Restless Horizons is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java 1.20.1. Install the client from its CurseForge project, launch once with the supplied profile, and use the matching server-pack release when hosting. For a server, treat 6 GB RAM as a practical starting floor, then move to 8 GB or more as player count, exploration and world-generation load increase.

What Restless Horizons is

Restless Horizons is an ElocinDev adventure and RPG pack built for players who want modern Minecraft content with the severe survival pressure associated with RLCraft. CurseForge currently categorizes it as adventure/RPG, expert, exploration, hardcore and RLCraft-inspired. Release 3.1hfhf was uploaded on October 9, 2026, and the project page reports 173,594 total downloads at that time.

The creator describes the design goal as bringing that style of difficulty beyond the older 1.12.2 era: “RLCraft defined a generation of suffering, but it’s stuck in 1.12.2.” Restless Horizons applies the idea to Minecraft 1.20.1 while adding quests, integrations and custom content.

Major systems you will encounter

  • Locational health rather than a single undifferentiated health bar.
  • Temperature and thirst that make climate, shelter and supplies important.
  • Character leveling and progression gates.
  • Event moons and ultra blights that can change the threat level of a night.
  • Contested villages and custom Lycanites-like creatures.
  • Revamped battle towers, baubles and reworked dimensions.
  • Custom bosses and heavily changed recipes.

Those systems mean a normal vanilla opening—punching trees, rushing a cave and ignoring weather—is unreliable. Read quests, secure water and shelter early, and expect progression to be slower than in an ordinary 1.20.1 world.

Versions and requirements

Component Required or recommended value Qualification
Minecraft edition Java Edition for PC The pack is not a Bedrock profile.
Minecraft version 1.20.1 Client and server must use the same version.
Mod loader Forge Use the Forge profile selected by the project listing.
Pack release Match the server’s exact release; current project release is 3.1hfhf Pack files can change after the date noted above.
Client memory Allocate enough memory for the launcher profile and your other enabled options The available material does not publish a universal client value; increase it if the game closes during loading.
Server memory At least 6 GB as a provider-stated baseline; 8 GB is a sensible starting plan for a small shared server Actual need depends on players, exploration, pregeneration, view distance and extra mods.

The searched project excerpts do not expose the exact Forge build, Java runtime or dedicated-server archive filename for release 3.1hfhf. Confirm all three on the current CurseForge files page or with the pack author immediately before deployment.

Install Restless Horizons on a client

  1. Install Minecraft Java Edition for PC. Sign in to the launcher account that owns Java Edition and start the vanilla launcher once if this is a new installation.
  2. Install a launcher that can import CurseForge modpacks. The standard route is CurseForge; GDLauncher also points users to the CurseForge project.
  3. Create or import the profile. Search for “Restless Horizons,” select the project created by ElocinDev, and choose the current release you intend to play.
  4. Check the profile details before installing. It should show Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Do not substitute a Fabric profile or a different Minecraft version.
  5. Install and launch once without additions. The first run lets Forge create its libraries and configuration files. Wait for the title screen, then close the game normally.
  6. Only after a clean launch, add optional client features. Test shaders, minimaps or other client-only additions one at a time. A crash after adding an extra is easier to diagnose when the unmodified profile is known to work.

What a successful first launch looks like

  • The launcher downloads the Forge libraries and the pack’s mods without a dependency error.
  • The main menu identifies a Forge installation and does not request a different loader.
  • A new test world reaches gameplay instead of stopping during registry or resource loading.
  • The quest and configuration systems appear in-game.

If the launcher asks you to update individual mods, stop and compare the requested change with the server release. Updating one component independently can create a client/server mismatch.

Set up a managed Restless Horizons server

A managed host is the shortest route when you want friends to connect without maintaining an operating system, Java installation, firewall and backups yourself. The host’s workflow should let you select the Restless Horizons project, choose the exact server-pack file, pick a region and select a plan. CurseForge’s documented example tiers are 4 GB for 1–5 players, 8 GB for 6–15 players and 12 GB for 16–25 players; an expert pack can require more than those examples.

  1. Find the pack’s server files. On the current project files page, identify the server-pack archive that corresponds exactly to your client release. Do not assume the newest client file and newest server file are interchangeable.
  2. Choose the matching loader and version. Set Minecraft to 1.20.1 and Forge, then select the identified server archive rather than a generic Forge installation.
  3. Select a region near most players. Physical distance affects latency. If players are split across continents, choose the region that gives the group the best overall compromise.
  4. Choose memory and CPU capacity. Use 8 GB as a practical small-group starting point, or the next larger tier if you expect fast exploration, pregeneration or many simultaneous players.
  5. Enable backups and test restoration. A backup that has never been restored is not a verified recovery plan. Take a backup before each pack update and before large world or configuration changes.
  6. Start the server with no extra mods. Join with a clean client profile first. Add optional client-only features only after the base connection works.

Interpreting provider-specific memory claims

One provider listing advertises one-click Restless Horizons installation, Forge 1.20.1, NVMe storage and DDoS protection. It says its startup configuration assigns 4.6 GB to Java and requires at least 6 GB to run. That is a provider estimate, not a universal specification for every host or world. Treat 6 GB as a floor, not a target for a busy server; move upward when players generate new terrain simultaneously or the server begins reporting tick delays and out-of-memory errors.

