A greyed-out Bluetooth control does not by itself prove the computer’s Bluetooth hardware has failed. Windows may be dealing with a detection error, a missing or incompatible driver, a setting, or a recent update. Start with a full shutdown and power-on, then check whether Device Manager can see the adapter and update or reinstall its driver as needed. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels can vary by version.
First, check what is actually missing
“Bluetooth is greyed out” can mean the Bluetooth toggle is unavailable in Settings or Quick Settings, or that an adapter appears in Device Manager but is disabled or not working. These are related symptoms, but they do not establish the same cause. Microsoft says a missing or grayed-out control can occur when Bluetooth hardware encounters an error; outdated or incompatible drivers, settings, stopped system services, hardware problems, and recent Windows updates can also be involved. Microsoft’s missing-Bluetooth guidance describes these possibilities.
Before troubleshooting a built-in adapter, check your PC’s specifications or manufacturer support page for the exact model. Some computers do not include Bluetooth hardware, and a missing setting can also mean the driver is not installed. Do not assume the hardware is broken—or buy an adapter—until you have checked capability.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try a full shutdown before changing drivers
For a missing Bluetooth control, Microsoft recommends a full shutdown rather than a standard Restart. This can clear a temporary detection problem.

Check Bluetooth settings and Device Manager
Confirm Airplane mode is off
On Windows 10, Microsoft’s instructions include checking that Airplane mode is off. On Windows 11, check the network and device controls in Quick Settings, then open Settings > Bluetooth & devices if that page is available. If the Bluetooth control is absent, proceed to Device Manager rather than treating the missing toggle as proof of hardware failure.

Find the exact PC model on the manufacturer’s official support site and check its Bluetooth downloads and instructions. Use a driver intended for that model and Windows version; avoid installing a driver based only on a similar-looking device name.
