model first, because cleaning methods differ and liquid or tools pushed into openings can cause damage.
Why earbud sound can become muffled
Earwax, dust, and other debris can accumulate on earbud mesh and interfere with sound. Samsung says buildup can make audio sound muffled, while TCL notes that dirt or earwax may affect sound volume and quality. Cleaning is worth trying when you can see buildup, but it is not a guaranteed fix—and not every sound problem comes from a dirty mesh.
There is no quantified improvement rate in the cited manufacturer guidance, so treat cleaning as a low-cost troubleshooting step, not a promise that sound will return to normal.

How to clean earbuds safely
- Check the instructions for your exact model. Find the manufacturer’s manual or support page before removing a tip or using a cleaning tool. Guidance varies: for example, TCL says not to use liquids or cleaning products on the earbuds, while Bose says to keep openings dry and not insert cleaning tools into the nozzle.
- Remove a detachable tip only if the instructions allow it. Take it off gently so you do not pull or damage the earbud. If the tip resists, do not force it.
- Brush loose debris gently. If the model’s instructions permit, use a clean, soft, dry brush or a cotton swab to lift debris from the mesh. Do not push the swab or brush into an opening. Samsung warns against metal or wire brushes, which can damage the mesh or internal components.
- Clean the removed tip only as directed. Advice differs by product: TCL permits wiping removed tips with a wet wipe and reinstalling them once dry; Bose says detached tips and stability bands may be washed with water and a small amount of detergent, then dried completely. These directions are not interchangeable—use only the method specified for your model.
- Let parts dry fully before reassembly or charging. Keep liquid away from earbud openings, charging ports, and contacts unless the manufacturer explicitly gives different instructions for a removable part. TCL warns against charging earbuds when wet.
For a gentle cleaning tool, a soft-bristled electronics brush is an optional category to look for, not a required purchase. A cotton swab may already be available at home. The manufacturer guidance supports these tool types; it does not establish that a special-purpose kit is necessary or that any particular product is universally safe.

If cleaning does not improve the sound
Check other common causes before trying more forceful cleaning. Samsung identifies fit, software, battery, volume, and left/right balance as possible factors in poor audio.
- Fit and orientation: Make sure each earbud is seated and oriented as intended. If in-ear tips feel loose or squeeze your ear canal, trying another supplied size may help. Tip shape, fit, and compatibility depend on the model; use its sizing guidance.
- Battery: Check that the earbuds have sufficient charge.
- Volume and balance: Check both the connected device’s volume and any earbud volume controls, then check the left/right balance setting on the device.
- Software: Check for relevant software updates using the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the sound remains poor, use the manufacturer’s support route for your model. Avoid poking the mesh or attempting invasive cleaning: debris is only one possible cause, and aggressive handling can damage delicate parts.