Self-host the server

Self-hosting gives you full control over files and settings but makes you responsible for Java, network access, backups, updates and recovery. Use the pack’s server files when the current files page provides them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the exact server pack. Match the archive to the client release you installed. Keep the original archive so you can rebuild the server if a configuration becomes corrupted.
  2. Extract it into a new server directory. Do not mix files from an older Restless Horizons release or another Forge pack.
  3. Verify the runtime details. Check the current files page or author documentation for the required Java runtime and exact Forge build; those identifiers are not established in the available release excerpt.
  4. Run the initial server start. Forge will generate files and normally stop for the Minecraft EULA. Open eula.txt, read the license and set eula=true only if you accept it.
  5. Set memory in user_jvm_args.txt. Forge’s FAQ identifies this file as the place to configure server JVM memory. An illustrative small-server setting is -Xms6G and -Xmx6G; raise the maximum when your player count or world-generation load requires it, and leave operating-system memory available.
  6. Start again and watch the console. Wait until Forge reports that the server is ready before connecting. Record the first clean startup log for comparison if a later update fails.
  7. Test a fresh world. Join locally, travel far enough to generate new terrain, open containers and trigger the pack’s progression systems. A server that only reaches the spawn area has not been fully tested.
  8. Open network access carefully. Forward the server port on your router or use a private network method, restrict administrative access, and never publish operator credentials.

How much RAM does a Restless Horizons server need?

Situation Starting allocation Why it may change
One to a few players, limited exploration 6 GB minimum baseline The provider estimate says its 4.6 GB Java allocation needs at least 6 GB total.
Small group with normal exploration 8 GB Gives more headroom for chunk generation and the pack’s many systems.
Six to fifteen players 8 GB example tier CurseForge’s hosting examples place this range at 8 GB, but expert packs may need more.
Sixteen to twenty-five players 12 GB example tier CurseForge lists 12 GB for this range; pregeneration and high view distance can push requirements higher.
Pregenerated or heavily explored world More than the baseline Loaded chunks, entities and simultaneous terrain generation increase pressure even when the player count is unchanged.

RAM alone does not determine performance. CPU speed, storage latency, Java garbage-collection behavior, entity counts, simulation distance and network latency also matter. If the server has free memory but still produces long tick times, adding RAM may not solve the bottleneck.

Connect friends and keep everyone synchronized

  1. Give every player the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile and the same Restless Horizons release.
  2. Have each player launch the unmodified pack once before attempting multiplayer.
  3. Provide the server address and port only after the server console reports readiness.
  4. Ask players to remove optional client additions when diagnosing a failed connection. Client-only graphics or utility mods can obscure a genuine pack mismatch.
  5. Keep a written record of the server release, Forge build, Java runtime and any configuration changes.

A player who can reach the server list but is kicked during login usually has a version, loader or mod-file mismatch. A player who cannot see the server at all usually has an address, port, firewall or hosting-state problem instead.

Updating without breaking the world

  1. Read the release notes and identify whether the update changes recipes, dimensions, progression or world generation.
  2. Back up the complete world and server configuration before replacing files.
  3. Update the server and every client to the same release; never update only one side.
  4. Start the updated server with no players and inspect the log for missing dependencies, registry errors or data-fix warnings.
  5. Join with an administrator account, check spawn, quests, dimensions and storage, then invite the rest of the group.
  6. If the update corrupts startup or gameplay, stop the server and restore the backup rather than repeatedly changing files in the live world.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Action
Launcher reports missing mods or incompatible versions Client and server releases differ, or a mod was updated independently Reinstall the exact client profile and deploy the exact matching server archive.
Server stops during startup Wrong Forge build, Java runtime, damaged archive or optional client mod copied to the server Compare the current files page identifiers, restore a clean server-pack extraction and remove client-only additions.
Out-of-memory crash Allocation is below the pack’s load, especially during exploration Start at the 6 GB baseline, move to 8 GB or higher, and reduce view or simulation distance while testing.
Severe lag while players travel New-chunk generation, insufficient CPU or storage throughput Lower view distance, avoid simultaneous long-distance travel, consider pregeneration and choose faster storage or a stronger plan.
Players cannot connect Wrong address or port, firewall/router block, or server not ready Confirm the server is running, verify the address and port, then check firewall and port-forwarding rules.
Only one player is kicked during login That player’s profile differs from the server Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, pack release and mod files; remove optional additions and retry.

If a clean reinstall still fails, capture the complete client and server logs and compare the exact Forge build, Java runtime and server archive version with the current CurseForge files page. Those details are more useful than a screenshot of the crash screen.

  • Exact pack support: the host should accept the current Restless Horizons server file, not merely offer generic Forge.
  • Version control: you need control over Minecraft 1.20.1, the Forge build and Java runtime.
  • CPU and storage: fast single-thread performance and NVMe-class storage help with mod loading and new-chunk generation.
  • Region: select a location close to most players.
  • Backups and restoration: verify retention, manual backup controls and whether restoring a world is self-service.
  • Updates: check whether you can upload a specific server archive and roll back after a failed update.
  • Protection and support: DDoS mitigation and staff familiar with Forge reduce downtime, but neither replaces your own backups.
  • Total monthly cost: include extra RAM, backup storage, dedicated IPs and overage charges, not just the advertised entry price.

Practical first-session plan
